Comparing the effects of low and high load resistance exercise to failure on adaptive responses to resistance exercise in young women
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of 6 weeks of resistance training to volitional failure at low (30% 1 repetition maximum (RM)) or high (80%1RM) loads on gains in muscle size and strength in young women. Thirteen women (age: 29.7 ± 4.7years; height 166.7 ± 6.4cm; weight 64.2 ± 12.2kg) completed 2 training sessions per week for 6 weeks and muscle strength (1RM), muscle thickness (ultrasound) were measured before and after training. Training comprised 1 set to volitional failure of unilateral leg extensions and bicep curls with each limb randomly assigned to train at either 80% 1RM or 30% 1RM. Increases in muscle thickness [arms: 6.81 ± 3.15% (30% 1RM), 5.90 ± 3.13% (80% 1RM) and legs: 9.37 ± 5.61% (30% 1RM), 9.13 ± 7.9% (80% 1RM)] and strength [arms: 15.4 ± 12.2% (30% 1RM), 18.26 ± 12.2% (80% 1RM) and legs: 25.30 ± 18.4 (30% 1RM), 27.20 ± 14.5 (80% 1RM)] were not different between loads. Survival of Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), Poliovirus 1, and F-Specific Coliphages in Disposable Diapers and Landfill Leachates
Fecally soiled disposable diapers are often placed in solid waste landfills for disposal purposes. However, the public health impact that these disposals methods have on humans that come in contact with fecally soiled disposable diapers or on the environment is not fully known. Fecally soiled disposable diapers and leachates were seeded with hepatitis A virus (HAV), poliovirus 1 and F-specific (F+) coliphages and incubated aerobically and/or anaerobically at 5, 25 and 40 degrees Celsius. Samples were taken at specific intervals over a 90-day period and were assayed for surviving viruses. In some cases, viruses survived >90 days (the duration of the experiment) in fecal suspensions and solid waste landfill leachates, especially at low temperatures. In both fecally soiled diapers and leachates all viruses survived longer at lower temperatures, with 1 log[10] inactivation in 30 days at 5° Celsius under all conditions. At 40° celsius, viruses were reduced to nondetectable levels (>4 log[10] reduction) in 10-30 days in diapers and in as little as 3 days in leachates. In some cases, viruses were inactivated more rapidly under anaerobic conditions rather than aerobic conditions. Also, the relative survival of individual viruses within leachate samples was not consistent. HAV had the greatest survival rate in leachate 1 at 5 and 25°C and in leachate 2 at 25°C. Poliovirus survived the best in the other leachate conditions: 40°C in both leachate 1 and 2 and at 5°C in leachate 2. Although virus survival in leachates did not display any general trend according to virus type, comparisons of virus survival in fecal suspensions versus sanitary landfill leachates indicates that viruses survive longer in fecal suspensions by as much as 7-fold. Under most conditions, persistence of F-specific coliphages, HAV and poliovirus was similar, thus suggesting that these phages may be useful enteric virus indicators.Master of Science in Public Healt
Estimated vitamin D synthesis and dietary vitamin D intake among Asians in two distinct geographical locations (Kuala Lumpur, 3°N versus Aberdeen, 57°N) and climates
Objective:
To compare the contributions of UVB exposure and diet to total vitamin D among Asians living in Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Aberdeen (AB).
Design:
Longitudinal study.
Setting:
UVB exposure (using polysulfone film badges) and skin colour and dietary vitamin D intake (by web-based questionnaire) were measured at each season in AB and during south-west (SWM) and north-east monsoons (NEM) in KL.
Subjects:
One hundred and fifteen Asians in KL and eighty-five Asians in AB aged 20–50 years.
Results:
Median summer UVB exposure of Asians in AB (0·25 SED/d) was higher than UVB exposure for the KL participants (SWM=0·20 SED/d, P=0·02; NEM= 0·14 SED/d, P<0·01). UVB exposure was the major source of vitamin D in KL year-round (60%) but only during summer in AB (59%). Median dietary vitamin D intake was higher in AB (3·50 µg/d (140 IU/d)), year-round, than in KL (SWM=2·05 µg/d (82 IU/d); NEM=1·83 µg/d (73 IU/d), P<0·01). Median total vitamin D (UVB plus diet) was higher in AB only during summer (8·45 µg/d (338 IU/d)) compared with KL (SWM=6·03 µg/d (241 IU/d), P=0·04; NEM=5·35 µg/d (214 IU/d), P<0·01), with a comparable intake across the full year (AB=5·75 µg/d (230 IU/d); KL=6·15 µg/d (246 IU/d), P=0·78).
Conclusions:
UVB exposure among Asians in their home country is low. For Asians residing at the northerly latitude of Scotland, acquiring vitamin D needs from UVB exposure alone (except in summer) may be challenging due to low ambient UVB in AB (available only from April to October)
Effect of membrane character and solution chemistry on microfiltration performance
To help understand and predict the role of natural organic matter (NOM) in the fouling of low-pressure membranes, experiments were carried out with an apparatus that incorporates automatic backwashing and long filtration runs. Three hollow fibre membranes of varying character were included in the study, and the filtration of two different surface waters was compared. The hydrophilic membrane had greater flux recovery after backwashing than the hydrophobic membranes, but the efficiency of backwashing decreased at extended filtration times. NOM concentration of these waters (7.9 and 9.1 mg/L) had little effect on the flux of the membranes at extended filtration times, as backwashing of the membrane restored the flux to similar values regardless of the NOM concentration. The solution pH also had little effect at extended filtration times. The backwashing efficiency of the hydrophilic membrane was dramatically different for the two waters, and the presence of colloid NOM alone could not explain these differences. It is proposed that colloidal NOM forms a filter cake on the surface of the membranes and that small molecular weight organics that have an adsorption peak at 220 nm but not 254 nm were responsible for “gluing” the colloids to the membrane surface. Alum coagulation improved membrane performance in all instances, and this was suggested to be because coagulation reduced the concentration of “glue” that holds the organic colloids to the membrane surface

We present a novel method for validating the relative power value (MPI) of the Spatial and Spectral (S2) imaging technique. By applying corrections for spectral leakage and sampling errors we found the MPI determinations to be accurate within 1dB
Pervasive and standalone computing: The perceptual effects of variable multimedia quality.
The introduction of multimedia on pervasive and mobile communication devices raises a number of perceptual quality issues, however, limited work has been done examining the 3-way interaction between use of equipment, quality of perception and quality of service. Our work measures levels of informational transfer (objective) and user satisfaction (subjective)when users are presented with multimedia video clips at three different frame rates, using four different display devices, simulating variation in participant mobility. Our results will show that variation in frame-rate does not impact a user’s level of information assimilation, however, does impact a users’ perception of multimedia video ‘quality’. Additionally, increased visual immersion can be used to increase transfer of video information, but can negatively affect the users’ perception of ‘quality’. Finally, we illustrate the significant affect of clip-content on the transfer of video, audio and textual information, placing into doubt the use of purely objective quality definitions when considering multimedia

The association between driving time and unhealthy lifestyles: a cross-sectional, general population study of 386 493 UK Biobank participants
Background:
Driving is a common type of sedentary behaviour; an independent risk factor for poor health. The study explores whether driving is also associated with other unhealthy lifestyle factors.
Methods:
In a cross-sectional study of UK Biobank participants, driving time was treated as an ordinal variable and other lifestyle factors dichotomized into low/high risk based on guidelines. The associations were explored using chi-square tests for trend and binary logistic regression.
Results:
Of the 386 493 participants who drove, 153 717 (39.8%) drove <1 h/day; 140 140 (36.3%) 1 h/day; 60 973 (15.8%) 2 h/day; and 31 663 (8.2%) ≥3 h/day. Following adjustment for potential confounders, driving ≥3 h/day was associated with being overweight/obese (OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.64–1.85), smoking (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.37–1.63), insufficient sleep (1.70, 95% CI: 1.61–1.80), low fruit/vegetable intake (OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.18–1.35) and low physical activity (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.00–1.11), with dose relationships for the first three, but was not associated with higher alcohol consumption (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.87–1.02).
Conclusions:
Sedentary behaviour, such as driving, is known to have an independent association with adverse health outcomes. It may have additional impact mediated through its effect on other aspects of lifestyle. People with long driving times are at higher risk and might benefit from targeted interventions
Neutron scattering and molecular correlations in a supercooled liquid
We show that the intermediate scattering function for neutron
scattering (ns) can be expanded naturely with respect to a set of molecular
correlation functions that give a complete description of the translational and
orientational two-point correlations in the liquid. The general properties of
this expansion are discussed with special focus on the -dependence and hints
for a (partial) determination of the molecular correlation functions from
neutron scattering results are given. The resulting representation of the
static structure factor is studied in detail for a model system using
data from a molecular dynamics simulation of a supercooled liquid of rigid
diatomic molecules. The comparison between the exact result for and
different approximations that result from a truncation of the series
representation demonstrates its good convergence for the given model system. On
the other hand it shows explicitly that the coupling between translational
(TDOF) and orientational degrees of freedom (ODOF) of each molecule and
rotational motion of different molecules can not be neglected in the
supercooled regime.Further we report the existence of a prepeak in the
ns-static structure factor of the examined fragile glassformer, demonstrating
that prepeaks can occur even in the most simple molecular liquids. Besides
examining the dependence of the prepeak on the scattering length and the
temperature we use the expansion of into molecular correlation
functions to point out intermediate range orientational order as its principle

Dental caries and school readiness in 5‐year‐olds: a birth cohort data linkage study
Objective
To describe the association between dental caries and school readiness in 5-year-old children taking part in the Born in Bradford (BiB) birth cohort, UK.
Methods
The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP) assesses the school readiness of young children and is strongly predictive of future academic attainment. Children are recorded as ‘emerging’ (below expected), ‘expected’, or ‘exceeding’ in five key learning areas. The Oral Health Survey of 5-year-olds (OHS5) is undertaken biennially in England, assessing caries experience at a dentine threshold (d3mft). EYFSP and OHS5 were available for a proportion of children participating in BiB. Odds ratios and confidence intervals for caries experience were established, and odds ratios adjusted for significant sociodemographic variables.
Results
EYFSP and OHS5 data were available for 2.5% (n = 346) BiB participants. Nearly half (45.2%) had caries. A measure of socio-economic status, receiving free school meals, was the only demographic variable strongly related to caries experience (OR: 2.8, 95% CI: 1.6–4.9). After adjustment, children ‘emerging’ in EYFSP learning areas had 1.6- to 2.2-fold (95% CI: 1.0–3.8) higher odds of experiencing caries. Children ‘exceeding’ EYFSP learning areas had 2.3- to 4-fold (95% CI: 0.1–0.9) lower odds of caries experience.
Conclusion
This is the first study to explore the association between caries experience and school readiness using a holistic assessment tool. The association was found across different learning areas and was comparable to and independent of socio-economic status. The findings indicate oral health-related absenteeism is not a causative factor. EYFSP shows potential to enhance the targeting of preventive interventions at a child, class or school level
Use of variability in national and regional data to estimate the prevalence of lymphangioleiomyomatosis
Background: Understanding the true prevalence of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is important in estimating disease burden and targeting specific interventions. As with all rare diseases, obtaining reliable epidemiological data is difficult and requires innovative approaches. Aim: To determine the prevalence and incidence of LAM using data from patient organizations in seven countries, and to use the extent to which the prevalence of LAM varies regionally and nationally to determine whether prevalence estimates are related to health-care provision. Methods: Numbers of women with LAM were obtained from patient groups and national databases from seven countries (n = 1001). Prevalence was calculated for regions within countries using female population figures from census data. Incidence estimates were calculated for the USA, UK and Switzerland. Regional variation in prevalence and changes in incidence over time were analysed using Poisson regression and linear regression. Results: Prevalence of LAM in the seven countries ranged from 3.4 to 7.8/million women with significant variation, both between countries and between states in the USA. This variation did not relate to the number of pulmonary specialists in the region nor the percentage of population with health insurance, but suggests a large number of patients remain undiagnosed. The incidence of LAM from 2004 to 2008 ranged from 0.23 to 0.31/million women/per year in the USA, UK and Switzerland.
