    Carrier relaxation in Si/SiO2_2 quantum dots

    Carrier relaxation due to both optical and nonradiative intraband transitions in silicon quantum dots in SiO2_2 has been considered. Interaction of confined holes with optical phonons has been studied. The Huang-Rhys factor is calculated for such transitions. This changes dramatically in the presence of defect sites, even those that carry no spin. We examine the excess susceptibilities, longitudinal and transverse, due to one or more defects at arbitrary separations in a finite Ising chain with nearest-neighbor couplings. Adapting matrix methods to finite chains we derive exact formulas valid at all T>0

    Atomistic sp3d5s* tight-binding theory of PbSe and PbS nanocrystals is developed. It is demonstrated, that the valley splittings of confined electrons and holes strongly and peculiarly depend on the geometry of a nanocrystal. When the nanocrystal lacks a microscopic center of inversion and has T_d symmetry, the splitting is strongly suppressed as compared to the more symmetric nanocrystals with O_h symmetry, having an inversion center.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Photoluminescence Stokes shift and exciton fine structure in CdTe nanocrystals

    The photoluminescence spectra of spherical CdTe nanocrystals with zincblende structure are studied by size-selective spectroscopic techniques. We observe a resonant Stokes shift of 15 meV when the excitation laser energy is tuned to the red side of the absorption band at 2.236 eV. The experimental data are analyzed within a symmetry-based tight-binding theory of the exciton spectrum, which is first shown to account for the size dependence of the fundamental gap reported previously in the literature. The theoretical Stokes shift presented as a function of the gap shows a good agreement with the experimental data, indicating that the measured Stokes shift indeed arises from the electron-hole exchange interaction.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, LaTe

    Elastic Light Scattering by Semiconductor Quantum Dots

    Elastic light scattering by low-dimensional semiconductor objects is investigated theoretically. The differential cross section of resonant light scattering on excitons in quantum dots is calculated. The polarization and angular distribution of scattered light do not depend on the quantum-dot form, sizes and potential configuration if light wave lengths exceed considerably the quantum-dot size. In this case the magnitude of the total light scattering cross section does not depend on quantum-dot sizes. The resonant total light scattering cross section is about a square of light wave length if the exciton radiative broadening exceeds the nonradiative broadening. Radiative broadenings are calculated

    Anomalous circular polarization of magneto-photoluminescence from individual CdSe nanocrystals

    We study the low-temperature magneto-photoluminescence (PL) from individual CdSe nanocrystals. Nanocrystals having a small "bright" exciton fine structure splitting (<<0.5 meV) exhibit a conventional left- and right-circularly polarized Zeeman PL doublet in applied magnetic fields. In contrast, nanocrystals with large fine structure splitting (>>1 meV) show an anomalous magneto-PL polarization, wherein the lower-energy peak becomes circularly polarized with increasing field, while the higher-energy peak remains linearly polarized. This unusual behavior arises from strong mixing between the absorbing and emitting bright exciton levels due to strong anisotropic exchange interactions.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; submitte
