    Much of Pew Research Center's earlier research on the U.S. news environment has focused on the public's news consumption habits and views toward the news media. This major new undertaking was designed to capture the other side of the equation, asking U.S.-based journalists to provide their own perspective on the industry they work in.The main source of data for this study is a Pew Research Center survey of 11,889 U.S.-based journalists who are currently working in the news industry and said that they report, edit or create original news stories in their current job. The survey was conducted online between Feb. 16 and March 17, 2022.

    Do final state interactions obscure short range correlation effects in quasielastic A(e,ep)A(e,e'p) scattering?

    Are short range correlations in the ground state of the target nucleus (initial state correlations ISC)observable inexperiments on quasielastic A(e,ep)A(e,e'p) scattering at large missing momentum pmp_{m}? Will the missing momentum spectrum observed at CEBAF be overwhelmed by final state interactions of the struck proton? Taking the 4He^{4}He nucleus with a realistic model wave function for a testing ground, we present a full calculation of the missing momentum distribution in inclusive 4He(e,ep)^{4}He(e,e'p) scattering. We find a complex interplay and strong quantum-mechanical interference of FSI and ISC contributions to scattering at large pmp_{m}, with drastic change of the interference pattern from the (anti)parallel to transverse kinematics. We show that in all the kinematical conditions, for missing momenta p_{m}\gsim 1\,fm1^{-1}, quasielastic scattering is dominated by FSI effects and the sensitivity to details of the nuclear ground state is lost. The origin of the FSI dominance is well understood and can be traced back to the anisotropic behaviour of FSI which is long ranged in the longitudinal direction and short ranged in the transverse direction in the opposite to the short ranged ground state correlations

    Measurement of gamma p --> K+ Lambda and gamma p --> K+ Sigma0 at photon energies up to 2.6 GeV

    The reactions gamma p --> K+ Lambda and gamma p --> K+ Sigma0 were measured in the energy range from threshold up to a photon energy of 2.6 GeV. The data were taken with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher facility, ELSA. Results on cross sections and hyperon polarizations are presented as a function of kaon production angle and photon energy. The total cross section for Lambda production rises steeply with energy close to threshold, whereas the Sigma0 cross section rises slowly to a maximum at about E_gamma = 1.45 GeV. Cross sections together with their angular decompositions into Legendre polynomials suggest contributions from resonance production for both reactions. In general, the induced polarization of Lambda has negative values in the kaon forward direction and positive values in the backward direction. The magnitude varies with energy. The polarization of Sigma0 follows a similar angular and energy dependence as that of Lambda, but with opposite sign.Comment: 21 pages, 25 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J.

    A Phenomenological Description of (\pi^{-}\Delta^{++}) Photo- and Electroproduction in Nucleon Resonance Region

    The (\pi^{-}\Delta^{++}) production on the nucleon by real and virtual photons is discussed as initial step in a simple model approach for the two pion photo- and electroproduction on the nucleon, with emphasis on nucleon resonance excitation which is of interest for new facilities like TJNAF. A calculation for (\pi^{-}\Delta^{++}) channel in resonance excitation region is presented and compared to existing experimental data along with a discussion of physical effects that we find to be of relevance. The calculation is proposed as a starting basis for the investigation of (N^{*}) electromagnetic form factors using experimental data about two pion production by real and virtual photons.Comment: 36 pages, 14 figures, to be published in Nucl.     Dynamical coupled-channel model of meson production reactions in the nucleon resonance region

    A dynamical coupled-channel model is presented for investigating the nucleon resonances in the meson production reactions induced by pions and photons. The model is based on an energy-independent Hamiltonian which is derived from a set of Lagrangians by using a unitary transformation method. By applying the projection operator techniques,we derive a set of coupled-channel equations which satisfy the unitarity conditions within the channel space spanned by the considered two-particle meson-baryon states and the three-particle ππN\pi\pi N state. We present and explain in detail a numerical method based on a spline-function expansion for solving the resulting coupled-channel equations which contain logarithmically divergent one-particle-exchange driving terms resulted from the ππN\pi\pi N unitarity cut. We show that this driving term can generate rapidly varying structure in the reaction amplitudes associated with the unstable particle channels. It also has large effects in determining the two-pion production cross sections. Our results indicate that cautions must be taken to interpret the NN^* parameters extracted from using models which do not include ππN\pi\pi N cut effects.Comment: 73 pages, 20 figure

    PHENIX Measurements of Heavy Flavor in Small Systems

    The study of heavy flavor production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions is a sensitive probe of the hot and dense matter created in such collisions. Installation of silicon vertex detectors in the PHENIX experiment, and increased performance of the BNL RHIC collider allowed collection of large amount of data on heavy flavor production in small colliding systems. In this talk we will present recent PHENIX results on open heavy flavor and quarkonia production in p+p, p+A, d+A, and He3+A colliding systems in a broad rapidity range, and discuss how these measurements help us to better understand all stages of nuclear collisions at high energy
