    A fast algorithm for control and estimation using a polynomial state-space structure

    One of the major problems associated with the control of flexible structures is the estimation of system states. Since the parameters of the structures are not constant under varying loads and conditions, conventional fixed parameter state estimators can not be used to effectively estimate the states of the system. One alternative is to use a state estimator which adapts to the condition of the system. One such estimator is the Kalman filter. This filter is a time varying recursive digital filter which is based upon a model of the system being measured. This filter adapts the model according to the output of the system. Previously, the Kalman filter has only been used in an off-line capacity due to the computational time required for implementation. With recent advances in computer technology, it is becoming a viable tool for use in the on-line environment. A distributed Kalman filter implementation is described for fast estimation of the state of a flexible arm. A key issue, is the sensor structure and initial work on a distributed sensor that could be used with the Kalman filter is presented

    Computational tools for multi-linked flexible structures

    A software module which designs and tests controllers and filters in Kalman Estimator form, based on a polynomial state-space model is discussed. The user-friendly program employs an interactive graphics approach to simplify the design process. A variety of input methods are provided to test the effectiveness of the estimator. Utilities are provided which address important issues in filter design such as graphical analysis, statistical analysis, and calculation time. The program also provides the user with the ability to save filter parameters, inputs, and outputs for future use

    The effectiveness of a multidisciplinary foot care program for children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: an exploratory trial

    Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary foot-care, and to evaluate the methodological considerations of a trial of multidisciplinary care in juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Design: Exploratory randomised controlled trial. Subjects/Patients: Children/adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and inflammatory joint disease affecting the foot/ankle. Methods: Standard medical care was compared with a 12 month program of multidisciplinary foot-care informed by musculoskeletal ultrasound. This program was centred on strict disease control through rigorous examination and interventions delivered by a team comprised of a paediatric rheumatologist, podiatrist, physiotherapist and musculoskeletal ultrasonographer. Patients were assessed on foot impairment and disability scores using the Juvenile Arthritis Foot Disability Index. Results: Forty-four participants, aged 3-17 years were randomly assigned to receive the experimental (n = 21) or usual care (n = 23) interventions. There was an overall improvement in levels of foot related impairments in both groups over 12 months. Between-group differences in change scores for the Juvenile Arthritis Foot Disability Index were not statistically significant at 6 or 12 month follow-ups. Conclusion: The integrated multidisciplinary foot care interventions described in this trial were safe, but did not improve foot impairment levels relative to usual care. This trial identified several methodological challenges including recruitment/retention, difficulties with outcome tools and potential confounders.</p

    Evaluation of moisture sorption and diffusion characteristics of asphalt mastics using manual and automated gravimetric sorption techniques

    One of the most important factors influencing the durability of asphalt mixtures is moisture-induced damage resulting from the presence and the transport of moisture in pavements. Moisture-induced damage is an extremely complicated phenomenon that is not completely understood but believed to be governed by the interaction of moisture with asphalt mix components (mastic and aggregates). The objective of this study was, therefore, to characterize the sorption and diffusion characteristics of asphalt mastic using gravimetric vapor sorption techniques. Moisture transport, in the hygroscopic region, in asphalt mastics was studied using both static and dynamic gravimetric vapor sorption techniques to determine equilibrium moisture uptake and diffusion coefficients as a function of aggregate and filler types. For the 25-mm diameter thin asphalt mastic films and the testing conditions (23°C and 85% relative humidity) considered, the kinetics of moisture uptake obtained were characteristic of Fickian diffusion with a concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient. Equilibrium moisture uptake and diffusion coefficient estimated from the static measurements were comparable and of the same order of magnitude as those from dynamic sorption techniques. Both measurement techniques ranked the mixes similarly, which suggest either method could be used to characterize moisture transport in asphalt mastics. Equilibrium moisture uptake was relatively higher in mixtures containing granite aggregates compared with limestone aggregate. In contrast, the diffusion coefficient of limestone aggregate mastics was higher than granite. Thus, an inversely proportional relationship exists between moisture uptake and diffusivity of the asphalt mastics studied. The results suggest moisture transport is a function of aggregate type and that both equilibrium moisture uptake and diffusion coefficient are useful in studying moisture susceptibility in asphalt mixtures. The effect of mineral filler type on diffusion coefficient was minimal in the mastics containing granite aggregate but relatively high in mastic samples containing limestone aggregates. Diffusion coefficient was found to increase with sample thickness, which was unexpected because diffusion coefficient (in an isotropic material) is considered an intrinsic property that is independent of sample size. The results suggested anisotropic diffusivity can occur in asphalt mastics and could be attributed to factors, including mineralogy, microstructure, air voids, and the tendency of the aggregates to settle at the bottom of asphalt mastic with time. In addition to characterizing moisture transport in asphalt mastics, the results presented in this paper will be useful as inputs for numerical simulation of moisture damage in asphalt mixtures

    Mind-Body Skills Groups for Adolescents with Depression in Primary Care: A Pilot Study

    Objective: To determine acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of Mind-Body Skills Groups (MBSGs) as a treatment for depressed adolescents in primary care. Methods: A single arm clinical trial was conducted. A 10-week MBSG program was implemented in primary care. Participants completed self-report measures at baseline, post-intervention, and 3-months following the MBSGs. Measures included the Children’s Depression Inventory-2, Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, Self-Efficacy for Depressed Adolescents, rumination subscale of the Children’s Response Style Questionnaire, and a short acceptability questionnaire. Results: Participants included 43 adolescents. The total depression scores significantly improved following the MBSG intervention and continued to improve significantly from post-treatment to follow-up. Mindfulness, self-efficacy, rumination, and suicidal ideation all had significant improvement following the intervention. Acceptability of the program was strong, and attendance was excellent. Discussion: Preliminary evidence suggests that MBSGs are an acceptable treatment for primary care settings and lead to improved depression symptoms in adolescents.Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center and the Herbert Simon Family Foundation (070241-00002B

    Recruitment, growth and mortality of an Antarctic hexactinellid sponge, Anoxycalyx joubini.

    Polar ecosystems are sensitive to climate forcing, and we often lack baselines to evaluate changes. Here we report a nearly 50-year study in which a sudden shift in the population dynamics of an ecologically important, structure-forming hexactinellid sponge, Anoxycalyx joubini was observed. This is the largest Antarctic sponge, with individuals growing over two meters tall. In order to investigate life history characteristics of Antarctic marine invertebrates, artificial substrata were deployed at a number of sites in the southern portion of the Ross Sea between 1967 and 1975. Over a 22-year period, no growth or settlement was recorded for A. joubini on these substrata; however, in 2004 and 2010, A. joubini was observed to have settled and grown to large sizes on some but not all artificial substrata. This single settlement and growth event correlates with a region-wide shift in phytoplankton productivity driven by the calving of a massive iceberg. We also report almost complete mortality of large sponges followed over 40 years. Given our warming global climate, similar system-wide changes are expected in the future

    Tempered and non-tempered steam-flaked corn samples along with total mixed rations containing either tempered or non-tempered steam-flaked corn were exposed to flies and the environment for 21 hours. Exposure to flies and the environment increased (P\u3c0.05) generic E. coli, non-E. coli coliforms, total coliforms, and total plate count for the steamflaked corn samples independent of tempering. Tempering corn before steam-flaking increased total plate counts. Exposure to the environment and flies did not significantly (P\u3e0.05) alter microbial counts of total mixed rations regardless of tempering (Table 1). Generic E. coli coliforms were greater in total mixed rations when the corn was tempered, both before and after exposure to flies and the environment (P\u3c0.05). Similarly, total microbial plate counts were higher in steam-flaked corn samples when the corn was tempered (P\u3c0.05). A significant increase in response to grain tempering was also noted in non-E. coli coliforms and total microbial plate counts for the total mixed ration samples after exposure (Table 1). Following the initial experiments, 96 finishing beef steers were used to evaluate the effects of tempering steam-flaked corn on acid-resistant E. coli and total fecal coliforms. On day 56 of the feeding period, fecal samples were collected and analyzed for total and acidresistant E. coli and coliforms. No significant treatment difference was observed in the total fecal coliforms (P\u3e0.05), but acid-resistant (pH 2) non-E. coli and total fecal coliforms (Table 2) were lower in feces of cattle fed the tempered grain than those fed non-tempered grain
