Urban villages strategy in Seattle. Implementation of smart growth

Artykuł porusza problematykę wdrażania nowych idei urbanistycznych w planowaniu i kształtowaniu struktury przestrzennej miasta. Przyjęta strategia tzw. urban village nawiązuje do zasad planistycznych ustanowionych na poziomie stanowym oraz regionalnym. W Seattle przez ustalenia planistyczne w tzw. comprehensive plan wdrażana jest strategia rozwoju urban villages – lokalnych ośrodków ogniskujących rozwój mieszkalnictwa, usług i miejsc pracy. Wyróżniono ich cztery rodzaje – urban centers, hub urban villages, residential urban villages i manufacturing/industrial centers. Każde z nich różni się stopniem wielofunkcyjności i liczbą nowo wybudowanych obiektów mieszkaniowych i usługowych w stosunku do nowych miejsc pracy. Ustalono także standardy projektowania, które zostały zróżnicowane na trzy kategorie: środowisko naturalne, obszary zabudowane i przestrzeń publiczna.The paper points out the issue of implementation of the new urban design ideas in creating structural urban pattern of cities. Seattle urban village strategy is related to the state and county goals for urban growth. City of Seattle establishes smart growth strategy through comprehensive plan of urban centers/villages, which are the centers focusing on housing, facilities and new jobs development. In Seattle there are four types of centers distinguished: urban centers, hub urban villages, residential urban villages and manufacturing/ industrial centers. Mulitifunctional level of housing, jobs and facilities is a main topic of differentation. It has established also standards for urban design, divided into three categories: natural environment, built environment and public space
