Towards a sustainable economy? Socio-technical transitions in the green building sector
Making the transition to a green economy is a major policy driver in the UK and other countries. Entrepreneurs are suggested as being at the forefront of this transition and as a driving force for sustainability. These âgreen entrepreneursâ may represent a new type of entrepreneurial behaviour combining economic, environmental and social aims. In this paper, we present empirical work conducted with green entrepreneurs in the UK green building sector. Buildings have significant impacts on the environment, both in terms of materials and post-construction energy demands. Drawing on sustainability transitions theory, we examine the role of green entrepreneurs in affecting change and suggest that green building niches are less consensual than previously theorised. In theorising green entrepreneurs, we also point to the need to consider them within wider networks of activity rather than as lone actors and the implications this has for policy
Institutionalizing alternative economic spaces? An interpretivist perspective on diverse economies
This article offers an approach that helps geographers and others to carefully and critically reexamine prospects for diverse economies. We propose an interpretative institutionalist perspective is useful for elucidating overlooked opportunities for creating alternative economic visions and practices by revealing the process of âmeaning makingâ undertaken by actors in the process of developing policy responses to various dilemmas. We explore this notion in the context of de-growth or post-growth. De-growth is a way of thinking about the economy in ways that are not growth oriented, or fixated on GDP, but on the redistribution of wealth and living within the Earthâs ecosystems
Spin dynamics of coupled spin ladders near quantum criticality in Ba2CuTeO6
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic
excitations in Ba2CuTeO6, proposed by ab initio calculations to magnetically
realize weakly coupled antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders. Isolated
ladders are expected to have a singlet ground state protected by a spin gap.
Ba2CuTeO6 orders magnetically, but with a small Neel temperature relative to
the exchange strength, suggesting that the interladder couplings are relatively
small and only just able to stabilize magnetic order, placing Ba2CuTeO6 close
in parameter space to the critical point separating the gapped phase and Neel
order. Through comparison of the observed spin dynamics with linear spin wave
theory and quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we propose values for all relevant
intra- and interladder exchange parameters, which place the system on the
ordered side of the phase diagram in proximity to the critical point. We also
compare high field magnetization data with quantum Monte Carlo predictions for
the proposed model of coupled ladders.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
Effect of oil palm sustainability certification on deforestation and fire in Indonesia.
Many major corporations and countries have made commitments to purchase or produce only "sustainable" palm oil, a commodity responsible for substantial tropical forest loss. Sustainability certification is the tool most used to fulfill these procurement policies, and around 20% of global palm oil production was certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2017. However, the effect of certification on deforestation in oil palm plantations remains unclear. Here, we use a comprehensive dataset of RSPO-certified and noncertified oil palm plantations (âŒ188,000 km2) in Indonesia, the leading producer of palm oil, as well as annual remotely sensed metrics of tree cover loss and fire occurrence, to evaluate the impact of certification on deforestation and fire from 2001 to 2015. While forest loss and fire continued after RSPO certification, certified palm oil was associated with reduced deforestation. Certification lowered deforestation by 33% from a counterfactual of 9.8 to 6.6% y-1 Nevertheless, most plantations contained little residual forest when they received certification. As a result, by 2015, certified areas held less than 1% of forests remaining within Indonesian oil palm plantations. Moreover, certification had no causal impact on forest loss in peatlands or active fire detection rates. Broader adoption of certification in forested regions, strict requirements to avoid all peat, and routine monitoring of clearly defined forest cover loss in certified and RSPO member-held plantations appear necessary if the RSPO is to yield conservation and climate benefits from reductions in tropical deforestation
Taking Development Seriously: Critique of the 2008 \u3ci\u3eJME\u3c/i\u3e Special Issue on Moral Functioning
This essay comments on articles that composed a Journal of Moral Education Special Issue (September, 2008, 37[3]). The issue was intended to honor the 50th anniversary of Lawrence Kohlbergâs doctoral dissertation and his subsequent impact on the field of moral development and education. The articles were characterized by the issue editor (Don Collins Reed) as providing a âlook forwardâ from Kohlbergâs work toward a more comprehensive or integrated model of moral functioning. Prominent were culturally pluralist and biologically based themes, such as cultural learning; expert skill; culturally shaped and neurobiologically based predispositions or intuitions; and moral self-relevance or centrality. Inadequately represented, however, was Kohlbergâs (and Piagetâs) key concept of development as the construction of a deeper or more adequate understanding not reducible to particular socialization practices or cultural contexts. Also neglected were related cognitive-developmental themes, along with supportive evidence. Robert Colesâs account of a sudden rescue is used as a heuristic to depict Piagetâs/Kohlbergâs approach to the development of moral functioning. We conclude that, insofar as the Special Issue does not take development seriously, it moves us not forward but, instead, back to the problems of moral relativism and moral paralysis that Kohlberg sought to redress from the start of his work more than 50 years ago
On Infrared Excesses Associated With Li-Rich K Giants
Infrared (IR) excesses around K-type red giants (RGs) have previously been
discovered using IRAS data, and past studies have suggested a link between RGs
with overabundant Li and IR excesses, implying the ejection of circumstellar
shells or disks. We revisit the question of IR excesses around RGs using higher
spatial resolution IR data, primarily from WISE. Our goal was to elucidate the
link between three unusual RG properties: fast rotation, enriched Li, and IR
excess. We have 316 targets thought to be K giants, about 40% of which we take
to be Li-rich. In 24 cases with previous detections of IR excess at low spatial
resolution, we believe that source confusion is playing a role, in that either
(a) the source that is bright in the optical is not responsible for the IR
flux, or (b) there is more than one source responsible for the IR flux as
measured in IRAS. We looked for IR excesses in the remaining sources,
identifying 28 that have significant IR excesses by ~20 um (with possible
excesses for 2 additional sources). There appears to be an intriguing
correlation in that the largest IR excesses are all in Li-rich K giants, though
very few Li-rich K giants have IR excesses (large or small). These largest IR
excesses also tend to be found in the fastest rotators. There is no correlation
of IR excess with the carbon isotopic ratio, 12C/13C. IR excesses by 20 um,
though relatively rare, are at least twice as common among our sample of
Li-rich K giants. If dust shell production is a common by-product of Li
enrichment mechanisms, these observations suggest that the IR excess stage is
very short-lived, which is supported by theoretical calculations. Conversely,
the Li-enrichment mechanism may only occasionally produce dust, and an
additional parameter (e.g., rotation) may control whether or not a shell is

Rate-dependent propagation of cardiac action potentials in a one-dimensional fiber
Action potential duration (APD) restitution, which relates APD to the
preceding diastolic interval (DI), is a useful tool for predicting the onset of
abnormal cardiac rhythms. However, it is known that different pacing protocols
lead to different APD restitution curves (RCs). This phenomenon, known as APD
rate-dependence, is a consequence of memory in the tissue. In addition to APD
restitution, conduction velocity restitution also plays an important role in
the spatiotemporal dynamics of cardiac tissue. We present new results
concerning rate-dependent restitution in the velocity of propagating action
potentials in a one-dimensional fiber. Our numerical simulations show that,
independent of the amount of memory in the tissue, waveback velocity exhibits
pronounced rate-dependence and the wavefront velocity does not. Moreover, the
discrepancy between waveback velocity RCs is most significant for small DI. We
provide an analytical explanation of these results, using a system of coupled
maps to relate the wavefront and waveback velocities. Our calculations show

The Chandra Source Catalog
The Chandra Source Catalog (CSC) is a general purpose virtual X-ray
astrophysics facility that provides access to a carefully selected set of
generally useful quantities for individual X-ray sources, and is designed to
satisfy the needs of a broad-based group of scientists, including those who may
be less familiar with astronomical data analysis in the X-ray regime. The first
release of the CSC includes information about 94,676 distinct X-ray sources
detected in a subset of public ACIS imaging observations from roughly the first
eight years of the Chandra mission. This release of the catalog includes point
and compact sources with observed spatial extents <~ 30''. The catalog (1)
provides access to the best estimates of the X-ray source properties for
detected sources, with good scientific fidelity, and directly supports
scientific analysis using the individual source data; (2) facilitates analysis
of a wide range of statistical properties for classes of X-ray sources; and (3)
provides efficient access to calibrated observational data and ancillary data
products for individual X-ray sources, so that users can perform detailed
further analysis using existing tools. The catalog includes real X-ray sources
detected with flux estimates that are at least 3 times their estimated 1 sigma
uncertainties in at least one energy band, while maintaining the number of
spurious sources at a level of <~ 1 false source per field for a 100 ks
observation. For each detected source, the CSC provides commonly tabulated
quantities, including source position, extent, multi-band fluxes, hardness
ratios, and variability statistics, derived from the observations in which the
source is detected. In addition to these traditional catalog elements, for each
X-ray source the CSC includes an extensive set of file-based data products that
