Interpersonal Counseling in the Treatment of Adolescent Depression : A Randomized Controlled Effectiveness and Feasibility Study in School Health and Welfare Services
In order to offer early and accessible treatment for adolescents with depression, brief and effective treatments in adolescents' everyday surroundings are needed. This randomized controlled trial studied the preliminary effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of interpersonal counseling (IPC) and brief psychosocial support (BPS) in school health and welfare services. The study was conducted in the 28 lower secondary schools of a large city in Southern Finland, randomized to provide either IPC or BPS. Help-seeking 12-16-year-old adolescents with mild-to-moderate depression, with and without comorbid anxiety, were included in the study. Fifty-five adolescents received either 6 weekly sessions of IPC or BPS and two follow-up sessions. Outcome measures included self- and clinician-rated measures of depression, global functioning, and psychological distress/well-being. To assess feasibility and acceptability of the treatments, adolescents' and counselors' treatment compliance and satisfaction with treatment were assessed. Both treatments were effective in reducing depressive disorders and improving adolescents' overall functioning and well-being. At post-treatment, in both groups, over 50% of adolescents achieved recovery based on self-report and over 70% based on observer report. Effect sizes for change were medium or large in both groups at post-treatment and increased at 6-month follow-up. A trend indicating greater baseline symptom severity among adolescents treated in the IPC-providing schools was observed. Adolescents and counselors in both groups were satisfied with the treatment, and 89% of the adolescents completed the treatments and follow-ups. This trial suggests that both IPC and BPS are feasible, acceptable, and effective treatments for mild-to-moderate depression in the school setting. In addition, IPC seems effective even if comorbid anxiety exists. Our study shows that brief, structured interventions, such as IPC and BPS, are beneficial in treating mild-to-moderate depression in school settings and can be administered by professionals working at school.Peer reviewe
An Improved Upper Bound for the Ring Loading Problem
The Ring Loading Problem emerged in the 1990s to model an important special
case of telecommunication networks (SONET rings) which gained attention from
practitioners and theorists alike. Given an undirected cycle on nodes
together with non-negative demands between any pair of nodes, the Ring Loading
Problem asks for an unsplittable routing of the demands such that the maximum
cumulated demand on any edge is minimized. Let be the value of such a
solution. In the relaxed version of the problem, each demand can be split into
two parts where the first part is routed clockwise while the second part is
routed counter-clockwise. Denote with the maximum load of a minimum split
routing solution. In a landmark paper, Schrijver, Seymour and Winkler [SSW98]
showed that , where is the maximum demand value. They

Evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions for young people with mood disorders: a systematic review
INTRODUCTION: Mood disorders are amongst the most common
groups of mental disorders in young people (YP). Depression
may affect 8-20% of all YP and may result in a cascade of negative
developmental outcomes predicting long-term morbidity and poor
functioning. In view of this, the COST action ‘European Network of
Individualized Psychotherapy Treatment of Young People with
Mental Disorders’ (TREATme) was set up to help improve mental
health services in YP.OBJECTIVES: One of the overarching aims of TREATme is to carry

Reduced Ordered Binary Decision Diagram with Implied Literals: A New knowledge Compilation Approach
Knowledge compilation is an approach to tackle the computational
intractability of general reasoning problems. According to this approach,
knowledge bases are converted off-line into a target compilation language which
is tractable for on-line querying. Reduced ordered binary decision diagram
(ROBDD) is one of the most influential target languages. We generalize ROBDD by
associating some implied literals in each node and the new language is called
reduced ordered binary decision diagram with implied literals (ROBDD-L). Then
we discuss a kind of subsets of ROBDD-L called ROBDD-i with precisely i implied
literals (0 \leq i \leq \infty). In particular, ROBDD-0 is isomorphic to ROBDD;
ROBDD-\infty requires that each node should be associated by the implied
literals as many as possible. We show that ROBDD-i has uniqueness over some
specific variables order, and ROBDD-\infty is the most succinct subset in
ROBDD-L and can meet most of the querying requirements involved in the
knowledge compilation map. Finally, we propose an ROBDD-i compilation algorithm
for any i and a ROBDD-\infty compilation algorithm. Based on them, we implement
a ROBDD-L package called BDDjLu and then get some conclusions from preliminary
experimental results: ROBDD-\infty is obviously smaller than ROBDD for all
benchmarks; ROBDD-\infty is smaller than the d-DNNF the benchmarks whose
compilation results are relatively small; it seems that it is better to
transform ROBDDs-\infty into FBDDs and ROBDDs rather than straight compile the

Burnout among psychotherapists: a cross-cultural value survey among 12 European countries during the coronavirus disease pandemic.
The aim of this study was to examine cross-cultural differences, as operationalized by Schwartz's refined theory of basic values, in burnout levels among psychotherapists from 12 European countries during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. We focused on the multilevel approach to investigate if individual- and country-aggregated level values could explain differences in burnout intensity after controlling for sociodemographic, work-related characteristics and COVID-19-related distress among participants. 2915 psychotherapists from 12 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Great Britain, Serbia, Spain, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, and Switzerland) participated in this study. The participants completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey, the revised version of the Portrait Values Questionnaire, and a survey questionnaire on sociodemographic, work-related factors and the COVID-19 related distress. In general, the lowest mean level of burnout was noted for Romania, whereas the highest mean burnout intensity was reported for Cyprus. Multilevel analysis revealed that burnout at the individual level was negatively related to self-transcendence and openness-to-change but positively related to self-enhancement and conservation values. However, no significant effects on any values were observed at the country level. Male sex, younger age, being single, and reporting higher COVID-19-related distress were significant burnout correlates. Burnout among psychotherapists may be a transcultural phenomenon, where individual differences among psychotherapists are likely to be more important than differences between the countries of their practice. This finding enriches the discussion on training in psychotherapy in an international context and draws attention to the neglected issue of mental health among psychotherapists in the context of their professional functioning

Subjective well-being among psychotherapists during the coronavirus disease pandemic : A cross-cultural survey from 12 european countries
Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the amount of the total variance of the subjective well-being (SWB) of psychotherapists from 12 European countries explained by between-country vs. between-person differences regarding its cognitive (life satisfaction) and affective components (positive affect [PA] and negative affect [NA]). Second, we explored a link between the SWB and their personal (self-efficacy) and social resources (social support) after controlling for sociodemographics, work characteristics, and COVID-19-related distress.Methods: In total, 2915 psychotherapists from 12 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Great Britain, Serbia, Spain, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, and Switzerland) participated in this study. The participants completed the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the International Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Short Form (I-PANAS-SF), the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support.Results: Cognitive well-being (CWB; satisfaction with life) was a more country-dependent component of SWB than affective well-being (AWB). Consequently, at the individual level, significant correlates were found only for AWB but not for CWB. Higher AWB was linked to being female, older age, higher weekly workload, and lower COVID-19-related distress. Self-efficacy and social support explained AWB only, including their main effects and the moderating effect of self-efficacy.Conclusions: The results highlight more individual characteristics of AWB compared to CWB, with a more critical role of low self-efficacy for the link between social support and PA rather than NA. This finding suggests the need for greater self-care among psychotherapists regarding their AWB and the more complex conditions underlying their CWB.Peer reviewe
