Remembering Jerome and Forgetting Zwingli: The Zurich Latin Bible of 1543 and the Establishment of Heinrich Bullingerâs Church
In 1543 the Zurich reformers produced Latin translations of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha together with a revised edition of Erasmus' New Testament. The Biblia sacrosancta was a beautiful volume, Froschauerâs finest work. The work on the Old Testament was primarily done by Leo Jud, though it was completed by Theodor Bibliander and Konrad Pellikan after his death in 1542. The translation, together with the textual apparati, and the extensive prefaces form the most complete expression of the theological and ecclesiastical vision of the Zurich church under Heinrich Bullinger. Printed twelve years after the death of Huldrych Zwingli, the Bible embodied the ideals of a restored church that had to turn its back on its fallen founder. Zwingli was never mentioned and the model for a new, proud, and confident church was St Jerome, represented in the figure of the translator Leo Jud. Thomas Scott\u27s \u27The Force of Truth\u27: A diplomatic edition from the first and final editions with introduction and notes
Among the many inïŹuential preachers and writers of the Evangelical Revival in the Church of England in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century was Thomas Scott (1747-1821). The most widely read of all his publications was his 1779 Force of Truth which went through 12 editions in his lifetime. This thesis presents a diplomatic edition of that work, based on the 1821 Edinburgh imprint and includes the major textual variants from the ïŹrst 1779 London edition, with an introduction and annotations
Difficult to Show Properties and Utility Maximizing Brokers
This article is the winner of the Real Estate and the Internet manuscript prize (sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers) presented at the American Real Estate Society Annual Meeting. Brokers have long believed that difficult to show properties sell at lower prices and take longer to sell. Where difficult to show properties are defined as those properties that present extraordinary difficulties for a broker in arranging or showing the listing to a particular buyer. Buyersâ recent access to online real estate applications may make the cost of avoiding these properties prohibitive to brokers. Employing a hedonic pricing model and duration modeling techniques, this study finds that property price and marketing time are not significantly affected for these properties. The results suggest that brokers possess limited market power.
