Significance of Circulating Tumor Cells Detected by the CellSearch System in Patients with Metastatic Breast Colorectal and Prostate Cancer
The increasing number of treatment options for patients with metastatic carcinomas has created a concomitant need for new methods to monitor their use. Ideally, these modalities would be noninvasive, be independent of treatment, and provide quantitative real-time analysis of tumor activity in a variety of carcinomas. Assessment of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) shed into the blood during metastasis may satisfy this need. We developed the CellSearch System to enumerate CTC from 7.5 mL of venous blood. In this review we compare the outcomes from three prospective multicenter studies investigating the use of CTC to monitor patients undergoing treatment for metastatic breast (MBC), colorectal (MCRC), or prostate cancer (MPC) and review the CTC definition used in these studies. Evaluation of CTC at anytime during the course of disease allows assessment of patient prognosis and is predictive of overall survival

The article discusses result of a survey addressing the quality of work life among audit personnel in the U.S. The result shows that dissatisfaction in the work environment affects staff\u27s performance. Creating customer value is one of the issues in business establishment. As stated, clients are demanding the expertise that comes with experiences. The quality of work environment may persuade outstanding staff members to pursue other career options. Financial rewards of public accounting are not the basis for changes in the rating of staff

Plasmonics-active gold nanostars exhibiting strong imaging contrast and efficient photothermal transduction were synthesized for a novel pulsed laser-modulated plasmonics-enhanced brain tumor microvascular permeabilization. We demonstrate a selective, optically modulated delivery of nanoprobes into the tumor parenchyma with minimal off-target distribution
A cryogenic beam of refractory, chemically reactive molecules with expansion cooling
Cryogenically cooled buffer gas beam sources of the molecule thorium monoxide
(ThO) are optimized and characterized. Both helium and neon buffer gas sources
are shown to produce ThO beams with high flux, low divergence, low forward
velocity, and cold internal temperature for a variety of stagnation densities
and nozzle diameters. The beam operates with a buffer gas stagnation density of
~10^15-10^16 cm^-3 (Reynolds number ~1-100), resulting in expansion cooling of
the internal temperature of the ThO to as low as 2 K. For the neon (helium)
based source, this represents cooling by a factor of about 10 (2) from the
initial nozzle temperature of about 20 K (4 K). These sources deliver ~10^11
ThO molecules in a single quantum state within a 1-3 ms long pulse at 10 Hz
repetition rate. Under conditions optimized for a future precision spectroscopy
application [A C Vutha et al 2010 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 43 074007],
the neon-based beam has the following characteristics: forward velocity of 170
m/s, internal temperature of 3.4 K, and brightness of 3x10^11 ground state
molecules per steradian per pulse. Compared to typical supersonic sources, the
relatively low stagnation density of this source, and the fact that the cooling
mechanism relies only on collisions with an inert buffer gas, make it widely
applicable to many atomic and molecular species, including those which are
chemically reactive, such as ThO
Advanced cold molecule electron EDM
Measurement of a non-zero electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron within a few orders of magnitude of the current best limit of |d_e| < 1.05 × 10^(−27) e⋅cm [1] would be an indication of physics beyond the Standard Model. The ACME Collaboration is searching for an electron EDM by performing a precision measurement of electron spin precession in the metastable H^3Δ_1 state of thorium monoxide (ThO) using a slow, cryogenic beam. We discuss the current status of the experiment. Based on a data set acquired from 14 hours of running time over a period of 2 days, we have achieved a 1-sigma statistical uncertainty of δd_e = 1 × 10^(−28) e⋅cm/√T, where T is the running time in days
Bio-informatics assessment schema (BIAS) to improve myocardial perfusion image diagnostic and prognostic value: the NHLBI-sponsored women's ischemia syndrome evaluation (WISE) study
Introduction: When assessing myocardial perfusion image (MPI) data for diagnosis or prediction of prognosis it is common to evaluate the technology using a Receiver-Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve. The diagonal response represents the knowledge prior to conducting the test (i.e. the diagonal represents random chance). We present an approach termed Bio-Informatics Assessment Schema (BIAS) that provides an elevated baseline from which to evaluate the MPI reading, i.e. indicating that at baseline, more data is available than random chance. Here we describe how the BIAS formulae are generated for cardiovascular magnetic resonance image (CMRI) data applied to the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) Study
