VLA Detection of the Ionized Stellar Winds Arising from Massive Stars in the Galactic Center Arches Cluster
The Galactic center Arches stellar cluster, detected and studied until now
only in the near-infrared, is comprised of at least one hundred massive (M>20
Msun) stars. Here we report the detection at centimeter wavelengths of radio
continuum emission from eight radio sources associated with the cluster. Seven
of these radio sources have rising spectral indices between 4.9 and 8.5 GHz and
coincide spatially with the brightest stars in the cluster, as determine from
JHK photometry and Brackett alpha and Brackett Gamma spectroscopy. Our results
confirm the presence of powerful ionized winds in these stars. The eighth radio
source has a nonthermal spectrum and its nature is yet unclear, but it could be
associated with a lower mass young star in the cluster.Comment: 6 pages, 2 embedded figures, accepted to ApJLetter
Treatment of Liver Metastases in Patients with Neuroendocrine Tumors: A Comprehensive Review
Patients diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET) often are also diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Liver Metastases (NLM) during the course of their disease. NLM can cause significant morbidity and mortality, oftentimes much more than compared to patients with NET. Treatment options have been limited in the past, focusing on surgical resections, for which only a minority of patients are candidates. However, developments of new treatment modalities have progressed rapidly and patients with NLM now have significantly more options, including surgical-directed therapies; liver-directed therapies; and nonsurgical, non-liver-directed therapies. This review provides information about the roles of hepatic resection, orthotopic liver resection, radiofrequency ablation, hepatic artery embolization and hepatic artery chemoembolization, hepatic artery radioembolization and selective internal radiation therapy, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy, systemic chemotherapy, biotherapies including somatostatin analogs and interferon-α, vascular endothelial growth factor and mTOR targets, and microRNA-regulated pathways. Given these new options, the clinician can tailor therapy specific to the patient diagnosed with NLM, thereby giving the patient the best possible chance of prolonged survival
Optical morphology of distant RATAN-600 radio galaxies from subarcsecond resolution NOT images
We present direct imaging data of 22 ultra steep spectrum radio sources
obtained at (or near) a subarcsecond seeing. The basic sample of 40 double
radio sources was selected from the RATAN-600 catalogue. The FRII-structure has
been confirmed with VLA and preliminary optical identifications which come from
the 6 m-telescope. As the RATAN-600 flux limit at 3.9 GHz ( 10mJy) is
fainter than that of major surveys, the sample may have high- contents. This
is also suggested by the faint magnitudes in the Hubble diagram. The final aim
is to create a homogeneous sample of high- radio galaxies in a well defined
strip around the sky, with faint radio limit and subarcsecond morphology down
to .
We could confirm 16 identifications down to 24. Most of the
extended objects have multicomponent structures as expected from other surveys
of high-redshift radio galaxies. We found five unresolved objects even with a
subarcsecond seeing. Of the remaining six objects, three are extremely faint
and the other three have such a complex environment that further observations
are needed to confirm the optical identification.Comment: A&AS in pres
Deep Radio Imaging of Globular Clusters and the Cluster Pulsar Population
We have obtained deep multifrequency radio observations of seven globular
clusters using the Very Large Array and the Australia Telescope Compact Array.
Five of these, NGC 6440, NGC 6539, NGC 6544, NGC 6624 and Terzan 5 had
previously been detected in a shallower survey for steep spectrum radio sources
in globular clusters (Fruchter and Goss 1990). The sixth, the rich globular
cluster, Liller 1, had heretofore been undetected in the radio, and the
seventh, 47 Tucanae, was not included in our original survey. High resolution 6
and 20 cm images of three of the clusters, NGC 6440, NGC 6539, NGC 6624 reveal
only point sources coincident with pulsars which have been discovered
subsequent to our first imaging survey. 21 and 18 cm images reveal several
point sources within a few core-radii of the center of 47 Tuc. Two of these are
identified pulsars, and a third, which is both variable and has a steep
spectrum, is also most likely a pulsar previously identified by a pulsed
survey. However, the 6, 20 and 90 cm images of NGC 6544, Liller 1 and Terzan 5
display strong steep-spectrum emission which cannot be associated with known
pulsars. The image of the rich cluster Terzan 5 displays numerous point sources
within , or 4 core radii of the cluster center. The density of these
objects rises rapidly toward the core, where an elongated region of emission is
found. The brightest individual sources, as well as the extended emission,
possess the steep spectra expected of pulsars. Furthermore, the flux
distribution of the sources agrees well with the standard pulsar luminosity
function. The total luminosity and number of objects observed suggest that
Terzan 5 contains more pulsars than any other Galactic globular cluster.Comment: 33 pages, 6 Postscript figures; Accepted for publication in the

VLA Limits for Intermediate Mass Black Holes in Three Globular Clusters
The observational evidence for central black holes in globular clusters has
been argued extensively, and their existence has important consequences for
both the formation and evolution of the cluster. Most of the evidence comes
from dynamical arguments, but the interpretation is difficult, given the short
relaxation times and old ages of the clusters. One of the most robust
signatures for the existence of a black hole is radio and/or X-ray emission. We
observed three globular clusters, NGC6093 (M80), NGC6266 (M62), and NGC7078
(M15), with the VLA in the A and C configuration with a 3-sigma noise of 36, 36
and 25 microJy, respectively. We find no statistically-significant evidence for
radio emission from the central region for any of the three clusters. NGC6266
shows a 2-sigma detection. It is difficult to infer a mass from these upper
limits due to uncertainty about the central gas density, accretion rate, and
accretion model.Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa
Neuroendocrine Liver Metastases and Orthotopic Liver Transplantation: The US Experience
Liver transplantation remains a controversial therapy for Neuroendocrine liver metastases (NLM), with coflicting suvival data reported. The aim was to assess the evolution of outcomes for patients transplanted for NLM in the US, both before and after the introduction of the MELD scoring system in 2002. The UNOS/OPTN database was reviewed to identify patients diagnosed with NLM who subsequently underwent a liver transplantation from 1988 to March 2011 (n = 184); Patient survival was determined using Kaplan-Meier methods and log-rank tests, and cox regression analysis was performed, using SPSS 15.0 (SPSS, Inc, Chicago, IL). The overall NLM patient survivals in the pre-MELD era were 79.5%, 61.4%, and 49.2% at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. After the introduction of the MELD score, NET/NLM patients had improved overall patient survivals at 1, 3, and 5 years of 84.7%, 65%, and 57.8%. Patients transplanted after 2002 had an improved survival outcome. Notably, the overall patient survival for NET is not significantly different when compared to the outcomes of patients transplanted for HCC, in the current era. This progress acknowleges the significant improvement in outcomes for NLM patients after liver transplantation and the potential for further gain in the survival of otherwise nonsurgical, terminal patients
Comparison of different methods of temporomandibular joint disc reconstruction - An animal model
The document attached has been archived with permission from the Australian Dental Association. An external link to the publisher’s copy is included. Article first published online: 12 MAR 2008The optimum method of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction has not been defined despite numerous surgical treatments and several well controlled clinical trials. Animal models offer an experimental method allowing direct comparison of standardized surgical techniques. Advanced osteoarthrosis was induced bilaterally in 12 mature merino sheep. Three months later unilateral surgical reconstruction was performed. Four sheep had discectomy alone, four discectomy with fresh TMJ disc grafts, and four discectomy with fresh auricular grafts. All three surgical methods resulted in some reversal and repair of the osteoarthritic process, with the best result being from the auricular graft, next discectomy alone, next the disc graft, with the untreated osteoarthritic joint showing the most advanced pathosis. This study supports the role of surgical reconstruction in advanced degenerative disease of the temporomandibular joint, in particular, auricular graft reconstruction.Nobumi Ogi, Jun-Ichi Ishimaru, Kenichi Kurita, Yujiro Handa, Robert H.B.
