    Exogenous spatial precuing reliably modulates object processing but not object substitution masking

    Object substitution masking (OSM) is used in behavioral and imaging studies to investigate processes associated with the formation of a conscious percept. Reportedly, OSM occurs only when visual attention is diffusely spread over a search display or focused away from the target location. Indeed, the presumed role of spatial attention is central to theoretical accounts of OSM and of visual processing more generally (Di Lollo, Enns, & Rensink, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General 129:481–507, 2000). We report a series of five experiments in which valid spatial precuing is shown to enhance the ability of participants to accurately report a target but, in most cases, without affecting OSM. In only one experiment (Experiment 5) was a significant effect of precuing observed on masking. This is in contrast to the reliable effect shown across all five experiments in which precuing improved overall performance. The results are convergent with recent findings from Argyropoulos, Gellatly, and Pilling (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance 39:646–661, 2013), which show that OSM is independent of the number of distractor items in a display. Our results demonstrate that OSM can operate independently of focal attention. Previous claims of the strong interrelationship between OSM and spatial attention are likely to have arisen from ceiling or floor artifacts that restricted measurable performance

    Formation and annihilation of nanocavities during keV ion irradiation of Ge

    Nanocavities in Ge(111) created by 5 keV Xe ion irradiation are characterized by ex situ transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. Nanocavities nucleate near the surface and then undergo thermal migration. Nanocavities with average diameter of 10 nm and areal density of 5.1 x 10-3 nm-2 are observed at 773 K, while nanocavities with average diameter of 2.9 nm and areal density of 3.1 x 10-3 nm-2 are observed at 673 K. The estimated Xe gas pressure inside the nanocavities is 0.035 GPa at 773 K, much smaller than the estimated equilibrium pressure 0.38 GPa. This result suggests that the nanocavities grow beyond equilibrium size at 773 K. The nanocavities are annihilated at the surface to form surface pits by the interaction of displacement cascades of keV Xe ions with the nanocavities. These pits are characterized by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy. Pits are created on Ge(111) and Ge(001) at temperatures ~ 523-578 K by keV Xe ions even when less than a bilayer (monolayer) of surface material is removed.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Physical Review

    The utility of serology for elimination surveillance of trachoma

    Robust surveillance methods are needed for trachoma control and recrudescence monitoring, but existing methods have limitations. Here, we analyse data from nine trachoma-endemic populations and provide operational thresholds for interpretation of serological data in low-transmission and post-elimination settings. Analyses with sero-catalytic and antibody acquisition models provide insights into transmission history within each population. To accurately estimate sero-conversion rates (SCR) for trachoma in populations with high-seroprevalence in adults, the model accounts for secondary exposure to Chlamydia trachomatis due to urogenital infection. We estimate the population half-life of sero-reversion for anti-Pgp3 antibodies to be 26 (95% credible interval (CrI): 21–34) years. We show SCRs below 0.015 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.0–0.049) per year correspond to a prevalence of trachomatous inflammation—follicular below 5%, the current threshold for elimination of active trachoma as a public health problem. As global trachoma prevalence declines, we may need cross-sectional serological survey data to inform programmatic decisions

    Negotiated matter: a robotic exploration of craft-driven innovation

    This paper introduces a novel approach to craft-driven robotic innovation in architectural research. Here craft is not portrayed as a source of ornamental or historical inspiration, but instead as an open-ended process described by a framework involving material properties, diverging modes of knowledge production and representation, emergent tectonic configurations and embodied interaction with technology. To do so, this paper firstly contrasts a definition of craft (Pye 1968) with practices of robotic architectural production. Additionally, the notion of emergent tectonics resulting from negotiated material and technological processes is addressed by critically situating the theories of architectural tectonics by Kenneth Frampton (2001) and digital tectonics by Leach, Turnbull and Williams (2004) in the context of robotic fabrication in architecture. Finally, the ongoing project “Computing Craft” is presented as a case study illustrating a proposed framework for robotic craft-driven innovation

    The locations of cytochrome c peroxidase and catalase activities in the two Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas stutzeri (N.C.I.B. 9721) and Paracoccus denitrificans (N.C.I.B. 8944) were investigated by the production of spheroplasts. In both species the cytochrome c peroxidase was predominantly periplasmic: 92% of total activity in Ps. stutzeri and 98% of nonmembrane-bound activity in Pa. denitrificans were found in this cellular compartment. In contrast, the catalase was mostly in the cytoplasmic fraction. Purification of the Pa. denitrificans cytochrome c peroxidase showed it to be the haem c-containing polypeptide of Mr 42,000 that has already been described by Bosma, Braster, Stouthamer & Van Versefeld [(1987) Eur. J. Biochem. 165, 665-670] but was not identified by them as a peroxidase. The visible-absorption spectra of the enzyme closely resemble those of cytochrome c peroxidase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa but the donor specificity is different, with the Pa. denitrificans enzyme preferring the basic mitochondrial cytochromes c to the acidic cytochromes c-551 and reacting well with the Pa. denitrificans cytochrome c-550

    Learning that cannot come from a book: An evaluation of an undergraduate alcohol and other drugs subject co-produced with experts by experience.

    Alcohol and other drugs (AOD) use is a significant public health issue and is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. Despite this, people who use drugs are often reluctant to seek care due to the lack of trauma-informed treatment and harm reduction treatment options, as well as experiences of stigma and discrimination in health services. Arguably, AOD education that is co-produced with people who use alcohol and drugs can enhance future health professionals' ability to practice in ways that support the needs of this population. This paper reports on a qualitative co-evaluation of a co-produced undergraduate nursing AOD subject. The AOD subject was co-planned, co-designed, co-delivered, and co-evaluated with experts by experience, who have a lived experience of substance dependence and work as advocates and peer workers. Following the delivery of the subject in 2021 and 2022, focus groups were undertaken with 12 nursing students. Focus group data indicate that the co-produced subject supported participants to understand and appreciate how stigma impacts on nursing care and how to recognize and undertake 'good' nursing care that was oriented to the needs of service users. Student participants noted that being co-taught by people who use drugs was particularly powerful for shifting their nursing perspectives on AOD use and nursing care and took learning beyond what could be understood from a book. Findings indicate that co-produced AOD education can shift nursing students' perceptions of AOD use by providing access to tacit knowledge and embodied equitable and collaborative relationships with people who use drugs
