    Carbenicillin-induced coagulopathy

    In high dosage, carbenicillin may interfere with the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin and result in a haemorrhagic diathesis. The effect is dose-dependent and requires a high concentration of carbenicillin in plasma. Such a level may be attained in renal failure unless the dose of the drug is appropriately reduced. In such situations the screening coagulation tests may be prolonged and this should alert one to the development of a haemorrhagic diathesis due to the drug.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 457 (1974)

    Modelling fish habitat preference with a genetic algorithm-optimized Takagi-Sugeno model based on pairwise comparisons

    Species-environment relationships are used for evaluating the current status of target species and the potential impact of natural or anthropogenic changes of their habitat. Recent researches reported that the results are strongly affected by the quality of a data set used. The present study attempted to apply pairwise comparisons to modelling fish habitat preference with Takagi-Sugeno-type fuzzy habitat preference models (FHPMs) optimized by a genetic algorithm (GA). The model was compared with the result obtained from the FHPM optimized based on mean squared error (MSE). Three independent data sets were used for training and testing of these models. The FHPMs based on pairwise comparison produced variable habitat preference curves from 20 different initial conditions in the GA. This could be partially ascribed to the optimization process and the regulations assigned. This case study demonstrates applicability and limitations of pairwise comparison-based optimization in an FHPM. Future research should focus on a more flexible learning process to make a good use of the advantages of pairwise comparisons

    Quantum Langevin theory of excess noise

    In an earlier work [P. J. Bardroff and S. Stenholm], we have derived a fully quantum mechanical description of excess noise in strongly damped lasers. This theory is used here to derive the corresponding quantum Langevin equations. Taking the semi-classical limit of these we are able to regain the starting point of Siegman's treatment of excess noise [Phys. Rev. A 39, 1253 (1989)].     Evaluation of Hungarian Wines for Resveratrol by Overpressured Layer Chromatography

    A method, including solid phase extraction sample preparation, overpressured layer chromatographic separation and subsequent densitometric evaluation, was developed for measurement of total resveratrol (cis- and trans-isomers) content of wine. The amount of resveratrol was determined in wine samples from different winemaking regions of Hungary. The total resveratrol was high in Hungarian red wines (3.6–11 mg/L), and much lower in white ones (0.04–1.5 mg/L)

    Owing to the presence of the Coulomb barrier at astrophysically relevant kinetic energies it is very difficult, or sometimes impossible, to measure astrophysical reaction rates in the laboratory. That is why different indirect techniques are being used along with direct measurements. Here we address two important indirect techniques, the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) and the Trojan Horse (TH) methods. We discuss the application of the ANC technique for calculation of the astrophysical processes in the presence of subthreshold bound states, in particular, two different mechanisms are discussed: direct capture to the subthreshold state and capture to the low-lying bound states through the subthreshold state, which plays the role of the subthreshold resonance. The ANC technique can also be used to determine the interference sign of the resonant and nonresonant (direct) terms of the reaction amplitude. The TH method is unique indirect technique allowing one to measure astrophysical rearrangement reactions down to astrophysically relevant energies. We explain why there is no Coulomb barrier in the sub-process amplitudes extracted from the TH reaction.     Quantum statistics of overlapping modes in open resonators

    We study the quantum dynamics of optical fields in weakly confining resonators with overlapping modes. Employing a recently developed quantization scheme involving a discrete set of resonator modes and continua of external modes we derive Langevin equations and a master equation for the resonator modes. Langevin dynamics and the master equation are proved to be equivalent in the Markovian limit. Our open-resonator dynamics may be used as a starting point for a quantum theory of random lasers.Comment: 6 pages, corrected typo

    Molybdenum Geochemistry in Salt Marsh Pond Sediments

    The concentration and isotopic composition of sedimentary molybdenum (Mo) has been used to distinguish different redox environments in modern marine settings and in the geological record. We report Mo concentrations and ή98Mo from porewaters and sediments in three anoxic East Anglian salt marsh pond environments: (1) ‘iron-rich’ sediments containing high concentrations of dissolved ferrous iron (up to 2 mM), (2) ‘sulfide-rich’ sediments containing very high concentrations of aqueous sulfide (up to 10 mM) and, (3) sediments that we consider to be intermediate between ‘iron-rich’ and ‘sulfide-rich’ conditions. In iron-rich sediments, we suggest that iron speciation and mineralogy controls the concentration and isotopic composition of Mo. Despite similar aqueous sulfide profiles, the intermediate and sulfide-rich pond sediment have different porewater Mo concentrations and ή98Mo. In the sulfide-rich pond sediment, we suggest that the concentration and isotopic composition of Mo is controlled by solubility equilibrium with an Fe-Mo-S mineral species (e.g. FeMoS4) due to similarities in sediment and porewater ή98Mo throughout the sediment column. In the intermediate pond sediment, we conclude that active breakdown of iron oxides redistributes porewater Mo, observable as a peak of dissolved Mo (>100ppb), which diffuses within the sedimentary porewaters. The sedimentary ή98Mo is higher in sulfide-rich and intermediate pond sediment (mean = 1.66‰, range = 0.98–1.92‰) than in iron-rich pond sediment (mean = 1.10‰, range = 0.28–1.65‰) with all ponds having sedimentary ή98Mo that is lower than seawater. The maximum sedimentary ή98Mo observed in these anoxic sediments, which is 0.5-0.7‰ lower than seawater, appears to be set by Fe-Mo-S equilibration with ambient thiomolybdate species. We suggest diagenetic overprinting can cause more efficient capture of pond water Mo and causes sediment ή98Mo of originally iron-rich pond sediment to evolve to higher values at progressively higher aqueous sulfide concentrations

We use the generalized Landau-Lifshitz energy-momentum complex in the framework of metric f(R) gravity to evaluate the energy density of plane symmetric solutions for some general f(R) models. In particular, this quantity is found for some popular choices of f(R) models. The constant scalar curvature condition and the stability condition for these models are also discussed.     Spectroscopy of 18^{18}Na: Bridging the two-proton radioactivity of 19^{19}Mg

    The unbound nucleus 18^{18}Na, the intermediate nucleus in the two-proton radioactivity of 19^{19}Mg, was studied by the measurement of the resonant elastic scattering reaction 17^{17}Ne(p,17^{17}Ne)p performed at 4 A.MeV. Spectroscopic properties of the low-lying states were obtained in a R-matrix analysis of the excitation function. Using these new results, we show that the lifetime of the 19^{19}Mg radioactivity can be understood assuming a sequential emission of two protons via low energy tails of 18^{18}Na resonances

    A lower bound on the local extragalactic magnetic field

    Assuming that the hard gamma-ray emission of Cen A is a result of synchrotron radiation of ultra-relativistic electrons, we derive a lower bound on the local extragalactic magnetic field, B>10−8B> 10^{-8} G.
