    A Study on Intrusion Detection System in Wireless Sensor Networks

    The technology of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has become most significant in present day. WSNs are extensively used in applications like military, industry, health, smart homes and smart cities. All the applications of WSN require secure communication between the sensor nodes and the base station. Adversary compromises at the sensor nodes to introduce different attacks into WSN. Hence, suitable Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is essential in WSN to defend against the security attack. IDS approaches for WSN are classified based on the mechanism used to detect the attacks. In this paper, we present the taxonomy of security attacks, different IDS mechanisms for detecting attacks and performance metrics used to assess the IDS algorithm for WSNs. Future research directions on IDS in WSN are also discussed

    Vitamin D3 levels in healthy people, including a group aged over 60, in relation to BMI

    Vitamin D plays a role not only in the remodeling of bone, but also in functions involving other organs. Its tissue availability depends on dermal synthesis and/or ingestion from diet, as well as on the amount of adipose tissue binding vitamin D into its cells. This study evaluates vitamin D concentrations in relation to body-mass index (BMI) in healthy people aged over 60 and living in the Subcarpathian Province of southeastern Poland. The study involved 246 participants – 172 women (69.9%), 74 men (31.1%), with an average age of 6.9 (±11.9). The mean concentrations of vitamin D, assessed with ECLIA method, was 18 ng/ml, which indicates a marked deficiency in vitamin D. Defined vitamin D deficiency (<20ng/ml) was noted in 62% of participants without any difference between males and females. There was no correlation between BMI and vitamin D deficiency in the studied group. The results suggest the need for vitamin supplementation in healthy people aged over 60 according to the guidelines

Disability-related impairment of oral function contributes to a deterioration of the diet of older people and to the reduction of their social activity.Objectives: Investigate the association between masseter muscle tension, dental status, and physical fitness parameters.Materials and methods: Two hundred fifty-nine elderly care home residents (97&nbsp;men, 162&nbsp;women; mean age, 75.3&plusmn;8.9&nbsp;years) were involved in this cross-sectional study. Their chewing ability was evaluated by masseter muscle tension palpation, differences of masseter muscle thickness, self-reported chewing ability, number of present and functional teeth, and number of posterior tooth pairs. Masseter muscle thickness was measured by ultrasonography. To assess physical fitness, hand grip strength and the timed up-and-go test were performed. Nutritional status was assessed using body mass index and body cell mass index (BCMI), calculated on the basis of electrical bioimpedance measurements. Medical records were used to collect information on systemic diseases and the number of prescribed medications. Subjects were also evaluated for their ability to perform ten activities of daily living.Results: Ninety-seven percent of the subjects suffered from systemic diseases. The three most prevalent illnesses were cardiac/circulatory 64.5%, musculoskeletal 37.3%, and endocrine/metabolic/nutritional 29.3%. Of the participants, 1.5% were underweight and more than one third (34.4%) were overweight. Malnutrition (BCMI below normal) was found in almost half (45.2%) of the subjects. Only 5.8% had a sufficient number of functional natural teeth. Statistically significant correlations were found between palpation of masseter muscle tension and perceived chewing ability, number of present teeth, number of functional teeth, number of posterior tooth pairs, timed up-and-go, hand grip strength, body mass index, BCMI, and activities of daily living. In a multivariate model, after adjusting for age, sex, and education, subjects with higher BCMI, higher hand grip strength, and more present teeth had a significantly higher chance of strong masseter muscle tension.Conclusion: There is a relationship between chewing ability and physical fitness in elderly people. Efficiency of masseter muscles is related to physical fitness in the elderly. Masseter muscle tension examined by palpation can be used in public dentistry as one of the indicators of quality of life. Keywords: physical fitness, chewing ability, masseter muscle tensio

The oral examination was performed. In face-to-face interviews, subjects were asked about frequency of cleaning teeth and/or dentures, whether they needed assistance, and whether the assistance was available; they were also asked about the perceived dental needs, and about the time since their last visit to a dentist and the purpose of the visit. If they had not visited the dentist in the past 12 months, they were asked about reasons for failing to visit the dentist.Results: Forty-six percent of the subjects were edentulous. Only 5.8% of all participants had a sufficient number of functional natural teeth. Dental treatment was found to be necessary in 59.8% of the respondents. One in four subjects reported reduced ability of correctly cleaning teeth and dentures themselves, of whom only one-third were helped by others. An insufficient level of hygiene was found in every other subject. About 42% of residents had not visited a dentist for over 5 years, mainly due to organizational reasons.Conclusion: Expanding the current scope of medical care for the elderly care home residents to include dental care would improve their currently poor oral health status.     Role of Serum Interleukin-6, Interleukin-1β and Interleukin-10 in Assessment of Disease Activity and Nutritional Status in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

    Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are characterised by multifactorial and chronic inflammation. Much attention has been paid to immune dysfunction in inflammatory bowel diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of serum IL-6, IL-1β and IL-10 in determining the activity and nutritional status in IBD patients. The case–control study was carried out on 82 patients with IBD; the control group consisted of 25 clinically healthy subjects. The serum concentrations of IL-6, IL-1 β and IL-10 were determined by the quantitative sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. There were no significant differences in IL-6 and IL-1β levels in UC and CD patients according to disease activity as assessed by the Montreal classification, Partial Mayo Score and CDAI. Significantly higher IL-6 levels were found in patients with low body fat in comparison to patients with normal body fat. Furthermore, significantly higher mean IL-6 levels were observed in patients with excess body fat in comparison to patients with normal body fat, and also in comparison to patients with deficient body fat. IL-6 and IL-1β may provide extra information regarding the nutritional status of IBD patients. IL-10 can be considered a non-invasive biomarker of IBD activity

    An assessment of the antioxidant vitamins concentration in people with metabolic syndrome working in agriculture

    Wstęp: Witaminy A, C i E stanowią ważną barierę antyoksydacyjną. Danych dotyczących stanu odżywienia populacji polskiej witaminami antyoksydacyjnymi jest niewiele, a szczególnie mało dotyczy osób aktywnych fizycznie z zaburzeniami metabolicznymi. Celem badania była ocena stężenia witamin A, C i E w surowicy krwi i częstości ich niedoborów u osób z zespołem metabolicznym (ZM) pracujących w rolnictwie oraz zależności między stężeniem witamin antyoksydacyjnych w surowicy a tradycyjnymi biomarkerami chorób sercowo-naczyniowych. Materiał i metody: W badaniu wzięło udział 332 mieszkańców województwa łódzkiego pracujących w rolnictwie: 231 osób z ZM i 101 osób zdrowych. Stężenie witamin A, C i E w surowicy krwi badano za pomocą wysokosprawnej chromatografii cieczowej, a spożycie witamin z dietą oceniano za pomocą programu Dieta 5.0 na podstawie 24-godzinnych wywiadów żywieniowych. Wyniki: Średnie stężenia witamin A, C i E w surowicy krwi osób z ZM były istotnie mniejsze niż w grupie bez ZM. Stężenie nie korelowało ze spożyciem witamin z dietą, ale korelowało ze stężeniem cholesterolu HDL. Stwierdzono korelację między stężeniem w surowicy witamin A i C oraz A i E u pracowników z ZM. Wnioski: Stężenie witamin antyoksydacyjnych w surowicy pracowników z ZM było istotnie mniejsze niż w grupie osób zdrowych, mimo podobnego poziomu aktywności fizycznej. Wysokie spożycie witamin z dietą nie różnicowało ich stężenia w surowicy osób z ZM zatrudnionych w rolnictwie. Stężenie cholesterolu HDL u osób z ZM korelowało ze stężeniem wszystkich witamin antyoksydacyjnych.Background: Vitamins A, C and E are important parts of the antioxidant barrier. Polish data on antioxidant vitamins deficiency in the population are rare, especially among physically active people with metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum concentrations of vitamins A, C and E in people with metabolic syndrome (MS) working in agriculture, the prevalence of their deficiency in these workers, and the correlation between antioxidant vitamins concentration and traditional biomarkers of cardiovascular diseases. Material and Methods: The study included 332 residents of the Łódź Voivodeship working in agriculture: 231 people with MS and 101 healthy ones. The serum concentrations of vitamins A, C and E were assessed using the chemiluminescent immunoassay technology. The antioxidant vitamins intake was assessed by means of a 24-h recall questionnaire using Diet 5.0 software. Results: The mean serum concentrations of vitamins A, C and E were significantly lower in the MS workers than in the healthy ones No correlation was found between the antioxidant vitamins concentration and the dietary intake but there was a correlation between the antioxidant vitamins concentration and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). A correlation was found between the serum concentrations of vitamins A and C, and vitamins A and E, in the MS workers. Conclusions: The serum concentrations of antioxidant vitamins in the MS workers were significantly lower than in the healthy controls, despite the similar physical activity level. The dietary intake had no impact on the serum concentrations of these vitamins. The HDL-C concentration in the MS workers correlated with the concentrations of all antioxidant vitamins
