Promieniowanie słoneczne a witamina D i nowotwory skóry
Solar radiation is a part of the environment of man. Ultraviolet В radiation in required for the biosynthesis of vitamin D, which is generally associated with calcium metabolism and significantly influences a wide range of metabolic systems, therefore, has a strong influence on human health. However, exposure to sunlight carries potential risks to human health. Ultraviolet radiation is a known carcinogen and excessive sunlight exposure significantly increases risk of skin cancer
Otyłość - ważny problem zdrowotny
Obesity affecting more than 30% of adult population has been recognized as a major public health problem. Overweight and obesity generally are caused by unhealthy eating patterns and a lack of physical activity. Managing of obesity and overweight is of paramount importance because of well established relations between excess body mass and different diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and some types of cancer. Guidelines for reducing the risk of obesity and obesity-related disorders by dietary changes, increased physical activity and other lifestyle practices have been prepared by healthcare professionalists. WHO prepared the draft of global strategy on diet, physical activity and health, which should be adopted and developed at regional and national levels. Appropriate public knowledge on relationship between diet, physical activity, obesity and health provides a base for prevention of obesity and obesity related disorders
Rozwój genetyki i nauk żywieniowych a działania na rzecz zachowania zdrowia
Nutrition is a factor of major importance for health and also for development of diet related disorders. Nowadays there is no doubts that interaction between genes and nutrition plays a key role in health risk prediction and disease prevention. Individual nutritional status is determined not only by food availability but also by genes that control food intake, nutrient absorption and metabolism. On the other hand nutrients can significantly influence different genes expression and metabolic processes. Knowledge of genetic susceptibility to disease will help identify people at enhance risk and their response to diet. The prevalence of the types of genes of interest may differ between populations. The same genotype does not confer the same risk in all populations because of differences in environmental factors and nutritional habits. Therefore, populations should not simply copy each other’s dietary recommendations. Based on genetic and nutritional studies the best way for expression of healthier phenotypes should be found and used to promote health and prevent different diseases development

Białka roślinne i ich funkcjonalne działania
The primary role of the diet is to provide adequate quantities of nutrients to meet metabolic requirements and maintain optimal health. However, it has been shown that certain types of food or specific food components can affect a variety of body functions and provide specific health benefits. Diet containing such types of food may promote better health and play an important role in disease prevention by reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases. Vegetable proteins, especially legume proteins, have been recognized as factors influencing lipid metabolism. Hypocholesterolemic effects of different legume proteins have been documented. Hypotensive action of bioactive peptides derived from soy and lupin proteins has been reported. In soy a peptide of anti-mitotic activity was found and it may play a significant role in suppression of tumor development and cancer prevention. Diet rich in vegetables and vegetable proteins is related to lower risk of cardiovascular and cancer mortality
Ostatnio szczególne zainteresowanie wśród naukowców i lekarzy wzbudzają komórki macierzyste.
Exposure to particulate matter and cardiovascular disease risk
Epidemiological studies clearly indicate that both long- and short-term exposure to several environmental air pollutants cause significant increase in the risk of cardiovascular events, the observed strong relation between particulate matter air level and cardiovascular diseases may be explained by indirect or direct influence of these particles on different biological processes involved in disease development. Improvement of air quality standards and lowering of particulate matter exposure can significantly diminish cardiovascular disease risk and improve public health status
Oxidative stress markers during a course of hyperthyroidism
Introduction: Previous studies have shown the presence
of oxidative stress in hyperthyroid patients. The aim of this
study was to evaluate the influence of hyperthyroidism on
lipid peroxidation, plasma lipoprotein oxidation and antioxidant
status. We have estimated the clinical utility of the
biochemical parameters analysed as markers of oxidative
stress in hyperthyroidism.
Material and methods: Twenty five patients with overt hyperthyroidism
because of Graves’ disease or toxic multinodular
goitre and 20 healthy subjects were included in the
study. Lipid peroxidation was evaluated by measurement
of peroxides and malondialdehyde with 4-hydroxynonenal
(MDA + 4-HNE) concentrations. Autoantibodies against
oxidised LDL (anti-oxLDL) were assayed as a marker
of lipoprotein oxidation. Changes in the antioxidant defence
system were estimated by measurement of total antioxidant
status in serum (TAS) and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase
activity (SOD).
Results: A significant increase in serum concentration of
peroxides and MDA + 4-HNE was observed in patients with
hyperthyroidism. However, no difference was found in anti-oxLDL concentration and antioxidant status parameters
(TAS, SOD) between the control group and the patient group.
Conclusions: Our results indicate an intensification of the
oxidative processes caused by an excess of thyroid hormones,
which is not accompanied by a response from the antioxidant
system. Elevated concentrations of lipid peroxidation
products in serum, both peroxides and malondialdehyde
with 4-hydroxynonenal, may be useful as markers
of oxidative stress during the course of hyperthyroidism.Wstęp: Wcześniejsze badania wskazują na występowanie
stresu oksydacyjnego w stanach nadczynności tarczycy. Celem
niniejszej pracy była ocena wpływu nadczynności tarczycy
na procesy peroksydacji lipidów, oksydację lipoprotein
osocza oraz stan antyoksydacyjny organizmu. Oceniano
przydatność oznaczanych parametrów biochemicznych
jako wskaźników stresu oksydacyjnego w hipertyreozie.
Materiał i metody: Badaniami objęto 25 pacjentów z jawną
nadczynnością tarczycy w przebiegu choroby Gravesa-Basedowa
lub wola guzkowego nadczynnego oraz 20 zdrowych
ochotników stanowiących grupę kontrolną. Nasilenie procesów
peroksydacji lipidów oceniano poprzez pomiar stężenia
nadtlenków lipidów oraz pomiar stężenia dialdehydu
malonowego oznaczanego łącznie z 4-hydroksynonenalem
w surowicy (MDA + 4-HNE). Wskaźnikiem oksydacji
lipoprotein było stężenie przeciwciał przeciwko
oksydowanym LDL (anti-oxLDL, autoantibodies against oxidised
LDL). Zmiany w systemie obrony antyoksydacyjnej
organizmu oceniano poprzez pomiar całkowitego stanu
antyoksydacyjnego surowicy (TAS, total antioxidant status
in serum) oraz aktywność dysmutazy ponadtlenkowej erytrocytów
(SOD, superoxide dismutase activity).
Wyniki: W badanej grupie pacjentów z nadczynnością tarczycy
obserwowano zwiększone stężenie produktów peroksydacji
lipidów w surowicy, zarówno nadtlenków, jak
i MDA + 4-HNE. Nie stwierdzono istotnych statystycznie różnic między grupą badaną a kontrolną w stężeniu przeciwciał
przeciwko oksydowanym LDL oraz w wartościach
wskaźników obrony antyoksydacyjnej organizmu (TAS,
SOD).
Wnioski: Wyniki badań wskazują na nasilenie przemian
oksydacyjnych wywołanych działaniem wysokich stężeń
hormonów tarczycy, któremu nie towarzyszy odpowiedź
systemu antyoksydacyjnego organizmu. Podwyższone stężenie
produktów peroksydacji lipidów w surowicy, zarówno
nadtlenków, jak i dialdehydu malonowego oraz 4-hydroksynonenalu,
może być użytecznym wskaźnikiem stresu
oksydacyjnego w przebiegu nadczynności tarczycy
