Emerging Role of Flavonoids as the Treatment of Depression

    Get PDF
Depression is one of the most frequently observed psychological disorders, affecting thoughts, feelings, behavior and a sense of well-being in person. As per the WHO, it is projected to be the primitive cause of various other diseases by 2030. Clinically, depression is treated by various types of synthetic medicines that have several limitations such as side-effects, slow-onset action, poor remission and response rates due to complicated pathophysiology involved with depression. Further, clinically, patients cannot be given the treatment unless it affects adversely the job or family. In addition, synthetic drugs are usually single targeted drugs. Unlike synthetic medicaments, there are many plants that have flavonoids and producing action on multiple molecular targets and exhibit anti-depressant action by affecting multiple neuronal transmissions or pathways such as noradrenergic, serotonergic, GABAnergic and dopaminergic; inhibition of monoamine oxidase and tropomyosin receptor kinase B; simultaneous increase in nerve growth and brain-derived neurotrophic factors. Such herbal drugs with flavonoids are likely to be useful in patients with sub-clinical depression. This review is an attempt to analyze pre-clinical studies, structural activity relationship and characteristics of reported isolated flavonoids, which may be considered for clinical trials for the development of therapeutically useful antidepressant

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has evolved to be as gold standard treatment for gall bladder disease and is the most common laparoscopic procedure performed worldwide. In recent times, the innovative techniques of Natural orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) and Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) have been applied as a step forward towards scar less surgery with added benefits of less pain and less analgesic requirement, shorter hospital stay, quick return to work. Methods: A retrospective study of 50 patients admitted with gall bladder disease through outdoor for laparoscopic cholecystectomy from November 2018 to January 2019 in Maharishi Markandeshwar Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Mullana (AMBALA) were randomized into two groups of  25 each for Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILC) and standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) comparing the operative time, outcome and  complications. Results: 50 patients admitted to MMIMSR Mullana from November 2018 to January 2019 with gall bladder disease were divided into two groups of 25 each who underwent three port SILC and four port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (4PLC). The average intra-operative time in SILC (80.56 mins) was significantly more than standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The average length of stay in the hospital for SILC was 1.8 days (1-3 days), was significantly less than in standard four port laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Incidence of Intraoperative complications were more in SILC than standard LC.Conclusions: SILC as the newer novel technique had better outcomes in terms of cosmesis, early discharge, shorter stay at hospital

Purpose – This study aims to examine the literature on consumer financial capability. By analyzing the research trends, theories, definitions and themes, the literature on financial capability is synthesized, and agenda for future research is suggested. A framework is presented that portrays the antecedents as well as the outcomes of financial capability and their interlinkages. Design/methodology/approach – Following a systematic approach, the review is based on 215 articles published during January 2007 and–March 2022, retrieved from Scopus. It presents the definitions and theories of financial capability, publication trends, influential articles, prominent authors, prolific journals and countries publishing on financial capability. Using bibliographic coupling, the intellectual structure of the topic is explored, along with offering a framework through content analysis. Findings – The bibliographic coupling analysis identifies four major clusters of research themes and capability theory appeared to be the most prominent theory. The synthesis draws upon five conceptual definitions of financial capability. Based on the discussion, in this review, financial capability is defined as an individual ability to apply appropriate financial knowledge, perform desirable financial behaviors and take available financial opportunities for achieving financial well-being. A conceptual framework delineates the synthesized literature and propositions based on this framework and relevant research are proposed. Finally, directions for future research are discussed. Originality/value – This paper is an attempt to offer a comprehensive synthesis of the scholarship on financial capability and its conceptualization. It further proposes an extensive future research agenda. The study has implications for financial services providers relating to retail bank marketing

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare autoimmune disease with multi‐system involvement. It involves the upper respiratory tract, lungs and kidneys. A 36-year-old female patient presented with complaints of low-grade fever, dry cough and loss of appetite initially followed by dyspnea, purpuric skin lesions, right lower limb swelling with pain and redness. Her chest radiograph revealed right upper lobe cavitary lesion with consolidation in right lower lobe. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was detected in sputum and Broncho alveolar lavage (BAL) via Cartridge based nucleic acid amplification assay (CB-NAAT). Later, Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography (CTPA) revealed bilateral pulmonary artery thromboembolism. Furthermore, her C-ANCA was positive, serum creatinine was rising, urine microscopy had red cell casts and lower limb venous doppler revealed DVT. Histopathological examination of the skin lesion revealed vasculitis. Based on the above findings, diagnosis of GPA was comfortably made. Patient improved with pulse steroids, cyclophosphamide, anticoagulants and anti-tuberculous therapy (ATT). Keywords: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Pulmonary thrombo-embolism, deep venous thrombosis, vasculitis, c-ANCA

Journal of behavioral and experimental finance: a bibliometric overview

    Get PDF
Behavioral science has made a considerable contribution to finance. To gain an understanding of the scientific contributions emerging from all fields of finance with a behavioral perspective, this paper reviews the content of the major journal dedicated to behavioral finance, the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance (JBEF), since its foundation 8 years ago. For this purpose, we employ bibliometrics and content analysis to shed light on the publication trends and intellectual structure of the JBEF, obtaining numerous intriguing findings. First, the JBEF is still a young journal, and its numbers of publications and citations have grown significantly since its inception. Second, though there are contributions from all parts of the world, the United States is acknowledged as contributing the most to the JBEF. Diverse authors have contributed to the journal, but those affiliated with the University of Innsbruck and Macquarie University lead the list. Third, most of the studies have used the theoretical underpinnings of behavioral theory and prospect theory. Methodologically, most of the studies are empirical and primarily based on quantitative research designs, archival data and regression analysis. Fourth, the JBEF’s contributions concern eight intellectual clusters—namely personal characteristics and national cultures; psychological factors, financial literacy and robo-advising; investor sentiment and stock market volatility; asset market experiments; overconfidence and the disposition effects in the stock market; externalities (COVID-19) and financial markets; socially responsible investing; and herding behavior in financial markets. Finally, “behavioral finance” is the most prominently used author keyword in the JBEF’s publications, followed by “financial literacy”. All in all, these findings should offer readers a retrospection of scholarly contributions from the JBEF

The psychological antecedents of personal financial management behavior : a meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose: The intent of this study is to aggregate, in a measurable form, the results of previous studies on the association between personal financial management behavior (PFMB) and six psychological factors, which are financial attitude, financial self-efficacy, self-control, materialism, internal locus of control (LOC), and external LOC. Design/methodology/approach: A stack of 32 research documents that investigated 52 relationships between various psychological variables and PFMB was analyzed using the meta-analysis technique. Along with the overall meta-analysis, a comprehensive subgroup analysis was also undertaken counseled to determine whether the results contrast on account of the age group of the sample and the economy of the country to which the sample belongs. Findings: The overall meta-analysis findings do not support the association between PFMB and the various explanatory variables except for the significant positive association with self-control. In contrast, a subgroup study revealed that self-control (positively) and materialism (negatively) were found to be significantly associated with PFMB among adults. The association between internal LOC and PFMB is significant and positive among the young. Interestingly, self-control appeared to be significantly and positively associated with PFMB in developed countries. In developing countries, financial attitude, financial self-efficacy and internal LOC are significantly and positively associated with PFMB. Originality/value: Distinct from other review papers, this meta-analysis quantitatively cumulates and reconciles the conflicting findings on the linkage between psychological predictors and PFMB. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis on the topic. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited

    No full text
Purpose: This study aims to explore the impact of the containment measures during COVID-19 on individuals’ finances, financial resilience during such distress and identifying the most financially vulnerable among them. Tracing such impact during the pandemic has been challenging due to a lack of representative data. This paper addresses this gap in the present study. Design/methodology/approach: A survey has been conducted using a structured questionnaire containing various items that portray the impact on income, spending, saving, investment, borrowing, insurance and retirement. The sample consists of 699 respondents and purposive and snowball sampling has been used for data collection. The results are presented and analyzed using infographics and frequency distributions. This study conducts an analysis of variance and Chi-square tests for significance. Findings: This paper finds a fall in income and limited ability to cope with the current economic conditions. The survey highlights inadequate savings and insurance, weak retirement planning, outstanding loans and under-diversified investments inhibiting financial resilience even among the higher-income group. Particularly, lower-income strata, women and not much educated are most financially vulnerable. Further, no substantial financial benefits have been received from the government and people rely on their usual income sources. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that measures the pandemic’s impact on personal finances, especially in connection with a developing economy like India. Policy interventions are critical to the millions for whom financial literacy is required now more than ever. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited
