Tuning of the luminescence in poly((silanylene)thiophene)s
Synthetic routes to alternating copolymers consisting of oligosilylene blocks and oligothiophene blocks (T-x; x = 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 rings) are presented. Solubility requirements for obtaining acceptable molecular weights and, eventually, for film formation are met by the introduction of butyl groups replacing methyls on the silicon atoms and by employing T-6 blocks carrying two octyl substituents. Additionally, substituted oligothiophenes are synthesized as an aid in the interpretation of NMR, absorption, and fluorescence spectra. Regarding the electronic configuration of the oligothiophene blocks, NMR spectra show clear differences between plain oligothiophenes, end-substituted oligothiophenes, and polymers, indicative of pi-sigma interactions with the oligosilylene blocks and possible through-conjugation to adjacent blocks in polymers. Red shifts in optical spectra show a parallel trend across the various compounds based on the same oligothiophene unit, related to the stabilization of photoexcited states on the oligothiophene by the oligosilylene substituents. These effects are strong in T-2-based compounds and reduced fdr longer T-n. The main feature of the spectra is the decrease of the transition energies with the size of the oligothiophene blocks in the polymers. Since this effect is also found in fluorescence, it enables one to adjust the luminescence wavelength by choosing the proper block length (''chemical tuning''). Fluorescence quantum efficiencies in solution are found to be remarkably high in polymers based on T-2 blocks. Spin-coated films of T-2-based (or T-3-based) polymers show evidence of T-4 (T-6) impurity blocks that act as an exciton trap
X-Ray Scattering Measurements of the Transient Structure of a Driven Charge-Density-Wave
We report time-resolved x-ray scattering measurements of the transient
structural response of the sliding {\bf Q} charge-density-wave (CDW) in
NbSe to a reversal of the driving electric field. The observed time scale
characterizing this response at 70K varies from 15 msec for driving
fields near threshold to 2 msec for fields well above threshold. The
position and time-dependent strain of the CDW is analyzed in terms of a
phenomenological equation of motion for the phase of the CDW order parameter.
The value of the damping constant, eV
seconds \AA, is in excellent agreement with the value
determined from transport measurements. As the driving field approaches
threshold from above, the line shape becomes bimodal, suggesting that the CDW
does not depin throughout the entire sample at one well-defined voltage.Comment: revtex 3.0, 7 figure
Copyright and cultural work: an exploration
This article first discusses the contemporary debate on cultural “creativity” and the economy. Second, it considers the current state of UK copyright law and how it relates to cultural work. Third, based on empirical research on British dancers and musicians, an analysis of precarious cultural work is presented. A major focus is how those who follow their art by way of “portfolio” work handle their rights in ways that diverge significantly from the current simplistic assumptions of law and cultural policy. Our conclusions underline the distance between present top-down conceptions of what drives production in the cultural field and the actual practice of dancers and musicians
First Measurement of A_N at sqrt(s)=200 GeV in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at RHIC
We report on the first measurement of the single spin analyzing power (A_N)
at sqrt(s)=200GeV, obtained by the pp2pp experiment using polarized proton
beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Data points were measured
in the four momentum transfer t range 0.01 < |t| < 0.03 (GeV/c)^2. Our result,
averaged over the whole t-interval is about one standard deviation above the
calculation, which uses interference between electromagnetic spin-flip
amplitude and hadronic non-flip amplitude, the source of A_N. The difference
could be explained by an additional contribution of a hadronic spin-flip
amplitude to A_N.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. New values of polarization errors. Final version

First Measurement of Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at RHIC
The first result of the pp2pp experiment at RHIC on elastic scattering of
polarized protons at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV is reported here. The exponential slope
parameter b of the diffractive peak of the elastic cross section in the t range
0.010 <= |t| <= 0.019 (GeV/c)^2 was measured to be b = 16.3 +- 1.6 (stat.) +-
0.9 (syst.) (GeV/c)^{-2} .Comment: 9 pages 5 figure
