    A sub-product construction of Poincare-Einstein metrics

    Given any two Einstein (pseudo-)metrics, with scalar curvatures suitably related, we give an explicit construction of a Poincar\'e-Einstein (pseudo-)metric with conformal infinity the conformal class of the product of the initial metrics. We show that these metrics are equivalent to ambient metrics for the given conformal structure. The ambient metrics have holonomy that agrees with the conformal holonomy. In the generic case the ambient metric arises directly as a product of the metric cones over the original Einstein spaces. In general the conformal infinity of the Poincare metrics we construct is not Einstein, and so this describes a class of non-conformally Einstein metrics for which the (Fefferman-Graham) obstruction tensor vanishes.Comment: 23 pages Minor correction to section 5.     London South Bank University is a large metropolitan institution with a broadly diverse undergraduate intake and an active widening participation policy. Teaching and learning strategies focus on employability, often through creative and innovative techniques. This paper reports the findings of three strands of research and the subsequent development of a new first-year undergraduate unit, A Practical Introduction to Marketing. Faced with broad diversity amongst new marketing students, a number of important challenges have been met by embedding core skills within its teaching and learning. These include easing transition into higher education, and developing the skills needed both for effective further study and for employability. A description and brief evaluation are offered

    The Generation Z Audience for In-App Advertising

    Abstract Purpose: The audience for in-app mobile advertising is comparable in size and viewing rate to that for TV but divides its attention across a highly fragmented selection of apps, each competing for advertiser revenue. In market, the assumption is that this audience is deeply segmented, allowing individuals to be contextually targeted on the apps that define their interests and needs. But that assumption is not supported by the Laws of Double Jeopardy and Duplication of Viewing which closely predict usage in other mass media. Our purpose is to benchmark in-app audiences against these laws to better understand market structure. Method: We collected nearly three thousand hours of screen time data from a panel of Generation Z respondents and tested the predictive validity of two models against observed interactions with twenty-three popular apps in six categories over a week. Findings. Results show that contrary to industry assumptions, this audience for in-app advertising is not segmented. Engagement on individual apps and sharing rates between apps and app formats is predicted well. Originality/Value: Many authors have called for consistency in metrics to compare on and off-line media performance. This study bridges that gap, demonstrating how reach and frequency measures could inform digital scheduling for contextual targeting. Implications Optimising in-app advertising for short-term activation only limits its potential for brand-building. These findings encourage advertisers to schedule online campaigns for brand reach as well as sales lift, by advancing current understanding of audience behaviour

    Copyright © 2019 ISCA Automated evaluation of non-native pronunciation provides a consistent and more cost-efficient alternative to human evaluation. To that end, there is considerable interest in deriving metrics that are based on the cues human listeners use to judge pronunciation. Previous research reported the use of phonetic features such as vowel characteristics in automated spoken language evaluation. The present study extends this line of work on the significance of phonetic features in automated evaluation of L2 speech (both assessment and feedback). Predictive modelling techniques examined the relationship between various articulation rate metrics one the one hand, and the proficiency and L1 background of non-native English speakers on the other. It was found that the optimal predictive model was one in which the phonetic details of phoneme articulation were factored in the analysis of articulation rate.     Scaling function for the noisy Burgers equation in the soliton approximation

    We derive the scaling function for the one dimensional noisy Burgers equation in the two-soliton approximation within the weak noise canonical phase space approach. The result is in agreement with an earlier heuristic expression and exhibits the correct scaling properties.     Tripartite entanglement and threshold properties of coupled intracavity downconversion and sum-frequency generation

    The process of cascaded downconversion and sum-frequency generation inside an optical cavity has been predicted to be a potential source of three-mode continuous-variable entanglement. When the cavity is pumped by two fields, the threshold properties have been analysed, showing that these are more complicated than in well-known processes such as optical parametric oscillation. When there is only a single pumping field, the entanglement properties have been calculated using a linearised fluctuation analysis, but without any consideration of the threshold properties or critical operating points of the system. In this work we extend this analysis to demonstrate that the singly pumped system demonstrates a rich range of threshold behaviour when quantisation of the pump field is taken into account and that asymmetric polychromatic entanglement is available over a wide range of operational parameters.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figure

    Global priorities for conservation across multiple dimensions of mammalian diversity

    Conservation priorities that are based on species distribution, endemism, and vulnerability may underrepresent biologically unique species as well as their functional roles and evolutionary histories. To ensure that priorities are biologically comprehensive, multiple dimensions of diversity must be considered. Further, understanding how the different dimensions relate to one another spatially is important for conservation prioritization, but the relationship remains poorly understood. Here, we use spatial conservation planning to (i) identify and compare priority regions for global mammal conservation across three key dimensions of biodiversity-taxonomic, phylogenetic, and traits-and (ii) determine the overlap of these regions with the locations of threatened species and existing protected areas. We show that priority areas for mammal conservation exhibit low overlap across the three dimensions, highlighting the need for an integrative approach for biodiversity conservation. Additionally, currently protected areas poorly represent the three dimensions of mammalian biodiversity. We identify areas of high conservation priority among and across the dimensions that should receive special attention for expanding the global protected area network. These high-priority areas, combined with areas of high priority for other taxonomic groups and with social, economic, and political considerations, provide a biological foundation for future conservation planning efforts
