Implementing A Surgical Pre-Operative Checklist: Improving Transparency & Communication

    Get PDF
Our goal was to first analyze what the current practice was and if there was a need for improvement. To our knowledge, each surgical service has its own preop protocol and this is not standardized across the hospital. Furthermore, very few services have EPIC based protocols that allow for documentation and information sharing. For example, the neurosurgery service uses paper checklists, a style that is effective yet outdated. A survey was sent out to multiple departments in order to gauge the current landscape of pre-operative care. Questions were posed to analyze if there was a need for improved documentation by surgical services, whether or not nonsurgical personnel had clear operative plans for combined patients, and whether or not there was a role for a pre-operative checklist in EPIC to bring all the healthcare providers onto the same page

Social business is a process that bridges an important gap between business and benevolence. The present paper highlights the information collected through a survey of 30 potential social businessmen who are involved in different types of business activities of fifteen villages of Cox’sbazar district selected on the basis of purposive sampling. The present study focuses socio-economic characteristics of sample businessmen in study areas. The survey data reveal that the potentiality of social business development in the study areas of sample respondent is of very high degree. Further, the study pin-points a number of challenges such as lack of social and business skills of social businessmen, risks of social business management, inadequate of social data, problems in learning and adopting, lack of designing successful social business model and marketing programs of social business in study areas. The paper concludes with a number of strategies viz. promote events/marketing campaign, social business training program, village based social business, building institutions, support services and the likes in order to promote social business in Bangladesh in general and in study areas in particular. Keywords: social business, social problems, exploration of business

Adolescent Refugees Resettled in Philadelphia: A Qualitative Study with Key Informants

More than 22.5 million refugees are currently displaced globally, with refugees below the age of 18 years old making up more than half of this population. More than 3,600 have been resettled in Pennsylvania as of 2016, 875 in Philadelphia County. These families have come to the United States from countries such as Burma, Thailand, Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Forced displacement, relocation, and resettlement have been shown to have long-lasting effects on youth, and there are demonstrated mental health disparities in refugee adolescents resettled in the United States when compared to the general population of US youth. The relationship between resilience and protective factors related to mental health and wellness has been shown to be important in designing appropriate intervention and prevention strategies. Some of the most important determinants may be related to the post-migration experiences and with the appropriate understanding of the adolescent experience, may be modifiable after resettlement. An exploratory, qualitative study involving cross-sectional data and thematic analysis was performed. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants to better understand factors contributing to the experience of adolescent refugees in grades 9 through 12. Analysis highlighted five major themes in the key informant responses, health and social services, education, assimilation, connectedness, and emotional health. The data suggest room for fostering of resilience in these youth through better understanding of their specific needs and inherent vulnerabilities, improved utilization and access to health and social services, and the importance of understanding the unique impact of their identity as refugee adolescents on their development and daily experiences. The explanatory model developed based on the key informant data may be useful in informing future investigation and programming for the adolescent refugee community

Initial conditions from the shadowed Glauber model

The two component Monte-Carlo Glauber model predicts a knee-like structure in the centrality dependence of elliptic flow v2v_2 in Uranium+Uranium collisions at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{NN}}=193 GeV. It also produces a strong anti-correlation between v2v_2 and dNch/dydN_{ch}/dy in the case of top ZDC events. However, none of these features have been observed in data. We address these discrepancies by including the effect of nucleon shadowing to the two component Monte-Carlo Glauber model. Apart from addressing successfully the above issues, we find that the nucleon shadow suppresses the event by event fluctuation of various quantities, e.g. ε2\varepsilon_2 which is in accordance with expectation from the dynamical models of initial condition based on gluon saturation physics.Comment: version accepted for publication in Physics Letters
