    A fluorometric method for the estimation of tryptophan

    The various colorimetric methods now employed for the estimation of tryptophan are not specific for tryptophan but give colored products with many compounds containing the indole nucleus, including indole itself. In order to facilitate studies of the enzymatic synthesis of tryptophan from indole and serine by extracts of Neurospora (1), a search for a rapid, quantitative method for the estimation of tryptophan in the presence of indole was undertaken. Tauber (2) reported that tryptophan gives a green fluorescence when treated with 70 to 72 per cent perchloric acid at room temperature. Modification of this procedure has led to a method for the rapid estimation of tryptophan, without preliminary extraction of indole, in hydrolyzed or unhydrolyzed tryptophan-containing materials

    African amphibious fishes and the invasion of the land by the tetrapods

    Many species of amphibious fishes (fishes that live both in and out of water as normal parts of their life histories), belonging to a diverse array of families, occur in both freshwater and marine habitats in many parts of Africa. Some of the best studied forms are common in widely occurring intertidal habitats along much of the African seacoast. Several species of mudskippers (family Gobiidae, subfamily Oxudercinae) occur in mangrove areas and in other protected muddy or sandy habitats. A larger and more diverse group of blennies (family Blenniidae), some of which are called rockskippers, occur in mainly rocky habitats. The primary focus of this paper is on both the mud- and rockskippers. None of the living amphibious fishes are directly related to or descended from the ancient sarcopterygian fishes that appear to have been the ancestors of all tetrapods. However, studies of the biochemical, ecophysiological, functional morphological, and behavioural adaptations shown by the living forms for amphibious modes of life provide us with diverse examples of evolutionary successful, functional suites of adaptations that might also have been used, in varying combinations, by ancestral forms that could have occupied similar habitats

    Low-cost, multi-agent systems for planetary surface exploration

    The use of off-the-shelf consumer electronics combined with top-down design methodologies have made small and inexpensive satellites, such as CubeSats, emerge as viable, low-cost and attractive space-based platforms that enable a range of new and exciting mission scenarios. In addition, to overcome some of the resource limitation issues encountered with these platforms, distributed architectures have emerged to enable complex tasks through the use of multiple low complexity units. The low-cost characteristics of such systems coupled with the distributed architecture allows for an increase in the size of the system beyond what would have been feasible with a monolithic system, hence widening the operational capabilities without significantly increasing the control complexity of the system. These ideas are not new for Earth orbiting devices, but excluding some distributed remote sensing architectures they are yet to be applied for the purpose of planetary exploration. Experience gained through large rovers demonstrates the value of in-situ exploration, which is however limited by the associated high-cost and risk. The loss of a rover can and has happened because of a number of possible failures: besides the hazards directly linked to the launch and journey to the target-body, hard landing and malfunctioning of parts are all threats to the success of the mission. To overcome these issues this paper introduces the concept of using off-the-shelf consumer electronics to deploy a low-cost multi-rover system for future planetary surface exploration. It is shown that such a system would significantly reduce the programmatic-risk of the mission (for example catastrophic failure of a single rover), while exploiting the inherent advantages of cooperative behaviour. These advantages are analysed with a particular emphasis put upon the guidance, navigation and control of such architectures using the method of artificial potential field. Laboratory tests on multi-agent robotic systems support the analysis. Principal features of the system are identified and the underlying advantages over a monolithic single-agent system highlighted

    Hydrodynamic stability of swimming in ostraciid fishes: role of the carapace in the smooth trunkfish Lactophrys triqueter (Teleostei: Ostraciidae)

    The hydrodynamic bases for the stability of locomotory motions in fishes are poorly understood, even for those fishes, such as the rigid-bodied smooth trunkfish Lactophrys triqueter, that exhibit unusually small amplitude recoil movements during rectilinear swimming. We have studied the role played by the bony carapace of the smooth trunkfish in generating trimming forces that self-correct for instabilities. The flow patterns, forces and moments on and around anatomically exact, smooth trunkfish models positioned at both pitching and yawing angles of attack were investigated using three methods: digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV), pressure distribution measurements, and force balance measurements. Models positioned at various pitching angles of attack within a flow tunnel produced well-developed counter-rotating vortices along the ventro-lateral keels. The vortices developed first at the anterior edges of the ventro-lateral keels, grew posteriorly along the carapace, and reached maximum circulation at the posterior edge of the carapace. The vortical flow increased in strength as pitching angles of attack deviated from 0°, and was located above the keels at positive angles of attack and below them at negative angles of attack. Variation of yawing angles of attack resulted in prominent dorsal and ventral vortices developing at far-field locations of the carapace; far-field vortices intensified posteriorly and as angles of attack deviated from 0°. Pressure distribution results were consistent with the DPIV findings, with areas of low pressure correlating well with regions of attached, concentrated vorticity. Lift coefficients of boxfish models were similar to lift coefficients of delta wings, devices that also generate lift through vortex generation. Furthermore, nose-down and nose-up pitching moments about the center of mass were detected at positive and negative pitching angles of attack, respectively. The three complementary experimental approaches all indicate that the carapace of the smooth trunkfish effectively generates self-correcting forces for pitching and yawing motions — a characteristic that is advantageous for the highly variable velocity fields experienced by trunkfish in their complex aquatic environment. All important morphological features of the carapace contribute to producing the hydrodynamic stability of swimming trajectories in this species

    Categorisation and Detection of Dark Matter Candidates from String/M-theory Hidden Sectors

    We study well-motivated dark matter candidates arising from weakly-coupled hidden sectors in compactified string/MM-theory. Imposing generic top-down constraints greatly restricts allowed candidates. By considering the possible mechanisms for achieving the correct dark matter relic density, we compile categories of viable dark matter candidates and annihilation mediators. We consider the case where supersymmetry breaking occurs via moduli stabilisation and is gravitationally mediated to the visible and other hidden sectors, without assuming sequestering of the sector in which supersymmetry is broken. We find that in this case, weakly-coupled hidden sectors only allow for fermionic dark matter. Additionally, most of the mechanisms for obtaining the full relic density only allow for a gauge boson mediator, such as a dark ZZ'. Given these considerations, we study the potential for discovering or constraining the allowed parameter space given current and future direct detection experiments, and direct production at the LHC. We also present a model of a hidden sector which would contain a satisfactory dark matter candidate.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figure
