Educating first-year students about the benefits of conservation partnerships: an experiential approach
Loss of biodiversity and habitats is one of the greatest threats to the Australian environment and education has a critical role to play in addressing this issue. Conservation of Australia’s environment occurs as a partnership of government agencies, private enterprise, scientists, educators, and the community. As future leaders of conservation activities it is essential for students to gain an understanding of the application of this partnership model. This presentation describes practical work undertaken by first year students studying in the Bachelor of Science at the University of Newcastle that has been designed to mimic a real-world conservation project. The project involves students in a partnership with government and the community to rehabilitate a local nature reserve where several endangered species are threatened by weed invasion. Students research the problem (weed invasion), quantitatively assess the impacts of weed invasion and a management intervention (community-based bush regeneration), and work alongside a community-based bushcare group and government agency during on-ground rehabilitation of the reserve. Surveys of students (via a reflective diary) have found that key outcomes have been the acquired knowledge and skills that are relevant to a critical issue for the Australian environment; a more optimistic attitude towards environmental issues and their potential to develop solutions; a positive perspective about the role of community involvement in conservation of Australia’s environment; continued participation in community bushcare groups outside the classroom; and personal involvement in solving a critical conservation issue. The students’ work has provided long-term monitoring of the effectiveness of the conservation activities since 2003, a task that is beyond the technical capabilities of most community volunteer groups and the financial constraints of government agencies

Ganymede MHD Model: Magnetospheric Context for Juno's PJ34 Flyby
On June 7th, 2021 the Juno spacecraft visited Ganymede and provided the first
in situ observations since Galileo's last flyby in 2000. The measurements
obtained along a one-dimensional trajectory can be brought into global context
with the help of three-dimensional magnetospheric models. Here we apply the
magnetohydrodynamic model of Duling et al. (2014) to conditions during the Juno
flyby. In addition to the global distribution of plasma variables we provide
mapping of Juno's position along magnetic field lines, Juno's distance from
closed field lines and detailed information about the magnetic field's
topology. We find that Juno did not enter the closed field line region and that
the boundary between open and closed field lines on the surface matches the
poleward edges of the observed auroral ovals. To estimate the sensitivity of
the model results, we carry out a parameter study with different upstream
plasma conditions and other model parameters
Increasing Understanding in Children of Depressed Parents: Predictors and Moderators of Intervention Response
We evaluated predictors and moderators of differential response to two family-based depression prevention programs for families with a depressed parent: a clinician-facilitated intervention and a lecture group intervention. Individual and family level variables were examined using regression analyses with generalized estimating equations. For the outcome of child understanding of depression, parental changes in child-related behaviors and attitudes predicted greater child understanding ( < 0.001). For the parent outcome of behavior and attitude change, across intervention conditions, younger parent age ( < 0.05), female parent gender ( < 0.01), more chronic and severe parental depression history ( < 0.05), lower SES ( < 0.05), and single-parent status ( < 0.05) were associated with better outcomes across conditions. Effect sizes were moderate, ranging from 0.4 to 0.7 SD. Family and marital functioning were not found to be predictors of any outcomes. When both parents were depressed at baseline, there was no difference in the clinician-versus lecture-based approach, and when only the father was depressed, families reported more changes with the clinician condition than with the lecture condition ( < 0.05). Findings from this study can help identify intervention strategies that are appropriate for different types of at-risk individuals and families
X-rays Studies of the Solar System
X-ray observatories contribute fundamental advances in Solar System studies
by probing Sun-object interactions, developing planet and satellite surface
composition maps, probing global magnetospheric dynamics, and tracking
astrochemical reactions. Despite these crucial results, the technological
limitations of current X-ray instruments hinder the overall scope and impact
for broader scientific application of X-ray observations both now and in the
coming decade. Implementation of modern advances in X-ray optics will provide
improvements in effective area, spatial resolution, and spectral resolution for
future instruments. These improvements will usher in a truly transformative era
of Solar System science through the study of X-ray emission.Comment: White paper submitted to Astro2020, the Astronomy and Astrophysics

SelfPub 2.0
The self-publishing revolution has created a drastic increase in the number or works being published in the social sciences and humanities. This windfall of content has created an abundance that can be overwhelming, but it ultimately presents an opportunity for libraries to develop deeper and more unique collections. The preconference at the 2013 Charleston Conference focused on several interrelated topics in the self-publishing world: navigating the abundance of self-published material, libraries’ adoption of the role of publisher, vendor perspectives on self-published content and plans for the future, issues in humanities and social science acquisitions of self-published works, and an agent’s perspective on how self-publishing fits into the traditional publishing world. Speakers include librarians, publishers, vendors, and academics involved with a number of projects and efforts to pioneer this emerging field
