TikTok Made Me Buy it: Emotional Carryover of Doomscrolling on Purchasing Decisions
âDoomscrolling,â defined as excessively poring through negative content on social media, has become increasingly prevalent over the past several years. Although recent research suggests that doomscrolling reduces positive emotions, even over relatively short exposure (\u3c 5 min) times, the effect of doomscrolling on other behaviors remains unexplored. This question is especially relevant because exposure to sad movie clips has previously been shown to increase willingness-to-pay (WTP) for unrelated purchases, due to the desire to change oneâs circumstances by seeking out higher rewards. In this experiment, we examined the effect of doomscrolling on purchasing decisions via exposure to video content from a popular social media platform (TikTok). Participants (N = 91) viewed 8-10 minutes of TikTok videos before choosing whether to purchase an unrelated consumer product (Apple AirPods). Participants were randomly assigned to view either content to induce sadness (thematically related to climate change) or neutral content (thematically related to nature appreciation). Relative to participants in the Nature Appreciation condition, participants in the Climate Change condition reported significantly higher levels of sadness, confirming that the emotion induction was successful. In addition, participants in the Climate Change condition had higher WTP for the AirPods. However, the results from the WTP analysis were not statistically significant, perhaps reflecting limited power due to the small sample size of this study. While methodological issues constrain the interpretation of these results, the successful replication of these findings could have practical implications for how consumers and technology companies structure decisions following extended exposure to negative content on social media
A Contribution to Facilitate the Seismic Design in Lebanon Using Short-Length Spectrum-Consistent Earthquakes
Seismic regulations of developing countries are often grounded on rules of more experienced countries. The Lebanese regulations refer to four foreign codes, this excess of guidelines generating confusion and conflicting design choices. Moreover, the scarcity of earthquakes recorded in the Lebanese area makes it difficult to obtain suitable sets of spectrum-consistent accelerograms for dynamic analyses. Sorting through the reference regulations and the indications for their local application, this paper derives and compares all the design response spectra allowed by the Lebanese
code. Consistent with the design response spectra of the two codes that are still in force (of the four referred to), some suites of spectrum-consistent accelerograms are derived. Based on the Arias intensity, a general procedure is also proposed to reduce the time duration of the accelerograms, while saving the earthquake energy content and, thus, the reliability of the results. Full-length and short-length spectrum-consistent accelerograms are thus made available for the Lebanese design.
With reference to a two-dimensional model some comparisons between response-spectrum-based and earthquake-based analyses are provided, which showed that the Lebanese code allows different safety levels for earthquake-resistant buildings. The paper provides a very useful contribution to researchers and designers that are involved in the protection of the Lebanese building heritage from seismic hazards, and it also provides data and tools that can be more generally exploited in other
seismic areas
Factors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a case-control study in the Lebanese population
Background: Genetic factors represent the major etiological contributor in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) but several studies also support the involvement of environmental factors. This last hypothesis is reinforced by the evident increase in the prevalence of this disorder in the last decades. Thus, in our study, we aimed to identify the correlation between factors related to sociodemographic elements, to child and motherâs health and ASD in order to dress a best detailed profile of the patients.
Methods: We conducted a case-control study including 64 Lebanese patients with ASD and 67 matched controls recruited from all the Lebanese districts. Our data has been analyzed by SPSS 23.0 and the statistical tests carried out were the Independent Sample t-test and the Chi-Square test. In addition, a multivariate logistic regression analysis has been carried out using variables that showed a p<0.05 in the bivariate analysis.
Results: Our findings suggest that consanguinity (OR=4; 95% CI [1.3-12.04]), familial history of ASD (6.7 [1.1- 39.3]), stress during pregnancy (3.6 [1.5 8.2]) and fetal prematurity (6.3 [1.2-33.01]) were significantly associated with increased odds of ASD. However, our results have shown no association between siblings suffering from diseases such as mental retardation, childâs infections and ASD.
Conclusion: This pilot study carried out in all the regions of Lebanon allowed us to shed the light on factors associated with ASD which might be preventable
Exploring Measurement Tools Used To Assess Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions of Pregnant Women Toward Prenatal Screening: A Systematic Review
There is a lack of standardized measurement tools globally to assess knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of expecting women toward prenatal screening. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify reasons women pursue or decline prenatal screening and compare the strengths and limitations of available measurement tools used to assess pregnant women\u27s perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes toward prenatal screening. This review followed the five-step York methodology by Arksey and O\u27Malley and incorporated recommendations from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis checklist for the extraction, analysis, and presentation of results. The five steps consisted of: (1) identification of the research questions; (2) searching for relevant studies; (3) selection of studies relevant to the research questions; (4) data charting; and (5) collation, summarization, and reporting of results. Four online databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) were selected after the librarian\u27s development of a detailed search strategy. The Rayyan platform was used between June 2023 and August 2023 to epitomize the articles produced from our search. A total of 68 eligible studies were included in the analysis. The contribution of 7q33 copy number variations for intellectual disability
Copy number variations (CNVs) at the 7q33 cytoband are very rarely described in the literature, and almost all of the cases comprise large deletions affecting more than just the q33 segment. We report seven patients (two families with two siblings and their affected mother and one unrelated patient) with neurodevelopmental delay associated with CNVs in 7q33 alone. All the patients presented mild to moderate intellectual disability (ID), dysmorphic features, and a behavioral phenotype characterized by aggressiveness and disinhibition. One family presents a small duplication in cis affecting CALD1 and AGBL3 genes, while the other four patients carry two larger deletions encompassing EXOC4, CALD1, AGBL3, and CNOT4. This work helps to refine the phenotype and narrow the minimal critical region involved in 7q33 CNVs. This paper analyses the decision of the Obama administration to redirect its
foreign policy towards Egypt in the wake of the Arab Spring. It attempts to
highlight the issue of how governments deal with decision-making at times of
crisis, and under which circumstances they take critical decisions that lead to
major shifts in their foreign policy track record. It focuses on the process that
led to a reassessment of US (United States) foreign policy, shifting from decades
of support to the autocratic regime of Hosni Mubarak, towards backing his
ouster. Specifically, the paper attempts to assess to what extent the decision to
withdraw US support from a longstanding state-leader and ally in the Middle
East can be seen as a foreign policy change (FPC). A relevant research question
this paper pursues is: how can the withdrawal of US support to a regime
considered as an ally be considered, in itself, as a radical FPC

In-depth hemodynamic phenotyping of pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease
International audienceThe commonest cause of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is left heart disease (LHD). The current classification system for definitions of PH-LHD is under review. We therefore performed prospective in-depth invasive hemodynamic phenotyping in order to assess the site of increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in PH-LHD subsets.Based on pulmonary artery occlusion waveforms yielding an estimate of the effective capillary pressure (P c' ), we partitioned PVR in larger arterial (R up , upstream resistance) and small arterial plus venous components (R ds , downstream resistance). In the case of small vessel disease, R up decreases and R ds increases. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) testing was used to assess acute vasoreactivity.Right ventricular (RV) afterload (PVR, pulmonary arterial compliance and effective arterial elastance) was significantly higher in combined post- and pre-capillary PH (Cpc-PH, n=35) than in isolated post-capillary PH (Ipc-PH, n=20). RV afterload decreased during iNO in Cpc-PH and idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (iPAH, n=31), but remained unchanged in Ipc-PH. R up was similar in Cpc-PH (66.8±10.8%) and iPAH (65.0±12.2%, p=0.530) suggesting small vessel disease, but significantly higher in Ipc-PH (96.5±4.5%, p<0.001) suggesting upstream transmission of elevated left atrial pressures (LAP).RV afterload is driven by elevated LAP in Ipc-PH and is further increased by elevated small vessel resistance in Cpc-PH. Cpc-PH is responsive to iNO. Our data support current definitions of PH-LHD subsets
