Unusual presentation of uterine rupture in modern obstetrics

    Get PDF
Rupture of uterus in modern obstetrics is rare. If not diagnosed in time maternal morbidity and mortality are very high. We are reporting a case initially referred as gravida2 abortion1 with breech presentation in active labour and was taken up for emergency LSCS, and on opening up a posterior uterine wall rupture was noted, later it was noted that the patient misled us by hiding her obstetric history of undergoing repeated MTPs. This case has been published in view of misleading history, variable clinical presentation & to emphasize the need of definitive surgeries in order to save the life of the individual

Investigation of electrochemical behavior of plasma nitrided Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy in Hanks’ Solution

Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-7Nb was plasma nitrided using inductively coupled RF Plasma with 100% Nitrogen at 750, 800 and 850°C for 4 h. Micro Raman studies show the formation of titanium nitrides. Potentiodynamic polarization studies in Hanks’ solution show the corrosion resistance of the untreated samples to be better than the treated samples. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) studies show higher charge transfer resistance and lower double layer capacitance for the substrate compared to the nitrided samples. FESEM images of samples immersed in SBF show that growth of apatite is more and the size of deposits are larger on nitrided samples as compared to that on the untreated substrate. Nitrided samples immersed in Hanks’ solution for 7 days show higher amount of calcium, phosphorous and oxygen than the substrate

Leiomyoma of the uterus in one of the common benign gynecological conditions and one of the rare locations of a fibroid is from the cervix with an incidence of upto 2%. We are reporting a case of a 46 year old patient who came with complaints of mass per abdomen and with a history of retention of urine twice in the past one and half months. Abdominal examination revealed a firm mass of 24 weeks size gravid uterus with restricted mobility arising from the pelvis and a speculum examination, showed a mass protruding through the vagina with all the walls ballooned out and it appeared as if a head of the baby was protruding out in second stage of labor. It was a 1.9kg central cervical fibroid with a typical "Lantern on top of St. Paul’s cathedral" appearance which was operated without any complications

Impact of socio demographic factors on the severity of maternal anaemia

Background: Anaemia in pregnancy is still a global problem and one of the leading causes for maternal mortality and morbidity in most of the developing countries. The aim and objective of the study was to know the role of various sociodemographic factors and its association with maternal anaemia. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study at a Community Health Centre in Chamarajanagar District. For the study purpose WHO categorization of severity of anaemia was used. All the delivered patients were divided into mild, moderate or severe degree of anaemia based on their hemoglobin (Hb%) levels at the time of delivery and the impact of the sociodemographic factors on the degree of anaemia was expressed as the percentage of severity. Results: A total of 1270 cases were included in the study out of which 270 (21.3%) of pregnant women had a normal hemoglobin level and 503 (39.6%) parturient were mildly anaemic, 460 (36.2%) with moderately anaemic and 2.9% (n=37) were severely anaemic. Patients who had an interpregnancy interval of >2 years, 60 % had normal Hb% and only 1.6% were severely anaemic. Moderate and severe anaemia was found more in women who were illiterates and an education level of less than high school level. Conclusions: Anaemia in pregnancy is associated with several social and demographic factors. Strategies must be taken from the conceptional level itself by providing proper antenatal counseling and women should be economically empowered and good antenatal care must be made available and accessible to all of them. Even with routine iron prophylaxis in pregnancy, still the prevalence of anaemia is high, so should we consider one or two doses of routine parenteral iron therapy for all pregnant women

Studies on Parental Synchronization in Flowering for Hybrid Seed Production in Onion (Allium cepa L.)

An experiment was conducted at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore, in Rabi season during 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 to study the flowering of Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Lines CMS (A) and pollinator lines (C) of onion cv. Arka Lalima for working out effective synchrony in hybrid seed production. Results indicated that days to 100% flowering and days to complete flowering in a plant varied significantly in the parental lines and C line was found to be earlier than A line by 12 days and 25 days, respectively. The duration of flowering in a plant was also less in C line (23 days) than in A line (29 days). Due to lack of floral synchrony between parental lines, pollen availability becomes a limiting factor in hybrid seed production in cv. Arka Lalima. Delay in planting of C lines by a week after planting A lines resulted in synchronised flowering of parental lines at peak flowering stage. This also resulted in higher fruit set (80%) and hybrid seed yield (15g/plant) as against planting of A and C lines simultaneously (29.54% and 0.38g, respectively)

The legume pod borer or cotton bollworm [Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner)] is one of the most important constraint to crop production globally. It is polyphagous and attacks more than 182 plant species, including cotton (Plate 1.1a), chickpea (plate 1.1b), pigeonpea (Plate 1.1c), peas, cowpea, sunfower, sorghum, groundnut, field beans, tomato (plate 1.1d) tobacco, maize and a range of vegetables, fruit crops and tree species. Helicoverpa armigera is widely distributed in Asia, Africa, Australia and the Mediterranean Europe
