Tracing Paintings in Napoleonic Italy: Archival Records and the Spatial and Contextual Displacement of Artworks

    Get PDF
Using a Venetian case study from the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, this article demonstrates how archival research enables us to trace the spatial life of artworks. The Revolutionary and Napoleonic policy of the suppression of religious corporations, followed by the appropriation of their patrimony, as well as the widespread looting of artworks, led to the centralisation of patrimony in newly established museums in the capitals of the Empire and its satellite kingdoms. This made the geographical and contextual displacement, transnationalisation, and change in the value of artworks inevitable

A Concept for Attribute-Based Authorization on D-Grid Resources

    Get PDF
In Germany's D-Grid project numerous Grid communities are working together to provide a common overarching Grid infrastructure. The major aims of D-Grid are the integration of existing Grid deployments and their interoperability. The challenge lies in the heterogeneity of the current implementations: three Grid middleware stacks and different Virtual Organization management approaches have to be embraced to achieve the intended goals. In this article we focus oil the implementation of an attribute-based authorization infrastructure that not only leverages the well-known VO attributes but also campus attributes managed by a Shibboleth federation

The structure of the title compound, [Mg2(C4H9)(C14H18NO)3], contains two Mg atoms bridged by two μ2-O atoms from two of the three ketiminate ligands, while the third ketiminate is strictly chelating to one of the Mg atoms, which is thereby five-coordinate. In place of a chelating ligand, the second Mg atom is ligated by a single terminal n-butyl group and thus is four-coordinate. This is, so far, the only structurally characterized mixed magnesium ketiminate–alkyl cluster. The geometry at the first Mg atom is close to trigonal-bipyramidal with one chelating and one bridging O atom in the axial positions and two chelating N and one bridging O atom in the equatorial positions. The geometry at the second Mg atom is very distorted from tetrahedral, with an O—Mg—C angle of 131.0 (1)°

La sociolingüística en el curriculum: ¿qué lugar para la(s) lengua(s)?

    Get PDF

Plasmids for in vivo construction of integrative Candida albicans vectors in saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Get PDF
A general system has been devised for the in vivo construction of Candida albicans integrative vectors in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The system is especially useful for the integration of genes in C. albicans that cannot be propagated in Escherichia coli possibly because of their toxic effects. The ligation of S. cerevisiae 2μ sequences to a C. albicans integrative vector permits in vivo maintenance and gap repair cloning within S. cerevisiae. After the vector assembly, it can be purified from S. cerevisiae or amplified by PCR and then used for transformation of C. albicans. The S. cerevisiae 2μ sequence is completely removed by linearization prior to C. albicans transformation, such that no unwanted DNA is transferred in the final construct. The system was successfully used to clone and reintegrate the C. albicans JEN2 gene, which encodes a membrane protein that is apparently toxic to E. coli. Three popular C. albicans integrative vectors CIp10, CIp20 and CIp30 are now available in versions that permit gap repair in S. cerevisiae. GenBank Accession Nº: CIp10-2μ (GU550119), CIp20-2μ (GU550120) and CIp30-2μ (GU550121).This study was supported by FEDER, Portugal (Grant No. POCI/BIA-BCM/57812/2004; Eixo 2, Medida 45 2.3, QCAIII-FEDER). The aim of this article is to analyze the treatment of the content ‘sentence’ in textbooks, in terms of which are the theoretical and didactic decisions conveyed in each proposal. The starting hypothesis is that grammar contents are listed in textbooks as a collection type curriculum (Bernstein, 1988, in Magendzo, 2008), with the omission of phenomena which are central for the understanding of the functioning of language, and activities that do not aim at linguistic reflection. A sample of ten textbooks is studied, textbooks destined to the language classroom (Gerbaudo, 2006) of Primary and Secondary Education, which are most used in schools of Paraná city (Entre Ríos). There is a preference for the treatment of the content ‘sentence’ from a structuralist approach, which excludes central phenomena and suggests activities that relate with the recognition of syntactic units

Policy Brief on Revising the TB Action Plan for the WHO European Region 2016-2020: What amendments are needed to reach the UN SDG3 to eliminate TB epidemics by 2030?

Context:  The World Health Organization (WHO) European Region’s political attention shifted to the COVID-19 pandemic from the start of 2020 onwards. A consequence of this shift has been decreased political attention towards combating tuberculosis (TB) in the WHO European Region. As a result, decreasing TB data reporting, rising death rates, and increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have prevented the WHO European Region from remaining on track to reach the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) to eliminate TB epidemics by 2030. Furthermore, the WHO tuberculosis action plan for the WHO European Region 2016-2020 has missed opportunities to mitigate TB in this region, thus exacerbating the issue and preventing the achievement of SDG3.  Policy Options: The WHO’s Roadmap to implement the tuberculosis action plan for the WHO European Region 2016-2020 provided guidance for TB management in the member states (MS), but did not sufficiently address AMR, lacking promotion of new TB vaccine rollout, nor describe national TB implementation strategies. The WHO 2016-2020 TB action plan is now overdue and WHO policymakers should consider the following recommendations when creating the new TB action plan. Recommendations: This policy brief addresses the urgent need for a new WHO TB action plan to integrate a national level implementation commitment, AMR programming, and WHO support in creating a vaccine strategy with aims for the WHO European Region to achieve SDG3 and eliminate TB epidemics by 2030

GeoTwain: Geospatial Analysis and Visualisation for Researchers in Transcultural Studies

    Get PDF
In our research cluster on transculturality many projects deal with georeferenced data. This paper offers an introduction to the new project GeoTwain that works on visualization techniques for such data. Based on an analysis of the global telegraph network as an example of transcultural research using georeferenced data, the paper derives user requirements by combining experiences gained from previous projects and specifies a set of solutions. It is the aim of GeoTwain to provide easy visualization of 4-Dinformation based on Google Earth and to grasp spatial relationships embedded in historical evidence to analyse, recombine and disaggregate geo-referenced historical data without having to use more specialized and highly complex GIS Tools. Envisioned visualization with GeoTwain allows for fast and efficient assessment of georeferencing’s analytical potential in any given case; it also allows the user to carefully weigh further investments in data enrichment in relation to expected findings. Both the development and application of GeoTwain are embedded in the broader research environment infrastructure called Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA)
