Two-phase potential flow
Some features of two recent approaches of two-phase potential flow are presented. The first approach is based on a set of progressive examples that can be analyzed using common techniques, such as conservation laws, and taken together appear to lead in the direction of a general theory. The second approach is based on variational methods, a classical approach to conservative mechanical systems that has a respectable history of application to single phase flows. This latter approach, exemplified by several recent papers by Geurst, appears generally to be consistent with the former approach, at least in those cases for which it is possible to obtain comparable results. Each approach has a justifiable theoretical base and is self-consistent. Moreover, both approaches appear to give the right prediction for several well-defined situations
Slug flow
Introduction: When two phases flow concurrently in a pipe, they can distribute themselves in a number of different configurations. The gas could be uniformly dispersed throughout the liquid in the form of small bubbles. There could be large gas bubbles almost filling the tube. There could be an annulus of liquid and core of vapor with or without drops of liquid in it. The interface could be smooth or wavy. When one describes how the phases are distributed, one is specifying the flow regime. Such a description is necessary before any mathematical model can be constructed which will predict a quantity such as pressure drop It is naive to expect that a single mathematical model would adequately encompass all possible two-phase flow regimes, even for a single geometric configuration. Therefore, we shall begin by saying that for this work the results that have been obtained and the conclusions that have been drawn apply only to fully developed slug flow in a round vertical pipe. Slug flow is characterized by large bubblesalmost filling the tubewhich are separated by slugs of liquid. The nose of the bubble is rounded and the tail generally flat. One may or may not find small bubbles in the slug following the large bubble. A number of typical slug flow bubbles are pictured in Figures 4-10. Bubbles very similar to these have been studied by Dumistrescu (1), and Davis and Taylor (2). Both these references consider the same problem. How rapidly will a closed tube full of liquid empty when the bottom is suddenly opened to the atmosphere. The approach used by both authors is to assume that the asymptotic rise velocity (for large times) can be calculated from potential flow theory. The boundary condition at the pipe wall is that the velocity is axial. At the bubble boundary it is assumed that the pressure is constant, The problem is then to find the shape of the bobble that would satisfy the constant pressure boundary condition.(cont.) This was done approximately and in both cases the comparison with experiment was satisfactory though the deviations became large for small tubes. The work of Davis and Taylor, and Dumitrescu served as the starting point for this investigation. The boundary condition at the bubble wall for large bubbles, constant pressure, was still valid to an excellent approximation and the finiteness of the slug flow bubbles did not appear to make much difference in their rise velocity. In the next section, the fluctuation period, the mean density, and the pressure drop will be expressed in terms of the pipe area, the Taylor bubble rise velocity and the flow rates of the two phases. Quantum chaos in the atomic gravitational cavity
We report quantum chaos phenomena in the atomic gravitational cavity. We consider the reflection of cold atoms from a temporally modulated evanescent wave. In the globally chaotic regime, for small modulation, the squared energy distribution as a function of time demonstrates dynamical localization. However, for larger modulation delocalization occurs
Generic model of an atom laser
We present a generic model of an atom laser by including a pump and loss term
in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that there exists a threshold for the
pump above which the mean matter field assumes a non-vanishing value in
steady-state. We study the transient regime of this atom laser and find
oscillations around the stationary solution even in the presence of a loss
term. These oscillations are damped away when we introduce a position dependent
loss term. For this case we present a modified Thomas-Fermi solution that takes
into account the pump and loss. Our generic model of an atom laser is analogous

Theory of Bose-Einstein condensation in trapped gases
The phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases in traps is
reviewed from a theoretical perspective. Mean-field theory provides a framework
to understand the main features of the condensation and the role of
interactions between particles. Various properties of these systems are
discussed, including the density profiles and the energy of the ground state
configurations, the collective oscillations and the dynamics of the expansion,
the condensate fraction and the thermodynamic functions. The thermodynamic
limit exhibits a scaling behavior in the relevant length and energy scales.
Despite the dilute nature of the gases, interactions profoundly modify the
static as well as the dynamic properties of the system; the predictions of
mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with available experimental
results. Effects of superfluidity including the existence of quantized vortices
and the reduction of the moment of inertia are discussed, as well as the
consequences of coherence such as the Josephson effect and interference
phenomena. The review also assesses the accuracy and limitations of the

Primary prevention of diabetes mellitus type 2 and cardiovascular diseases using a cognitive behavior program aimed at lifestyle changes in people at risk: Design of a randomized controlled trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The number of people with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) is growing rapidly. To a large extend, this increase is due to lifestyle-dependent risk factors, such as overweight, reduced physical activity, and an unhealthy diet. Changing these risk factors has the potential to postpone or prevent the development of T2DM and CVD. It is hypothesized that a cognitive behavioral program (CBP), focused in particular on motivation and self-management in persons who are at high risk for CVD and/or T2DM, will improve their lifestyle behavior and, as a result, will reduce their risk of developing T2DM and CVD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>12,000 inhabitants, 30-50 years of age living in several municipalities in the semi-rural region of West-Friesland will receive an invitation from their general practitioner (n = 13) to measure their own waist circumference with a tape measure. People with abdominal obesity (male waist β₯ 102 cm, female waist β₯ 88 cm) will be invited to participate in the second step of the screening which includes blood pressure, a blood sample and anthropometric measurements. T2DM and CVD risk scores will then be calculated according to the ARIC and the SCORE formulae, respectively. People with a score that indicates a high risk of developing T2DM and/or CVD will then be randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 300) or the control group (n = 300).</p> <p>Participants in the intervention group will follow a CBP aimed at modifying their dietary behavior, physical activity, and smoking behavior. The counseling methods that will be used are <it>motivational interviewing </it>(MI) and <it>problem solving treatment </it>(PST), which focus in particular on intrinsic motivation for change and self-management of problems of the participants. The CBP will be provided by trained nurse practitioners in the participant's general practice, and will consists of a maximum of six individual sessions of 30 minutes, followed by 3-monthly booster sessions by phone. Participants in the control group will receive brochures containing health guidelines regarding physical activity and diet, and how to stop smoking. The primary outcome measures will be changes in T2DM and CVD risk scores. Secondary outcome measures will be changes in lifestyle behavior and cost-effectiveness and cost-utility ratios. All relevant direct and indirect costs will be measured, and there will be a follow-up of 24 months.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Changing behaviors is difficult, requires time, considerable effort and motivation. Combining the two counseling methods MI and PST, followed by booster sessions may result in sustained behavioral change.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN59358434</p
Temporal Integration of Movement: The Time-Course of Motion Streaks Revealed by Masking
Temporal integration in the visual system causes fast-moving objects to leave oriented βmotion streaksβ in their wake, which could be used to facilitate motion direction perception. Temporal integration is thought to occur over 100 ms in early cortex, although this has never been tested for motion streaks. Here we compare the ability of fast-moving (βstreakyβ) and slow-moving fields of dots to mask briefly flashed gratings either parallel or orthogonal to the motion trajectory. Gratings were presented at various asynchronies relative to motion onset (from to ms) to sample the time-course of the accumulating streaks. Predictions were that masking would be strongest for the fast parallel condition, and would be weak at early asynchronies and strengthen over time as integration rendered the translating dots more streaky and grating-like. The asynchrony where the masking function reached a plateau would correspond to the temporal integration period. As expected, fast-moving dots caused greater masking of parallel gratings than orthogonal gratings, and slow motion produced only modest masking of either grating orientation. Masking strength in the fast, parallel condition increased with time and reached a plateau after 77 ms, providing an estimate of the temporal integration period for mechanisms encoding motion streaks. Interestingly, the greater masking by fast motion of parallel compared with orthogonal gratings first reached significance at 48 ms before motion onset, indicating an effect of backward masking by motion streaks
The Role of the st313-td Gene in Virulence of Salmonella Typhimurium ST313
Multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium ST313 has emerged in sub-Saharan Africa causing severe infections in humans. Therefore, it has been speculated that this specific sequence type, ST313, carries factors associated with increased pathogenicity. We assessed the role in virulence of a gene with a yet unknown function, st313-td, detected in ST313 through comparative genomics. Additionally, the structure of the genomic island ST313-GI, harbouring the gene was determined. The gene st313-td was cloned into wild type S. Typhimurium 4/74 (4/74-C) as well as knocked out in S. Typhimurium ST313 02-03/002 (Ξst313-td) followed by complementation (02-03/002-C). Ξst313-td was less virulent in mice following i.p. challenge than the wild type and this phenotype could be partly complemented in trans, indicating that st313-td plays a role during systemic infection. The gene st313-td was shown not to affect invasion of cultured epithelial cells, while the absence of the gene significantly affects uptake and intracellular survival within macrophages. The gene st313-td was proven to be strongly associated to invasiveness, harboured by 92.5% of S. Typhimurium blood isolates (nβ=β82) and 100% of S. Dublin strains (nβ=β50) analysed. On the contrary, S. Typhimurium isolates of animal and food origin (nβ=β82) did not carry st313-td. Six human, non-blood isolates of S. Typhimurium from Belarus, China and Nepal harboured the gene and belonged to sequence types ST398 and ST19. Our data showed a global presence of the st313-td gene and in other sequence types than ST313. The gene st313-td was shown to be expressed during logarithmic phase of growth in 14 selected Salmonella strains carrying the gene. This study reveals that st313-td plays a role in S. Typhimurium ST313 pathogenesis and adds another chapter to understanding of the virulence of S. Typhimurium and in particular of the emerging sequence type ST313
Role of NAD(P)H Oxidase in Superoxide Generation and Endothelial Dysfunction in Goto-Kakizaki (GK) Rats as a Model of Nonobese NIDDM
Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in diabetics, and it has a complex etiology that operates on several levels. Endothelial dysfunction and increased generation of reactive oxygen species are believed to be an underlying cause of vascular dysfunction and coronary artery disease in diabetes. This impairment is likely the result of decreased bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) within the vasculature. However, it is unclear whether hyperglycemia per se stimulates NADPH oxidase-derived superoxide generation in vascular tissue. Methods and Results: This study focused on whether NADPH oxidase-derived superoxide is elevated in vasculature tissue evoking endothelial/smooth muscle dysfunction in the hyperglycemic (16964 mg%) Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat. By dihydroethidine fluorescence staining, we determined that aorta superoxide levels were significantly elevated in 9 month-old GK compared with age matched Wistar (GK; 19566%, Wistar; 10063.5%). Consistent with these findings, 10 26 mol/L acetylcholine-induced relaxation of the carotid artery was significantly reduced in GK rats compared with age matched Wistar (GK; 4167%, Wistar; 10065%) and measurements in the aorta showed a similar trend (p =.08). In contrast, relaxation to the NO donor SNAP was unaltered in GK compared to Wistar. Endothelial dysfunction was reversed by lowering of superoxide with apocynin, a specific Nox inhibitor.
