Automatic VHDL Model Generation of Parameterized FIR Filters

This paper describes a Java-based tool that automatically generates structural level VHDL models of FIR Filters. Automatic generation of VHDL models allows the designer to rapidly explore the design space and test the impact of parameters on the design. The tool is based on a general purpose computer arithmetic component package developed at Lehigh University and can easily be extended to enable rapid prototyping of other hardware accelerators used in embedded systems. In this paper, we describe the e#ects of truncated multipliers in FIR filters. We show that a 22.5 % reduction in area can be achieved for a 24-tap filter with 16-bit coe#cients, and that the reduction error SNR is only 2.4 dB less than the roundo# error SNR of the same filter with no truncation

The Sandblaster Software-Defined Radio Platform for Mobile 4G Wireless Communications

We present a tier 2 Software Defined-Radio platform (SDR), built around the latest Sandbridge Technologies' multithreaded Digital Signal Processor (DSP) SB3500, along with the description of major design steps taken to ensure the best radio link and computational performance. This SDR platform is capable of executing 4G wireless communication standards such as WiMAX Wave 2, WLAN 802.11 g, and LTE. Performance results for WiMAX are presented in the conclusion section

Fourcross shaped metamaterial filters fabricated from high temperature superconducting YBCO and Au thin films for terahertz waves

In this study, we present a new, unique fourcross shaped metamaterial terahertz (THz) filter fabricated from both gold thin films and YBa2Cu3O7-δ high Tc superconducting thin films. A commercial electromagnetic simulation software, CST Microwave Studio, is used to design and optimize the metamaterial filter structures. The proposed fourcross shaped rectangular filter structure consists of periodic metallic rings where strip lines are located at the sides of the ring. Fourcross metamaterial filters are fabricated by using e-beam lithography and ion beam exhing techniques. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy measurements validated the design predictions for both the center frequencies and bandwidths of the resonances due to the fourcross structures. The resonance switching of the transmission spectra was investigated by lowering the temperature below the critical transition temperature. This resonance switching effect is not observed in filters made up of metals. This novel fourcross rectangular resonator with a temperature-dependent resonance behavior holds great potential for active, tunable and low loss THz devices for imaging, sensing, and detection applications.TUBITAK (114F091); METU research office (BAP-08-011-2016-053); BAGEP Award of the Science Academy in Turkey; Turkish Academy of Science

In marine biology there is a lack of effective, automated techniques for analysis and sorting. For the Macro Flow Planktometer (MFP) developed during MAROPT I/II a sorting module should be developed to faciliate analysis-triggered sorting of organisms. For the subproject in Kiel an empty-image rejection device should be developed to filter useful images out of an analog video signal. A setup of the MFP with an electromechanical sorting module was constructed and build. The additional electronic circuitry for the sorting module was developed on an Eurocard board. For adjusting purposes a microscope with an LED flags illumination was added. Using eggs and larvae of artemia salina as test particles, a purity of the sorted fraction of more than 90% could be achieved. In Hamburg different fluorochromes have been tested. Propidium iodide has proved its suitability. A staining technique using this fluorochrome has been developed. For the fast sedimenting particles a new sample inlet was developed. An average of 86% of the organisms was separated from the sediment. For the realtime detection of empty video images the 'Primaspeed' Image processing board by Leutron Vision is employed. Empty-image detection is done by evaluating a histogram. If the number of white pixels exceeds a certain limit, the image is routed to the output, otherwise the output is blanked.
