Evolution and Engagement in SoTL: Today, Tomorrow, and Internationally

    Get PDF
This article presents a revision and extension of remarks made by the authors as part of a plenary panel at the 2010 SoTL Commons Conference at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia (USA) on the current and future state of SoTL both in their respective countries (New Zealand, Israel, Denmark, the United States, and Trinidad & Tobago) and internationally. We devote special attention to issues and themes that are common across our countries and other

Can the Mechanism for π1ηπ,ηπ\pi_1\to \eta\pi,\eta'\pi Hybrid Decays be Detected?

Two mechanisms for the π1\pi_1 (JPC=1+J^{PC}=1^{-+}) hybrid meson decay processes π1ηπ,ηπ\pi_1\to\eta\pi,\eta'\pi are investigated. These mechanisms are applied to ϕηγ,ηγ\phi\to\eta\gamma,\eta'\gamma and J/ψηγ,ηγJ/\psi\to\eta\gamma,\eta'\gamma decays to illustrate the validity of the decay mechanisms and to obtain independent information on the coupling of η,η\eta,\eta' to quark and gluonic operators. From this information, we find that Γ(π1ηπ)/Γ(π1ηπ)\Gamma(\pi_1\to\eta\pi)/\Gamma(\pi_1\to\eta'\pi) is substantially different in the two decay mechanisms, and hence future experimental measurements of this ratio will provide valuable information for substantiating the hybrid nature of these states and for determining the mechanism for these hybrid decays.Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 1 eps figure embedded in manuscript. A Review of Accelerometry-Based Wearable Motion Detectors for Physical Activity Monitoring

    Get PDF
Characteristics of physical activity are indicative of one’s mobility level, latent chronic diseases and aging process. Accelerometers have been widely accepted as useful and practical sensors for wearable devices to measure and assess physical activity. This paper reviews the development of wearable accelerometry-based motion detectors. The principle of accelerometry measurement, sensor properties and sensor placements are first introduced. Various research using accelerometry-based wearable motion detectors for physical activity monitoring and assessment, including posture and movement classification, estimation of energy expenditure, fall detection and balance control evaluation, are also reviewed. Finally this paper reviews and compares existing commercial products to provide a comprehensive outlook of current development status and possible emerging technologies

Discovery of very high energy gamma rays from PKS 1424+240 and multiwavelength constraints on its redshift

We report the first detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission above 140 GeV from PKS 1424+240, a BL Lac object with an unknown redshift. The photon spectrum above 140 GeV measured by VERITAS is well described by a power law with a photon index of 3.8 +- 0.5_stat +- 0.3_syst and a flux normalization at 200 GeV of (5.1 +- 0.9_stat +- 0.5_syst) x 10^{-11} TeV^-1 cm^-2 s^-1, where stat and syst denote the statistical and systematical uncertainty, respectively. The VHE flux is steady over the observation period between MJD 54881 and 55003 (2009 February 19 to June 21). Flux variability is also not observed in contemporaneous high energy observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Contemporaneous X-ray and optical data were also obtained from the Swift XRT and MDM observatory, respectively. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) is well described by a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model favoring a redshift of less than 0.1. Using the photon index measured with Fermi in combination with recent extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption models it can be concluded from the VERITAS data that the redshift of PKS 1424+240 is less than 0.66.Comment: accepted for publication, Ap

Diffractive Dijet Production at sqrt(s)=630 and 1800 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron

We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function FjjDF_{jj}^D of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in pˉp\bar pp collisions at s=630\sqrt s=630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of FjjDF_{jj}^D at s=630\sqrt s=630 GeV to FjjDF_{jj}^D obtained from a similar measurement at s=1800\sqrt s=1800 GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and with theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the ξ\xi (xx-Pomeron) and β\beta (xx of parton in Pomeron) dependence of FjjDF_{jj}^D at s=1800\sqrt s=1800 GeV. In the region 0.035<ξ<0.0950.035<\xi<0.095, t<1|t|<1 GeV2^2 and β<0.5\beta<0.5, FjjD(β,ξ)F_{jj}^D(\beta,\xi) is found to be of the form β1.0±0.1ξ0.9±0.1\beta^{-1.0\pm 0.1} \xi^{-0.9\pm 0.1}, which obeys β\beta-ξ\xi factorization.Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, Submitted to Phys.
