Integrating Knowledge Management Practices Through a Problem Solving Framework

    Get PDF
Organizations increasingly focus their efforts on knowledge management practices to foster the creation, sharing and integration of knowledge. This paper proposes a framework for classifying practices for managing such knowledge based on their roles in problem solving. By integrating these practices through three value-added processes (identification, preservation and distribution), organizations improve their ability to learn and adapt to changing environments. Innovative business models that include these knowledge management processes will should help organizations prosper in the face of rapid, complex change

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO: THE ROLE OF REFERRALS ON ONLINE COMMUNITY MEMBER TURNOVER AND TENURE

    Get PDF
Communities are often faced with challenges associated with attracting and maintaining a membership base, which affects their ability to develop a pool of resources and ultimately impacts their sustainability. A potential resolution to this challenge lies in the members of the community referring non-members to the community – member referrals. While community joining has been acknowledged as important stage in the life cycle of community members; however, the way in which a member becomes aware of a community and its resulting influence on their engagement with the community has not been examined. This research-in-progress paper outlines the examination of the role of referrals on member turnover and tenure. Drawing upon theories of referrals from organizational behavior and marketing, the paper theorizes that referrals have the potential to facilitate the awareness of, and interest in, a community, which ultimately influences new members to return to, and stay, in a community

The B_s and D_s decay constants in 3 flavor lattice QCD

Capitalizing on recent advances in lattice QCD, we present a calculation of the leptonic decay constants f_{B_s} and f_{D_s} that includes effects of one strange sea quark and two light sea quarks. The discretization errors of improved staggered fermion actions are small enough to simulate with 3 dynamical flavors on lattices with spacings around 0.1 fm using present computer resources. By shedding the quenched approximation and the associated lattice scale ambiguity, lattice QCD greatly increases its predictive power. NRQCD is used to simulate heavy quarks with masses between 1.5 m_c and m_b. We arrive at the following results: f_{B_s} = 260 \pm 7 \pm 26 \pm 8 \pm 5 MeV and f_{D_s} = 290 \pm 20 \pm 29 \pm 29 \pm 6 MeV. The first quoted error is the statistical uncertainty, and the rest estimate the sizes of higher order terms neglected in this calculation. All of these uncertainties are systematically improvable by including another order in the weak coupling expansion, the nonrelativistic expansion, or the Symanzik improvement program.Comment: 4 page

Self-regulation: A new perspective on learning problems experienced by children born extremely preterm

    Get PDF
Survival rates are increasing for children born extremely preterm, yet despite the majority of these children having IQ scores within the average range, 50-70% of these children have later school difficulties. This paper reviews factors associated with academic difficulties in these children, emphasizing the contributions of executive functions (EF) and self-regulation. The roles of EF are examined separately, and also under the unifying construct of self-regulation; that is, the integration of various behavioural, cognitive, and affective elements. Improving self-regulatory skills could moderate the negative effects of EF deficits and inform interventions to improve the educational outcomes of these childre

"International Crowding Out": Concept and Policy Implications

The overvaluation of a currency "crowds out" the tradeable goods industries of the country and enhances the profit rates of foreign competitors. This asymmetry can bring about long-term changes in the competitiveness of the country's tradable goods industries, as for eign firms are able to use the quasirents to increase market share through aggressive promotion and large-scale investment in plant, product design, and personnel. The economic costs of an overvalued currency exceed those recognized by Martin Feldstein and the Reagan Administration.
