Mechanism of pulse magneto-oscillation grain refinement on pure Al

    Get PDF
Pulse magneto-oscillation (PMO) was developed as a novel technique to refine the solidification structure of pure aluminium. Its grain refining mechanism was proposed. The PMO refinement mechanism is that the nucleus falls off from the mould wall and drifts into the melt under the action of PMO. The solidification structure of Al melt depends on the linear electric current density, and also the discharge and oscillation frequencies. The radial pressure of PMO sound wave is the major factor that contributes to the migration of nucleus into the melt

Genome-Wide Identification and Salt Stress Response Analysis of the bZIP Transcription Factor Family in Sugar Beet

As one of the largest transcription factor families in plants, bZIP transcription factors play important regulatory roles in different biological processes, especially in the process of stress response. Salt stress inhibits the growth and yield of sugar beet. However, bZIP-related studies in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) have not been reported. This study aimed to identify the bZIP transcription factors in sugar beet and analyze their biological functions and response patterns to salt stress. Using bioinformatics, 48 BvbZIP genes were identified in the genome of sugar beet, encoding 77 proteins with large structural differences. Collinearity analysis showed that three pairs of BvbZIP genes were fragment replication genes. The BvbZIP genes were grouped according to the phylogenetic tree topology and conserved structures, and the results are consistent with those reported in Arabidopsis. Under salt stress, the expression levels of most BvbZIP genes were decreased, and only eight genes were up-regulated. GO analysis showed that the BvbZIP genes were mainly negatively regulated in stress response. Protein interaction prediction showed that the BvbZIP genes were mainly involved in light signaling and ABA signal transduction, and also played a certain role in stress responses. In this study, the structures and biological functions of the BvbZIP genes were analyzed to provide foundational data for further mechanistic studies and for facilitating the efforts toward the molecular breeding of stress-resilient sugar beet

Beijing is located on multiple alluvial-pluvial fans with thick Quaternary unconsolidated sediments. It has suffered serious groundwater drawdown and land subsidence due to groundwater exploitation. This study aimed to introduce geographical distribution measure methods into land subsidence research characterizing, geographically, land subsidence, groundwater drawdown, and compressible layer thickness. Therefore, we used gravity center analysis and standard deviational ellipse (SDE) methods in GIS to statistically analyze their concentration tendency, principle orientation, dispersion trend, and distribution differences in 1995 (1999), 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013. Results show that they were all concentrated in Chaoyang District of Urban Beijing. The concentration trend of land subsidence was consistent with that of groundwater drawdown. The principle orientation of land subsidence was SW–NE, which was more similar with that of the static spatial distribution of the compressible layer. The dispersion tendency of land subsidence got closer to that of the compressible layer with its increasing intensity. The spatial distribution difference between land subsidence and groundwater drawdown was about 0.2, and that between land subsidence and compressible layer thickness it decreased from 0.22 to 0.07, reflecting that the spatial distribution pattern of land subsidence was increasingly close to that of the compressible layer. Results of this study are useful for assessing the distribution of land subsidence development and managing groundwater resources

A Reliable Fracture Angle Determination Algorithm for Extended Puck’s 3D Inter-Fiber Failure Criterion for Unidirectional Composites

Determination of the fracture angle and maximum exposure value of extended Puck’s 3D inter-fiber failure (IFF) criterion is of great importance for predicting the failure mechanism of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites. In this paper, a reliable semi-analytical algorithm (RSAA) is presented for searching fracture angle and corresponding exposure value for the extended Puck’s failure criterion. One hundred million cases are tested for verifying the accuracy of the present and other algorithms on Python using the strength-value-stress-state combinations more universal than those in previous literatures. The reliability of previous algorithms is discussed and counterexamples are provided for illustration. The statistical results show RSAA is adequate for implementation in extended Puck’s criterion and much more reliable than previous algorithms. RSAA can correctly predict the results with a probability of over 99.999%

Comparative Study on the Grain Refinement of Al-Si Alloy Solidified under the Impact of Pulsed Electric Current and Travelling Magnetic Field

It is high of commercial importance to generate the grain refinement in alloys during solidification by means of electromagnetic fields. Two typical patterns of electromagnetic fields, pulsed electric currents (ECP) and traveling magnetic field (TMF), are frequently employed to produce the finer equiaxed grains in solidifying alloys. Various mechanisms were proposed to understand the grain refinement in alloys caused by ECP and TMF. In this paper, a comparative study is carried out in the same solidification regime to investigate the grain refinement of Al-7 wt. %Si alloy driven by ECP and TMF. Experimental results show that the application of ECP or TMF can cause the same grain refinement occurrence period, during which the refinement of primary Al continuously occurs. In addition, the related grain refinement mechanisms are reviewed and discussed, which shows the most likely one caused by ECP and TMF is the promoted dendrite fragmentation as the result of the ECP-induced or TMF-induced forced flow. It suggests that the same grain refinement process in alloys is provoked when ECP and TMF are applied in the same solidification regime, respectively

A genome-wide gene-environment interaction analysis for tobacco smoke and lung cancer susceptibility

Tobacco smoke is the major environmental risk factor underlying lung carcinogenesis. However, approximately one-tenth smokers develop lung cancer in their lifetime indicating there is significant individual variation in susceptibility to lung cancer. And, the reasons for this are largely unknown. In particular, the genetic variants discovered in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) account for only a small fraction of the phenotypic variations for lung cancer, and gene-environment interactions are thought to explain the missing fraction of disease heritability. The ability to identify smokers at high risk of developing cancer has substantial preventive implications. Thus, we undertook a gene-smoking interaction analysis in a GWAS of lung cancer in Han Chinese population using a two-phase designed case-control study. In the discovery phase, we evaluated all pair-wise (591 370) gene-smoking interactions in 5408 subjects (2331 cases and 3077 controls) using a logistic regression model with covariate adjustment. In the replication phase, promising interactions were validated in an independent population of 3023 subjects (1534 cases and 1489 controls). We identified interactions between two single nucleotide polymorphisms and smoking. The interaction P values are 6.73 × 10 −6 and 3.84 × 10 −6 for rs1316298 and rs4589502, respectively, in the combined dataset from the two phases. An antagonistic interaction (rs1316298-smoking) and a synergetic interaction (rs4589502-smoking) were observed. The two interactions identified in our study may help explain some of the missing heritability in lung cancer susceptibility and present strong evidence for further study of these gene-smoking interactions, which are benefit to intensive screening and smoking cessation interventions
