Workers without Rights
In the United States the Civil Rights Movement emerging after World War II ended Jim Crow racism, with its legal segregation and stigmatization of black people. Yet black people, both in chattel slavery and under Jim Crow, had provided abundant labor subject to racist terror; they were workers who could be recruited for work others were unwilling to do. What was to replace this labor, which had been the source of so much wealth and power? Three federal initiatives helped to create new workers without rights: the welfare reform law of 1996 and the changes in immigration and crime law and policy both starting in the mid-1960s. These changes re-created vulnerable labor, disproportionately marked and stigmatized as black or Mexican. These workers create a central strength of U.S. imperialism: cheap food. Because workers without rights have an important function in a capitalist economy, a society where all workers can flourish is not capitalist but communist
Dilemmas of Rawlsian Opportunity
John Rawls's repeated assertions that the basic structure of society creates profound and inevitable differences in life prospects for people born in different starting places seems to contradict his assertions that, under fair equality of opportunity, a person's life prospects would not be affected by class of origin for those similarly endowed and motivated. This seeming contradiction seems to be resolved by Rawls's apparent belief that class of origin inevitably affects motivation. This reconciliation leaves us with a very weak conception of "fair equality of opportunity." Should Rawls have advocated something stronger? Within the constraints of his theory of justice nothing stronger seems possible. Still, his theory harbors highly implausible sociological assumptions. A more plausible sociology requires us to reject distributive justice in favor of contributive justice
Why Distributive Justice Is Impossible but Contributive Justice Would Work
Distributive justice, defined as justice in distribution of income and wealth, is impossible. Income and wealth are distributed either unequally or equally. If unequally, then those with less are unjustly subject to social contempt. But equal distribution is impossible because it is inconsistent with bargaining to advance our own good. Hence justice in distribution of income and wealth is impossible.
More generally, societies where social relations are mediated by money are necessarily unjust, and Marx was wrong to think a socialist society which retained money would lead to communism. Contributive justice proposes that each flourishes by advancing the flourishing of others. To achieve this goal all labor, both simple and complex, must be shared among all capable of doing it. The good of contributing our abilities to benefit others is then available to all non-competitively
Earthquake Arrival Association with Backprojection and Graph Theory
The association of seismic wave arrivals with causative earthquakes becomes
progressively more challenging as arrival detection methods become more
sensitive, and particularly when earthquake rates are high. For instance,
seismic waves arriving across a monitoring network from several sources may
overlap in time, false arrivals may be detected, and some arrivals may be of
unknown phase (e.g., P- or S-waves). We propose an automated method to
associate arrivals with earthquake sources and obtain source locations
applicable to such situations. To do so we use a pattern detection metric based
on the principle of backprojection to reveal candidate sources, followed by
graph-theory-based clustering and an integer linear optimization routine to
associate arrivals with the minimum number of sources necessary to explain the
data. This method solves for all sources and phase assignments simultaneously,
rather than in a sequential greedy procedure as is common in other association
routines. We demonstrate our method on both synthetic and real data from the
Integrated Plate Boundary Observatory Chile (IPOC) seismic network of northern
Chile. For the synthetic tests we report results for cases with varying
complexity, including rates of 500 earthquakes/day and 500 false
arrivals/station/day, for which we measure true positive detection accuracy of
> 95%. For the real data we develop a new catalog between January 1, 2010 -
December 31, 2017 containing 817,548 earthquakes, with detection rates on
average 279 earthquakes/day, and a magnitude-of-completion of ~M1.8. A subset
of detections are identified as sources related to quarry and industrial site
activity, and we also detect thousands of foreshocks and aftershocks of the
April 1, 2014 Mw 8.2 Iquique earthquake. During the highest rates of aftershock
activity, > 600 earthquakes/day are detected in the vicinity of the Iquique
earthquake rupture zone
Slip Triggered on Southern California Faults by the 1992 Joshua Tree, Landers, and Big Bear Earthquakes
Five out of six functioning creepmeters on southern California faults recorded slip triggered at the time of some or all of the three largest events of the 1992 Landers earthquake sequence. Digital creep data indicate that dextral slip was triggered within 1 min of each mainshock and that maximum slip velocities occurred 2 to 3 min later. The duration of triggered slip events ranged from a few hours to several weeks. We note that triggered slip occurs commonly on faults that exhibit fault creep. To account for the observation that slip can be triggered repeatedly on a fault, we propose that the amplitude of triggered slip may be proportional to the depth of slip in the creep event and to the available near-surface tectonic strain that would otherwise eventually be released as fault creep. We advance the notion that seismic surface waves, perhaps amplified by sediments, generate transient local conditions that favor the release of tectonic strain to varying depths. Synthetic strain seismograms are presented that suggest increased pore pressure during periods of fault-normal contraction may be responsible for triggered slip, since maximum dextral shear strain transients correspond to times of maximum fault-normal contraction
Are megaquakes clustered?
We study statistical properties of the number of large earthquakes over the
past century. We analyze the cumulative distribution of the number of
earthquakes with magnitude larger than threshold M in time interval T, and
quantify the statistical significance of these results by simulating a large
number of synthetic random catalogs. We find that in general, the earthquake
record cannot be distinguished from a process that is random in time. This
conclusion holds whether aftershocks are removed or not, except at magnitudes
below M = 7.3. At long time intervals (T = 2-5 years), we find that
statistically significant clustering is present in the catalog for lower
magnitude thresholds (M = 7-7.2). However, this clustering is due to a large
number of earthquakes on record in the early part of the 20th century, when
magnitudes are less certain.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Abortion and the Morality of Nurturance
Most discussion of the morality of abortion assume the central issue is whether the fetus is a person. I disagree. The central issue is better understood as whether the fetus is one's *baby* whom one has a duty to nurture (babies need not be persons). Understanding the central issue as centering on duties to nurture one's children allows us better to understand both liberal and conservative views about abortion
The Fallacy of Philanthropy
Global poverty, hunger, and lack of access to save water raise problems of how to organize human society so that everyone's needs can be met. Philanthropic proposals, such as Peter Singer's and Peter Unger's, are based on a false analogy to duties of rescue and encourage philanthropic responses, thus closing the discourse to discussion of the causes and remedies of poverty. Radical criticism of capitalist social structures are put off the table, and this is a profound error
