    The interplay between the ground state energy of the generalized Bernasconi model to multi-phase, and the minimal value of the maximal autocorrelation function, Cmax=maxKCKC_{max}=\max_K{|C_K|}, K=1,..N1K=1,..N-1, is examined analytically and the main results are: (a) The minimal value of minNCmax\min_N{C_{max}} is 0.435N0.435\sqrt{N} significantly smaller than the typical value for random sequences O(logNN)O(\sqrt{\log{N}}\sqrt{N}). (b) minNCmax\min_N{C_{max}} over all sequences of length N is obtained in an energy which is about 30% above the ground-state energy of the generalized Bernasconi model, independent of the number of phases m. (c) The maximal merit factor FmaxF_{max} grows linearly with m. (d) For a given N, minNCmaxN/m\min_N{C_{max}}\sim\sqrt{N/m} indicating that for m=N, minNCmax=1\min_N{C_{max}}=1, i.e. a Barker code exits.     Dynamical Behaviour of Low Autocorrelation Models

    We have investigated the nature of the dynamical behaviour in low autocorrelation binary sequences. These models do have a glass transition TGT_G of a purely dynamical nature. Above the glass transition the dynamics is not fully ergodic and relaxation times diverge like a power law τ(TTG)γ\tau\sim (T-T_G)^{-\gamma} with γ\gamma close to 22. Approaching the glass transition the relaxation slows down in agreement with the first order nature of the dynamical transition. Below the glass transition the system exhibits aging phenomena like in disordered spin glasses.     On the ground states of the Bernasconi model

    The ground states of the Bernasconi model are binary +1/-1 sequences of length N with low autocorrelations. We introduce the notion of perfect sequences, binary sequences with one-valued off-peak correlations of minimum amount. If they exist, they are ground states. Using results from the mathematical theory of cyclic difference sets, we specify all values of N for which perfect sequences do exist and how to construct them. For other values of N, we investigate almost perfect sequences, i.e. sequences with two-valued off-peak correlations of minimum amount. Numerical and analytical results support the conjecture that almost perfect sequences do exist for all values of N, but that they are not always ground states.     Landscape statistics of the low autocorrelated binary string problem

    The statistical properties of the energy landscape of the low autocorrelated binary string problem (LABSP) are studied numerically and compared with those of several classic disordered models. Using two global measures of landscape structure which have been introduced in the Simulated Annealing literature, namely, depth and difficulty, we find that the landscape of LABSP, except perhaps for a very large degeneracy of the local minima energies, is qualitatively similar to some well-known landscapes such as that of the mean-field 2-spin glass model. Furthermore, we consider a mean-field approximation to the pure model proposed by Bouchaud and Mezard (1994, J. Physique I France 4 1109) and show both analytically and numerically that it describes extremely well the statistical properties of LABSP

    Metastable States in High Order Short-Range Spin Glasses

    The mean number of metastable states in higher order short-range spin glasses is estimated analytically using a variational method introduced by Tanaka and Edwards for very large coordination numbers. For lattices with small connectivities, numerical simulations do not show any significant dependence on the relative positions of the interacting spins on the lattice, indicating thus that these systems can be described by a few macroscopic parameters. As an extremely anisotropic model we consider the low autocorrelated binary spin model and we show through numerical simulations that its landscape has an exceptionally large number of local optima

    Complement Activation Determines the Therapeutic Activity of Rituximab In Vivo

    Rituximab is an anti-CD20 chimeric mAb effective for the treatment of B-NHL. It can lyse lymphoma cells in vitro through both C- and Ab-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. The mechanism of action of rituximab in vivo is however still unclear. We have set up a new in vivo model in nonimmunodeficient mice by stable transduction of the human CD20 cDNA in the murine lymphoma line EL4. Animals injected i.v. with the EL4-CD20+ lymphoma cells died within 30 days with evident liver, spleen, and bone marrow involvement, confirmed by immunohistochemistry and PCR analysis. A single injection of rituximab or the murine anti-CD20 Ab 1F5, given i.p. 1 day after the tumor, cured 100% of the animals. Indeed, at week 4 after tumor cell inoculation, CD20+ cells were undetectable in all organs analyzed in rituximab-treated animals, as determined by immunohistochemistry and PCR. Rituximab had no direct effect on tumor growth in vitro. Depletion of either NK cells or neutrophils or both in tumor-injected animals did not affect the therapeutic activity of the drug. Similarly, rituximab was able to eradicate tumor cells in athymic nude mice, suggesting that its activity is T cell independent. In contrast, the protective activity of rituximab or the 1F5 Ab was completely abolished in syngeneic knockout animals lacking C1q, the first component of the classical pathway of C (C1qa−/−). These data demonstrate that C activation is fundamental for rituximab therapeutic activity in vivo

    Generation of unpredictable time series by a Neural Network

    A perceptron that learns the opposite of its own output is used to generate a time series. We analyse properties of the weight vector and the generated sequence, like the cycle length and the probability distribution of generated sequences. A remarkable suppression of the autocorrelation function is explained, and connections to the Bernasconi model are discussed.     Perspectives of Frequent Users of Emergency Departments on a Case Management Intervention: A Qualitative Study.

    Effective management of frequent users of emergency departments (FUED) remains challenging. Case management (CM) has shown to improve patient quality of life while reducing ED visits and associated costs. However, little data is available on FUED's perception of CM outside of North America to further improve CM implementation. Explore the FUED's perspectives about CM in Switzerland. Semi-structured qualitative interviews eliciting FUED's experiences of CM were conducted among 20 participants (75% female; mean age = 40.6, SD = 12.8) across 6 hospital ED. Inductive content analysis. Most participants were satisfied with the CM program. In particular, FUEDs identified the working relationship with the case manager (cm) as key for positive outcomes, and also valued the holistic evaluation of their needs and resources. Overall, patients reported increased motivation and health literacy, as well as facilitated interactions within the healthcare system. Conversely, a small number of participants reported negative views on CM (ie, stigmatization, lack of concrete outcomes). Barriers identified were cm's lack of time, COVID-19's negative impact on CM organization, as well as lack of clarity on the objectives of CM. FUED perceived CM as useful, in particular establishing a working relationship with the cm. Our results suggest that CM can be further improved by (1) professionals remaining non-judgmental toward FUED, (2) making sure the aims and objectives of the CM are understood by the participants, and (3) allowing more time for the cm to carry out their work

    The ALHAMBRA photometric system

    This paper presents the characterization of the optical range of the ALHAMBRA photometric system, a 20 contiguous, equal-width, medium-band CCD system with wavelength coverage from 3500A to 9700A. The photometric description of the system is done by presenting the full response curve as a product of the filters, CCD and atmospheric transmission curves, and using some first and second order moments of this response function. We also introduce the set of standard stars that defines the system, formed by 31 classic spectrophotometric standard stars which have been used in the calibration of other known photometric systems, and 288 stars, flux calibrated homogeneously, from the Next Generation Spectral Library (NGSL). Based on the NGSL, we determine the transformation equations between Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) ugriz photometry and the ALHAMBRA photometric system, in order to establish some relations between both systems. Finally we develop and discuss a strategy to calculate the photometric zero points of the different pointings in the ALHAMBRA project.Comment: Astronomical Journal on the 14th of January 201
