Las Vincas: del jardín a la farmacia

Las especies de Vinca, conocidas popularmente con varios nombres, son plantas herbáceas o subarbustivas de amplia distribución. Este género incluye especies muy apreciadas en todo el mundo como plantas ornamentales y de interés farmacológico, siendo en este sentido Catharanthus roseus (Vinca rosea) la más valorada. La actividad terapéutica se debe a la interacción y sinergia entre sus componentes químicos, destacando sobre todo las sustancias vincristina y vinblastina, alcaloides indólicos con reconocidas propiedades antitumorales, y la vincamina, utilizada en patologías cerebrovasculares por facilitar la circulación cerebral. En Canarias hay dos especies introducidas y naturalizadas en algunas islas: Catharanthus roseus y Vinca major. En este trabajo fundamentalmente bibliográfico, se tratan aspectos de la historia, de las características botánicas y de la distribución de estas plantas, a la vez que se indaga en su composición química, propiedades, modo de empleo y toxicidad, entre otros aspectos.Vinca species, popularly known by various names, are widely distributed tropical herbaceous or subshrubby plants. This genus includes species that are highly appreciated throughout the world as ornamental plants and of pharmacological interest, with Catharanthus roseus (Vinca rosea) being the most valued. The therapeutic activity is due to the interaction and synergy between its chemical components, highlighting especially the substances vincristine and vinblastine, indole alkaloids with recognized antitumor properties, and vincamine, used in cerebrovascular pathology to facilitate cerebral circulation.
