    A fundamental artifact of any academic research isthe data used as the basis of that research effort. A group ofresearchers, from institutions in multiple territories, hasembarked on an ambitious research project that is initially aimedat enhancing the teaching of software engineering for four-yearundergraduate programs. The research project details a set ofworkshops, for which the objective is the capture of data that willbe the basis of the research effort. The first of these workshopswas held in August of 2011, and is reported on in this paper. Theworkshop comprised software engineering educators andrepresentatives from the information technology industry. Thedata collection task sought to identify a set of topics that areconsidered suitable for teaching software engineering, along withidentification of the years and depth at which these topics shouldbe taught. The use of technology in the curriculum design processis seen as an important step forward and this issue is alsodiscussed

    Indication of electron neutrino appearance from an accelerator-produced off-axis muon neutrino beam

    The T2K experiment observes indications of nu(mu) -> nu(mu) e appearance in data accumulated with 1.43 x 10(20) protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with |Delta m(23)(2)| = 2.4 x 10(-3) eV(2), sin(2)2 theta(23) = 1 and sin(2)2 theta(13) = 0, the expected number of such events is 1.5 +/- 0.3(syst). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7 x 10(-3), equivalent to 2.5 sigma significance. At 90% C.L., the data are consistent with 0.03(0.04) < sin(2)2 theta(13) < 0.28(0.34) for delta(CP) = 0 and a normal (inverted) hierarchy

    Conformity and controversies in the diagnosis, staging and follow-up evaluation of canine nodal lymphoma: a systematic review of the last 15 years of published literature

    Diagnostic methods used in the initial and post-treatment evaluation of canine lymphoma are heterogeneous and can vary within countries and institutions. Accurate reporting of clinical stage and response assessment is crucial in determining the treatment efficacy and predicting prognosis. This study comprises a systematic review of all available canine multicentric lymphoma studies published over 15 years. Data concerning diagnosis, clinical stage evaluation and response assessment procedures were extracted and compared. Sixty-three studies met the eligibility criteria. Fifty-five (87.3%) studies were non-randomized prospective or retrospective studies. The survey results also expose variations in diagnostic criteria and treatment response assessment in canine multicentric lymphoma. Variations in staging procedures performed and recorded led to an unquantifiable heterogeneity among patients in and between studies, making it difficult to compare treatment efficacies. Awareness of this inconsistency of procedure and reporting may help in the design of future clinical trials

    Chaos and localization in the wavefunctions of complex atoms NdI, PmI and SmI

    Wavefunctions of complex lanthanide atoms NdI, PmI and SmI, obtained via multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method, are analyzed for density of states in terms of partial densities, strength functions (Fk(E)F_k(E)), number of principal components (ξ2(E)\xi_2(E)) and occupancies (\lan n_\alpha \ran^E) of single particle orbits using embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of one plus two-body random matrix ensembles [EGOE(1+2)]. It is seen that density of states are in general multi-modal, Fk(E)F_k(E)'s exhibit variations as function of the basis states energy and ξ2(E)\xi_2(E)'s show structures arising from localized states. The sources of these departures from EGOE(1+2) are investigated by examining the partial densities, correlations between Fk(E)F_k(E), ξ2(E)\xi_2(E) and \lan n_\alpha \ran^E and also by studying the structure of the Hamiltonian matrices. These studies point out the operation of EGOE(1+2) but at the same time suggest that weak admixing between well separated configurations should be incorporated into EGOE(1+2) for more quantitative description of chaos and localization in NdI, PmI and SmI.Comment: There are 9 figure

    Ablation of Adipose-HO-1 Expression Increases White Fat over Beige Fat Through Inhibition of Mitochondrial Fusion and of PGC1alpha in Female Mice

    Background Hmox1 plays an important role in the regulation of mitochondrial bioenergetics and function by regulating cellular heme-derived CO and bilirubin. Previous studies have demonstrated that global disruption of HO-1 in humans and mice resulted in severe organ dysfunction. Methods We investigated the potential role of adipose-specific-HO-1 genetic ablation on adipose tissue function, mitochondrial quality control and energy expenditure by generating an adipo-HO-1 knockout mouse model (Adipo-HO-1-/-) and, in vitro, adipocyte cells in which HO activity was inhibited. Adiposity, signaling proteins, fasting glucose and oxygen consumption were determined and compared to adipocyte cultures with depressed levels of both HO-1/HO-2. Results Adipo-HO-1-/- female mice exhibited increased adipocyte size, and decreases in the mitochondrial fusion to fission ratio, PGC1, and SIRT3. Importantly, ablation of HO-1 in adipose tissue resulted in fat acquiring many properties of visceral fat such as decreases in thermogenic genes including pAMPK and PRDM16. Deletion of HO-1 in mouse adipose tissue led to complete metabolic dysfunction, an increase in white adipose tissue, a reduction of beige fat and associated increases in FAS, aP2 and hyperglycemia. Mechanistically, genetic deletion of HO-1 in adipose tissues decreased the mitochondrial fusion to fission ratio; disrupted the activity of the PGC1 transcriptional axis and thermogenic genes both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion Ablation of adipose tissue-HO-1 abridged PGC1 expression promoted mitochondrial dysfunction and contributed to an increase of pro-inflammatory visceral fat and abrogated beige-cell like phenotype
