Detecting the Transverse Proximity Effect: Radiative Feedback from QSOs
We present results of a search for absorbers close to QSOs near the line of sight of background quasars based on sensitive Keck/HIRES observations of the QSO triplet KP76, KP77, and KP78 (z=2.466, 2.535, and 2.615), with separations of 2-3 arcmin on the plane plane of the sky. Through the use of a high resolution spectra, together with accurate systemic redshifts of the QSOs using near-IR spectroscopy, we quantify the state of the IGM gas at the redshifts of the foreground QSOs. The inferred ionizing flux at the proper transverse distances probed is up to 100 times greater than the UV background. We show that the state of the gas has been significantly affected by the UV radiation from the foreground QSOs
Polytropic equation of state and primordial quantum fluctuations
We study the primordial Universe in a cosmological model where inflation is
driven by a fluid with a polytropic equation of state . We calculate the dynamics of the scalar factor and build a
Universe with constant density at the origin. We also find the equivalent
scalar field that could create such equation of state and calculate the
corresponding slow-roll parameters. We calculate the scalar perturbations, the

No-horizon theorem for spacetimes with spacelike G1 isometry groups
We consider four-dimensional spacetimes which obey the
Einstein equations , and admit a global spacelike
isometry group. By means of dimensional reduction and local
analyis on the reduced (2+1) spacetime, we obtain a sufficient condition on
which guarantees that cannot contain apparent
horizons. Given any (3+1) spacetime with spacelike translational isometry, the
no-horizon condition can be readily tested without the need for dimensional
reduction. This provides thus a useful and encompassing apparent horizon test
for -symmetric spacetimes. We argue that this adds further evidence
towards the validity of the hoop conjecture, and signals possible violations of

A note on the cylindrical collapse of counter-rotating dust
We find analytical solutions describing the collapse of an infinitely long
cylindrical shell of counter-rotating dust. We show that--for the classes of
solutions discussed herein--from regular initial data a curvature singularity
inevitably develops, and no apparent horizons form, thus in accord with the

Analgesia e Anestesia Obstétricas na Maternidade do Hospital D. Estefânia: Estudo Retrospectivo
Resumo: Por intermédio deste estudo, pretendeu-se verificar qual a realidade em termos de analgesia e anestesia obstétricas na Maternidade do Hospital D. Estefânia,
ao longo de 4 anos. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo no período entre Janeiro de 2005 e Dezembro de 2008. Foram avaliados a classificação ASA das parturientes, o número total de partos, o número de parturientes submetidas a técnicas locorregionais e suas complicações, número de cesarianas e a necessidade de conversão de técnica regional para anestesia geral.
No período do estudo, houve um total de 8291 partos, maioritariamente em mulheres ASA I, dos quais 2643 foram cesarianas. A maioria das parturientes (77%) foi submetida
a uma técnica locorregional, para analgesia de trabalho de parto ou anestesia para cesariana, com baixa taxa de complicações (2,9%) e com rara necessidade de
conversão para anestesia geral (3,5%).
As autoras concluiram que, na Maternidade do Hospital D. Estefânia, a epidural continua a ser a técnica gold standard para analgesia do trabalho de parto, com raras complicações e permitindo a fácil conversão para anestesia para cesariana
Strong curvature singularities in quasispherical asymptotically de Sitter dust collapse
We study the occurrence, visibility, and curvature strength of singularities
in dust-containing Szekeres spacetimes (which possess no Killing vectors) with
a positive cosmological constant. We find that such singularities can be
locally naked, Tipler strong, and develop from a non-zero-measure set of
regular initial data. When examined along timelike geodesics, the singularity's
