Cyclic Statistics In Three Dimensions
While 2-dimensional quantum systems are known to exhibit non-permutation,
braid group statistics, it is widely expected that quantum statistics in
3-dimensions is solely determined by representations of the permutation group.
This expectation is false for certain 3-dimensional systems, as was shown by
the authors of ref. [1,2,3]. In this work we demonstrate the existence of
``cyclic'', or , {\it non-permutation group} statistics for a system of n
> 2 identical, unknotted rings embedded in . We make crucial use of a
theorem due to Goldsmith in conjunction with the so called Fuchs-Rabinovitch

Temperature perturbation model of the opto-galvanic effect in CO2-laser discharges
A detailed discharge model of the opto-galvanic effect in molecular laser gas mixtures is developed based on the temperature perturbation or discharge cooling mechanism of Smith and Brooks (1979). Excellent agreement between the model and experimental results in CO2 laser gas mixtures is obtained. The model should be applicable to other molecular systems where the OGE is being used for laser stabilisation and as a spectroscopic tool
A spectral line survey of Orion KL in the bands 486-492 and 541-577 GHz with the Odin satellite I. The observational data
Spectral line surveys are useful since they allow identification of new
molecules and new lines in uniformly calibrated data sets. Nonetheless, large
portions of the sub-millimetre spectral regime remain unexplored due to severe
absorptions by H2O and O2 in the terrestrial atmosphere. The purpose of the
measurements presented here is to cover wavelength regions at and around 0.55
mm -- regions largely unobservable from the ground. Using the Odin
astronomy/aeronomy satellite, we performed the first spectral survey of the
Orion KL molecular cloud core in the bands 486--492 and 541--576 GHz with
rather uniform sensitivity (22--25 mK baseline noise). Odin's 1.1 m size
telescope, equipped with four cryo-cooled tuneable mixers connected to broad
band spectrometers, was used in a satellite position-switching mode. Two mixers
simultaneously observed different 1.1 GHz bands using frequency steps of 0.5
GHz (25 hours each). An on-source integration time of 20 hours was achieved for
most bands. The entire campaign consumed ~1100 orbits, each containing one hour
of serviceable astro-observation. We identified 280 spectral lines from 38
known interstellar molecules (including isotopologues) having intensities in
the range 80 to 0.05 K. An additional 64 weak lines remain unidentified. Apart
from the ground state rotational 1(1,0)--1(0,1) transitions of ortho-H2O, H218O
and H217O, the high energy 6(2,4)--7(1,7) line of para-H2O and the
HDO(2,0,2--1,1,1) line have been observed, as well as the 1,0--0,1 lines from
NH3 and its rare isotopologue 15NH3. We suggest assignments for some
unidentified features, notably the new interstellar molecules ND and SH-.
Severe blends have been detected in the line wings of the H218O, H217O and 13CO

Genetic correlation of exercise with heart rate and respiratory sinus arrhythmia
Purpose: A twin design was used to test whether the association between exercise behavior and heart rate and the association between exercise behavior and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) derive from a common genetic factor. Methods: Data were available from 157 adolescent (aged 13-22) and 208 middle-aged twin pairs (aged 35-62), divided into five sex by zygosity groups (male and female monozygotic twin pairs, and dizygotic twin pairs of same or opposite sex). Exercise behavior was assessed as the average weekly METs spent on sports activities or other vigorous activities in leisure time (sportMETS) in the last 3 months. RSA and heart period (HP) were assessed in the time domain from the combined ECG and respiration signals. Results: Heritability estimates were 16% and 29% for RSA, 64% and 68% for HP, and 79% and 41% for sportMETS in young and middle-aged twins, respectively. A significant association was found between RSA and sportMETS (0.17) in the adolescent twins that derived entirely from a common genetic factor. No association was found between sportMETS and RSA in the older twins. A significant association was found between HP and sportMETS in both adolescent (0.35) and middle-aged (0.18) twins. A large contribution of common genetic factors to these associations was found amounting to 84% and 88% in the young and middle-aged twins, respectively. Conclusions: Although the results of this study do not preclude causal effects of exercise on RSA and heart rate, they show that the association between exercise and these cardiovascular risk factors largely derives from a common genetic factor
An optimized TOPS+ comparison method for enhanced TOPS models

Although methods based on highly abstract descriptions of protein structures, such as VAST and TOPS, can perform very fast protein structure comparison, the results can lack a high degree of biological significance. Previously we have discussed the basic mechanisms of our novel method for structure comparison based on our TOPS+ model (Topological descriptions of Protein Structures Enhanced with Ligand Information). In this paper we show how these results can be significantly improved using parameter optimization, and we call the resulting optimised TOPS+ method as advanced TOPS+ comparison method i.e. advTOPS+.
Results
We have developed a TOPS+ string model as an improvement to the TOPS [1-3] graph model by considering loops as secondary structure elements (SSEs) in addition to helices and strands, representing ligands as first class objects, and describing interactions between SSEs, and SSEs and ligands, by incoming and outgoing arcs, annotating SSEs with the interaction direction and type. Benchmarking results of an all-against-all pairwise comparison using a large dataset of 2,620 non-redundant structures from the PDB40 dataset [4] demonstrate the biological significance, in terms of SCOP classification at the superfamily level, of our TOPS+ comparison method.
Conclusions
Our advanced TOPS+ comparison shows better performance on the PDB40 dataset [4] compared to our basic TOPS+ method, giving 90 percent accuracy for SCOP alpha+beta; a 6 percent increase in accuracy compared to the TOPS and basic TOPS+ methods. It also outperforms the TOPS, basic TOPS+ and SSAP comparison methods on the Chew-Kedem dataset [5], achieving 98 percent accuracy.
