This technical study consists of an operational analysis of two direct fired heaters in order to identify possible factors impacting their efficiency. Furthermore, possible improvements were raised based on articles and academic information related to these machines in order to increase their efficiency and decrease their gas consumption. Two sources of information were used: the academic one and the data provided by the company. Then, they were filtered to choose the most important of them and raise the alternatives. Three factors that impact the efficiency were identified; wear of the thermal isolation and/or their walls, the temperature and the flux of the air that is used in the system. Based on the filtered information, three alternatives were raised: check and fix the thermal isolation, adjust the air flux and install a pre-heating system to increase the temperature of the air. Subsequently, a simulation of the process was made on Aspen HYSYS ® to analyze the impact of the alternatives on the efficiency. Finally, evidence of the impact on gas consumption was obtained. The first alternative could save between 27,103.44/yand27,103.44/y and 51,309.07/y, the second between 56,856.52and56,856.52 and 73,049.23/y and the third one between 20,899.59/yand20,899.59/y and 71,064.14/

BACKGROUND: Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) is a traumatic lesion commonly found secondary to traumatic brain injury. Radiological findings on CT, such as hematoma thickness (HT) and structures midline shift (MLS), have an important prognostic role in this disease. The relationship between HT and MLS has been rarely studied in the literature. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prognostic accuracy of the difference between MLS and HT for acute outcomes in patients with ASDH in a low-income to middle-income country. METHODS: This was a post-hoc analysis of a prospective cohort study conducted in a university-associated tertiary-level hospital in Brazil. The TRIPOD (Transparent Reporting of a multivariable prediction model for Individual Prognosis or Diagnosis) statement guidelines were followed. The difference values between MLS and HT (Zumkeller index, ZI) were divided into three categories (3). Logistic regression analyses were performed to reveal the OR of categorized ZI in predicting primary outcome measures. A Cox regression was also performed and the results were presented through HR. The discriminative ability of three multivariate models including clinical and radiological variables (ZI, Rotterdam score, and Helsinki score) was demonstrated. RESULTS: A total of 114 patients were included. Logistic regression demonstrated an OR value equal to 8.12 for the ZI >3 category (OR 8.12, 95% CI 1.16 to 40.01; p=0.01), which proved to be an independent predictor of mortality in the adjusted model for surgical intervention, age, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score. Cox regression analysis demonstrated that this category was associated with 14-day survival (HR 2.92, 95% CI 1.38 to 6.16; p=0.005). A multivariate analysis performed for three models including age and GCS with categorized ZI or Helsinki or Rotterdam score demonstrated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.745, 0.767, and 0.808, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The present study highlights the potential usefulness of the difference between MLS and HT as a prognostic variable in patients with ASDH. A Dynamic Interplay of Circulating Extracellular Vesicles and Galectin-1 Reprograms Viral Latency during HIV-1 Infection

Combined Antiretroviral therapy (cART) suppresses HIV replication but fails to eradicate the virus, which persists in a small pool of long-lived latently infected cells. Immune activation and residual inflammation during cART are considered to contribute to viral persistence. Galectins, a family of b-galactoside-binding proteins, play central roles in host-pathogen interactions and inflammatory responses. Depending on their structure, glycan binding specificities and/or formation of distinct multivalent signaling complexes, different members of this family can complement, synergize, or oppose the function of others. Here, we identify a regulatory circuit, mediated by galectin-1 (Gal-1)–glycan interactions, that promotes reversal of HIV-1 latency in infected T cells. We found elevated levels of circulating Gal-1 in plasma from HIV-1-infected individuals, which correlated both with inflammatory markers and the transcriptional activity of the reservoir, as determined by unspliced-RNA (US-RNA) copy number. Proinflammatory extracellular vesicles (EVs) isolated from the plasma of HIV-infected individuals induced Gal-1 secretion by macrophages. Extracellularly, Gal-1 interacted with latently infected resting primary CD41 T cells and J-LAT cells in a glycan-dependent manner and reversed HIV latency via activation of the nuclear factor kB (NF-kB). Furthermore, CD41 T cells isolated from HIV-infected individuals showed increased HIV-1 transcriptional activity when exposed to Gal-1. Thus, by modulating reservoir dynamics, EV-driven Gal-1 secretion by macrophages links inflammation with HIV-1 persistence in cART-treated individuals. IMPORTANCE Antiretroviral therapy has led to a dramatic reduction in HIV-related morbidity and mortality. However, cART does not eradicate the virus, which persists in resting CD41 T cells as the main viral reservoir, consequently requiring lifelong treatment. A major question is how the functional status of the immune system during antiretroviral therapy determines the activity and size of the viral reservoir. In this study, we identified a central role for galectin-1 (Gal-1), a glycan-binding protein released in response to extracellular vesicles (EVs), in modulating the activity of HIV reservoir, thus shaping chronic immune activation in HIV-infected patients. Our work unveils a central role of Gal-1 in linking chronic immune activation and reservoir dynamics, highlighting new therapeutic opportunities in HIV infection.Fil: Rubione, Julia. Get PDF
This edited volume offers a collection of twelve interlinear texts reflecting the vast linguistic diversity of Amazonia as well as the rich verbal arts and oral literature traditions of Amazonian peoples. Contributions to the volume come from a variety of geographic regions and represent the Carib, Jê, Tupi, East Tukano, Nadahup, and Pano language families, as well as three linguistic isolates. The selected texts exemplify a variety of narrative styles recounting the origins of constellations, crops, and sacred cemeteries, and of travel to worlds beyond death. We hear tales of tricksters and of encounters between humans and other beings, learn of battles between enemies, and gain insight into history and the indigenous perspective of creation, cordiality and confrontation. The contributions to this volume are the result of research efforts conducted since 2000, and as such, exemplify rapidly expanding investment and interest in documenting native Amazonian voices. They moreover demonstrate the collaborative efforts of linguists, anthropologists, and indigenous leaders, storytellers, and researchers to study and preserve Amazonian languages and cultures. Each chapter offers complete interlinear analysis as well as ample commentary on both linguistic and cultural aspects, appealing to a wide audience, including linguists, historians, anthropologists, and other social scientists. This collection is the first of its type, constituting a significant contribution to focused study of Amazonian linguistic diversity and a relevant addition to our broader knowledge of Amerindian languages and cosmologies
