Simultaneously heated at 800 °C and under a 40 kbar pressure, the tricalcium phosphate ÎČ'-Cd3(PO4)2 gives a new phosphate phase with a monoclinic symmetry. In order to identify it we compare it to the Zn2Cd(PO4)2 and ZnCd2(PO4)2 solid solutions with a graftonite type structure in the Zn3(PO4)2-Cd3(PO4)2 system.
After heating at 950 °C Caâ(POâ)â â Caâ(POâ)â system gives rise at normal temperature and pressure to limited solid solutions which have been identified by X-ray diffraction. The calcium rich phase has the ÎČ-Caâ(POâ)â structure. The cadmium rich phase has the ÎČ'-Cdâ(POâ)â.
Phospho-calcic and arseno-calcic A type carbonated apatites evolve at 950° C when compressed at 40 kilobars. «High pressure » apatites are thermally stabler than uncompressed products. Infrared spectra of «high pressure » apatites show that carbonate ions occupy two different sites. The study of infrared spectrum evolution during the substitution of their carbonate ions by fluoride ions confirms the existence of two sites for carbonate ions.
It is possible by treatment of «high pressure » arseno-calcic carbonated apatite to obtain a new apatite without decomposition. In that new apatite all carbonate ions occupy identical sites.
Ca3(VO4)2 - Pb3(VO4)2 system has been studied at standard pressure using samples previously compressed or not. Various ranges have been determined and phases identified at atmospheric pressure and at 50 kbar. Particularly, after high pressure action, Ca3(VO4)2 gives a monoclinic phase with similar unit cell to low temperature lead vanadate ones.
Studies of the physicochemical nature, specially by E.S.R., of phosphocalcium carbonated fluorapatites like the francolite have shown that some sites POâÂłâ» are occupied by a group (COâÂČâ» + â), others by a group (COâÂČâ» + Fâ»). One or the other mechanism of substitution is preponderant according to the fluorine ion concentration of the solution where these apatites have been prepared. Vignoles-Montrejaud Mireille, Bonel Gilbert, Bacquet GĂ©rard. Biotechnology, material sciences and bone repair
International audienceIt is very likely that the need for bone substitutes will increase in the next decade. The present substitutes are generally bioactive and osteoconductive. Glassy or ceramic materials have been used up to now to act as a guide for bone healing tissue and were shown to admit bone apposition at their surface, probably due to the epitaxial growth of carbonated apatite crystals on it. Different forms of bone substitutes have been developed which do not show exactly the same properties. The reaction of bone tissue against bioactive material debris show major differences from that of polymers or metals. In vitro models were developed to study the interface between bone cells and extracellular matrix, and the surface of bioactive material. Biotechnology makes available some morphgenetic proteins or growth factors in large quantities for combination with osteoconductive material which then can become osteoinductive. Bioartificial bone tissue constituted by a primary osteogenetic cell line immobilised at the surface of osteoconductive materials maade it possible to obtain osteogenic materials. The ideal bone material is still to be engineered. The combination of material sciences and and molecular biology will help to optimise the next generation of material surfaces
Two-year outcome of hydroxyapatite-coated prostheses: Two femoral prostheses retrieved at autopsy
We performed a histological study of the bone-implant interface on 2 human femurs implanted with a hydroxyapatite-coated self-locking stem for 2 years. Extensive bone formation with no intervening fibrous tissue was noted around the entire circumference of the 2 prostheses. the newly-formed bone had 2 morphotypes: an alveolar disposition with a continuous contact between bone and hydroxyapatite, and a digitiform one where distinct bony trabeculÊ were in contact with the ceramic coating or with the bone marrow. Partial or even total resorption of the hydroxyapatite coating was clearly identified, these areas showing bone in contact with the metal. © 1994 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
