Satellite mobile data service for Canada
A commercial mobile satellite system which is to be constructed and operated in Canada is examined. This is done in two phases. First, mobile data services was introduced. Hub equipment and 3000 mobile data terminals were supplied. Over the satellite tests were performed. The mobile data service provides full two way digital messaging automatic vehicle location and fleet management services. The second phase is to construct, launch and make operational the MSAT satellite and associated network control facilities. The implementation is examined of the mobile data service in Canada, including the technical description. Marketing and applications are also examined
CryoTran user's manual, version 1.0
The development of cryogenic fluid management systems for space operation is a major portion of the efforts of the Cryogenic Fluids Technology Office (CFTO) at the NASA Lewis Research Center. Analytical models are a necessary part of experimental programs which are used to verify the results of experiments and are also used as a predictor for parametric studies. The CryoTran computer program is a bridge to obtain analytical results. The object of CryoTran is to coordinate these separate analyses into an integrated framework with a user-friendly interface and a common cryogenic property database. CryoTran is an integrated software system designed to help solve a diverse set of problems involving cryogenic fluid storage and transfer in both ground and low-g environments
Convectively driven shear and decreased heat flux
We report on direct numerical simulations of two-dimensional, horizontally
periodic Rayleigh-B\'enard convection, focusing on its ability to drive
large-scale horizontal flow that is vertically sheared. For the Prandtl numbers
() between 1 and 10 simulated here, this large-scale shear can be induced
by raising the Rayleigh number () sufficiently, and we explore the
resulting convection for up to . When present in our simulations,
the sheared mean flow accounts for a large fraction of the total kinetic
energy, and this fraction tends towards unity as . The shear helps
disperse convective structures, and it reduces vertical heat flux; in parameter
regimes where one state with large-scale shear and one without are both stable,
the Nusselt number of the state with shear is smaller and grows more slowly
with . When the large-scale shear is present with , the
convection undergoes strong global oscillations on long timescales, and heat
transport occurs in bursts. Nusselt numbers, time-averaged over these bursts,
vary non-monotonically with for . When the shear is present with
, the flow does not burst, and convective heat transport is
sustained at all times. Nusselt numbers then grow roughly as powers of ,
but the growth rates are slower than any previously reported for
Rayleigh-B\'enard convection without large-scale shear. We find the Nusselt
numbers grow proportionally to when and to when

Data management for JGOFS: Theory and design
The Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), currently being organized under the auspices of the Scientific Committee for Ocean Research (SCOR), is intended to be a decade long internationally coordinated program. The main goal of JGOFS is to determine and understand on a global scale the processes controlling the time-varying fluxes of carbon and associated biogenic elements in the ocean and to evaluate the related exchanges with the atmosphere, sea floor and continental boundaries. 'A long-term goal of JGOFS will be to establish strategies for observing, on long time scales, changes in ocean biogeochemical cycles in relation to climate change'. Participation from a large number of U.S. and foreign institutions is expected. JGOFS investigators have begun a set of time-series measurements and global surveys of a wide variety of biological, chemical and physical quantities, detailed process-oriented studies, satellite observations of ocean color and wind stress and modeling of the bio-geochemical processes. These experiments will generate data in amounts unprecedented in the biological and chemical communities; rapid and effortless exchange of these data will be important to the success of JGOFS
Natural History in Iowa: The Early Phases
Natural history in Iowa prior to the 20th Century can be conveniently arranged into 4 phases: Native American, before the Louisiana Purchase, between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, and after 1850. Native American natural history was extensive and had a distinctly spiritual character. Natural history was a component of European exploration up to the time of the Louisiana Purchase, but was not treated as a separate endeavor; the evidence from this period comes from the journals and diaries of early exploreres, fur traders and the like. Between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, natural history changed from its status as an adjunct to geographic exploration, for instance government sponsored expeditions along the rivers and Army excursions into the interior, to systematic research with natural history as the primary goal. During this period, descriptions of natural history moved from being parts of exploration narratives to reports on natural history itself. After 1850, natural history in Iowa encompassed organized, systematic efforts to record the geology, environment and biota of the state
Strip Mining, Peromyscus and Other Small Mammals in Southern Iowa
Small mammal presence, diversity and reproduction were compared from summer 1975 to summer 1976 on abandoned coal strip mine spoils and unmined land in southern Iowa. More species were trapped on the unmined area, while the relative dominance of Peromyscus spp. on mined land was greater. Peromyscus populations on mined land exhibited a shorter breeding season than on unmined land. Other population parameters did not show clear differences between the areas
