Modulares Polarisationsspektrometrie-Geraet zur Multielement-Wasser-Analyse Weiterentwicklung und Erprobung. Schlussbericht

The aim of the project was the development of an apparatus for multielement determination in drinking water analysis via the polarization-spectroscopic effect of coherent forward scattering in combination with a continuum source. It should basically provide fast and simultaneous detection of several elements and a modular principle of construction by using a user-definable configuration. The modular design offers a low-cost version for smaller users as well as an advanced version with simultaneous multielement capability and with options for electrothermal as well as with flame atomization. In particular, the realized advantageous features were the capability for simultaneous multielement-determination without the need to change the light source, a wide analytical working range by measuring on strong and weak element resonance lines and simultaneous determination of trace elements together with main constituents of high concentrations. With the new concept of beam guidance via modern, aspheric off-axis-reflectors and the use of new home-made, chromatic corrected Glan-polarizers, significant improvement was achieved compared with former devices, so that simultaneous multielement-determination (over the full spectral detection range) is possible by now. The computer controlled instrument was calibrated with nonlinear functions by means of multielement reference solutions, and then tested with real water samples. The results were compared with these of standard methods (e.g. AAS) by interchanging of samples with other institutes. Die Benard-Marangoni-Instabilitaet unter Mikrogravitation Schlussbericht

We succeeded to establish a flat free circular oil layer of 5 mm thickness under a He-gas gap during the approximately 380 s of #mu#-g time of the flight of the sounding rocket TEXUS 21 and to produce the convective cellular pattern (Marangoni effect). The onset of convection (the critical Marangoni number Ma"c) and a cellular (1-6-12) pattern have been registered. The gravitational influence (much smaller convection cells compared to #mu#-g) was significant in the reference expierments under 1-g. The convective heat transport under #mu#-g has been measured by temperature measurements in the fluid layers. The Nusselt number at 4 x Ma"c was Nu=1,8. This is a relatively high value which shows the importance of the Bernard-Marangoni Convection for heat transport under microgravity. This experiment is the very first under microgravity on the Bernard-Marangoni-Instability on a system with a flat free surface and under controlled temperature boundary conditions. The special boundary conditions realized in this experiment, - namely liquid lateral walls, - allowed to reach an almost stationary flow state near the end of the short #mu#-g experiment time.
