Diffeomorphism, kappa transformations and the theory of non-linear realisations
We will show how the theory of non-linear realisations can be used to
naturally incorporate world line diffeomorphisms and kappa transformations for
the point particle and superpoint particle respectively. Similar results also
hold for a general p-brane and super p-brane, however, we must in these cases
include an additional Lorentz transformation.Comment: 19pages, no figure. References are added and typos are correcte
BPS Bounds for Worldvolume Branes
The worldvolume field equations of M-branes and D-branes are known to admit
p-brane soliton solutions. These solitons are shown to saturate a BPS-type
bound on their p-volume tensions, which are expressed in terms of central
charges that are expected to appear in the worldvolume supertranslation
algebra. The cases we consider include vortices, `BIons', instantons and dyons
(both abelian and non-abelian), and the string boundaries of M-2-branes in the
M-5-brane.Comment: Latex, 20 pages. References added, minor change
Space-Time Uncertainty and Noncommutativity in String Theory
We analyze the nature of space-time nonlocality in string theory. After
giving a brief overview on the conjecture of the space-time uncertainty
principle, a (semi-classical) reformulation of string quantum mechanics, in
which the dynamics is represented by the noncommutativity between temporal and
spatial coordinates, is outlined. The formalism is then compared to the
space-time noncommutative field theories associated with nonzero electric
B-fields.Comment: 10 pages with one figure. Written version of talks presented at the

Spinors for Spinning p-Branes
The group of the p-brane world volume preserving diffeomorphism is
considered. The infinite-dimensional spinors of this group are related, by the
nonlinear realization techniques, to the corresponding spinors of its linear
subgroup, that are constructed explicitly. An algebraic construction of the
Virasoro and Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond algebras, based on this infinite-dimensional
spinors and tensors, is demonstrated.Comment: 18 page
Holographic Gauge Theories in Background Fields and Surface Operators
We construct a new class of supersymmetric surface operators in N=4 SYM and
find the corresponding dual supergravity solutions. We show that the insertion
of the surface operator - which is given by a WZW model supported on the
surface - appears by integrating out the localized degrees of freedom along the
surface which arise microscopically from a D3/D7 brane intersection.
Consistency requires constructing N=4 SYM in the D7 supergravity background and
not in flat space. This enlarges the class of holographic gauge theories dual
to string theory backgrounds to gauge theories in non-trivial supergravity
backgrounds. The dual Type IIB supergravity solutions we find reveal - among
other features - that the holographic dual gauge theory does indeed live in the
D7-brane background.Comment: 42 pages, harvmac, corrected typo
No UV/IR Mixing in Unitary Space-Time Noncommutative Field Theory
In this article we calculate several divergent amplitudes in phi^4-theory on
non-commutative space-time in the framework of Interaction Point Time Ordered
Perturbation Theory (IPTOPT), continuing work done in hep-th/0209253. On the
ground of these results we find corresponding Feynman rules which allow for a
much easier diagrammatic calculation of amplitudes. The most important feature
of the present theory is the lack of the UV/IR mixing problem in all amplitudes
calculated so far. Although we are not yet able to give a rigorous proof, we
provide a strong argument for this result to hold in general. Together with the
found Feynman rules this opens promising vistas towards the systematic
renormalization of non-commutative field theories.Comment: 23 pages, uses package feynmf, v2: typos, added reference, minor

Aspects of U-duality in BLG models with Lorentzian metric 3-algebras
In our previous paper, it was shown that BLG model based on a Lorentzian
metric 3-algebra gives Dp-brane action whose worldvolume is compactified on
torus T^d (d=p-2). Here the 3-algebra was a generalized one with d+1 pairs of
Lorentzian metric generators and expressed in terms of a loop algebra with
central extensions. In this paper, we derive the precise relation between the
coupling constant of the super Yang-Mills, the moduli of T^d and some R-R flux
with VEV's of ghost fields associated with Lorentzian metric generators. In
particular, for d=1, we derive the Yang-Mills action with theta term and show
that SL(2,Z) Montonen-Olive duality is realized as the rotation of two VEV's.
Furthermore, some moduli parameters such as NS-NS 2-form flux are identified as
the deformation parameters of the 3-algebras. By combining them, we recover
most of the moduli parameters which are required by U-duality symmetry.Comment: 27 pages, v2: minor correction
