Same Same but Different: A history of the relationality between Aboriginal Australians and the Australian nation-state

    Get PDF
The Australian polity’s approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people has historically emphasised integration into the colonial nation-state. This essay argues that these paternalistic principles continue to inform 21st century policy to the detriment of meaningful progress towards coexistent Aboriginal sovereignty. Threading the Needle of Entrepreneurial Orientation of Firms: The Effects of Disruptive Threats and Turbulence on Corporate Social Responsibility Actions and Competitiveness

    Get PDF
Exploring the entrepreneurial actions of firms continues to be popular in management research, whereas literature on disruptions caused by business threats in those firms is limited. The research builds on the analysis of the complex disruptions that can threaten a firm. When firms are faced with unexpected circumstances, a business threat creates an inflexion point for the organization. This study examines the influence of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and corporate social responsibility on competitive advantage and how business threats transform these relationships. EO is recognized as a multi-dimensional managerial process representing a strategic orientation. The conceptualization of EO is manifested in firms by three specific characteristics of risk-taking, proactiveness and innovation. These dimensions contribute to the evolutionary process of managing opportunities through innovation, risks, and proactively addressing organizational threats. The study includes data from 142 entrepreneurs and managers using a cross sectional survey and SmartPLS for data analysis. Findings conclude that there was not a relationship between the mediator corporate social responsibility and entrepreneurial orientation or competitive advantage. Furthermore, moderation was tested as the level of concern for business threats. The moderator revealed no effect on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and corporate social responsibility, and therefore business threats did not change the entrepreneurial actions of the firm

Using photonic cooling systems to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cells and their means of electricity production

Photovoltaic (PV) systems generate electricity from the abundance of solar energy provided by the sun, making them a significant technology in utilising clean, renewable energy. It is in our best interest to achieve the maximum possible electrical output from these systems. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are a effective technology to resource clean energy, it is in our best interest to achieve the maximum possible electrical output from these cells. Through this meta-study we discuss how the efficiency of photovoltaic systems can be optimised using photonic cooling systems (PCS). The use of laser and doppler cooling upon photovoltaic (solar) cells combat the thermodynamic property of semiconductors where increases in temperature result in a decrease in electroconductive efficiency. PCS’ ability to bring materials to the mK range theoretically improves PV systems efficiency by more than double the current practical results. However, we show the inability for semiconductors to function at such low temperatures resulting in such cells acting as insulators in the mK range. Through this meta-study we have researched efficiency of PV cells and PCS through multiple paper analysis. Using databases such as Scopus and Nature where we recognise highly cited journals/papers while focusing upon PV and PCS as search parameters. Linking between their temperature, efficiency and success during practical testing

The Origin of [O II] Emission in Recently Quenched Active Galaxy Nucleus Hosts

We have employed emission-line diagnostics derived from DEIMOS and NIRSPEC spectroscopy to determine the origin of the [O II] emission line observed in six active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosts at z ~ 0.9. These galaxies are a subsample of AGN hosts detected in the Cl1604 supercluster that exhibit strong Balmer absorption lines in their spectra and appear to be in a post-starburst or post-quenched phase, if not for their [O II] emission. Examining the flux ratio of the [N II] to Hα lines, we find that in five of the six hosts the dominant source of ionizing flux is AGN continuum emission. Furthermore, we find that four of the six galaxies have over twice the [O II] line luminosity that could be generated by star formation alone given their Hα line luminosities. This strongly suggests that AGN-excited narrow-line emission is contaminating the [O II] line flux. A comparison of star formation rates calculated from extinction-corrected [O II] and Hα line luminosities indicates that the former yields a five-fold overestimate of the current activity in these galaxies. Our findings reveal the [O II] line to be a poor indicator of star formation activity in a majority of these moderate-luminosity Seyferts. This result bolsters our previous findings that an increased fraction of AGN at high redshifts is hosted by galaxies in a post-starburst phase. The relatively high fraction of AGN hosts in the Cl1604 supercluster that show signs of recently truncated star formation activity may suggest that AGN feedback plays an increasingly important role in suppressing ongoing activity in large-scale structures at high redshift

Séance d’apprentissage interprofessionnel animée par un pharmacien pour les résidents en médecine familiale spécialisés dans les soins liés au VIH

Implication Statement We developed a pharmacist-led one-month teaching rotation for medical residents to learn HIV pharmacotherapy.  This interprofessional education (IPE) was deemed extremely valuable by postgraduate-year-3 residents who intended to have a future practice in HIV care.  The overarching concept of this rotation was for the medical trainee to “become-the-pharmacist”, learning to recognize, prevent, and manage drug-related issues in HIV patients.

Handedness and schizotypy in a Japanese sample: an association masked by cultural effects on hand usage

    Get PDF
Previous research has shown a robust association between schizotypy and mixed/ambiguous-handedness, but little is known about the universality of this relationship outside Western cultures. The present paper examines this issue in a sample of 413 Japanese students administered (in Japan) the Annett handedness questionnaire and a schizotypy scale (STA). Conventional analyses of current hand preference, using several indices derived from the Annett scale, mostly failed to replicate previous findings. However, there was a significant tendency for greater use of either hand in highly schizotypal males. Furthermore, a significant association between schizotypy and non-right-handedness was found—again only in males—after correcting for the effects of early switching of hand usage, presumed to be due to cultural pressure against left-handedness in Japanese society. These results were found to be highly convergent with findings previously reported for clinical schizophrenia

Small Food Store Retailers’ Willingness to Implement Healthy Store Strategies in Rural North Carolina

Access to supermarkets is lacking in many rural areas. Small food stores are often available, but typically lack healthy food items such as fresh produce. We assessed small food store retailer willingness to implement 12 healthy store strategies to increase the availability, display, and promotion of healthy foods and decrease the availability, display, and promotion of tobacco products. Interviews were conducted with 55 small food store retailers in three rural North Carolina counties concurrently with store observations assessing current practices related to the strategies. All stores sold low-calorie beverages, sugar-sweetened beverages, candy and cigarettes. Nearly all sold smokeless tobacco and cigars/cigarillos, and 72% sold e-cigarettes. Fresh fruits were sold at 30.2% of stores; only 9.4% sold fresh vegetables. Retailers reported being most willing to stock skim/low-fat milk, display healthy snacks near the register, and stock whole wheat bread. About 50% were willing to stock at least three fresh fruits and three fresh vegetables, however only 2% of stores currently stocked these foods. Nearly all retailers expressed unwillingness to reduce the availability of tobacco products or marketing. Our results show promise for working with retailers in rural settings to increase healthy food availability in small food stores. However, restrictions on retail tobacco sales and marketing may be more feasible through local tobacco control ordinances, or could be included with healthy foods ordinances that require stores to stock a minimum amount of healthy foods
