The APM Galaxy Survey:- V. Catalogues of Galaxy Clusters

    Get PDF
We describe the construction of catalogues of galaxy clusters from the APM Galaxy survey using an automated algorithm based on Abell-like selection criteria. We investigate the effects of varying several parameters in our selection algorithm, including the magnitude range, and radius from the cluster centre used to estimate the cluster richnesses. We quantify the accuracy of the photometric distance estimates by comparing with measured redshifts, and we investigate the stability and completeness of the resulting catalogues. We find that the angular correlation functions for different cluster catalogues are in good agreement with one another, and are also consistent with the observed amplitude of the spatial correlation function of rich clusters.Comment: 14 pages, PostScript, including 15 figures, submitted to MNRAS. Community Partnerships for Older Adults: A Case Study

    Get PDF
Over the past several decades, federal policy has made states and communities increasingly more responsible for providing long-term care for older adults. The Community Partnerships for Older Adults, a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, saw this as an opportunity to explore new, sustainable ways to meet current and future needs for community-based long-term care. This initiative focuses on collaborative organizational partnerships, a distinctive philosophy of teaching and learning through the exchange of experience between communities, and program learning focusing on known factors promoting organizational sustainability. Using principles that emphasize the development of social capital and collective efficacy, the authors present a case study of the early experiences of this initiative to address the challenges inherent in meeting the growing supportive service needs of older adults. The implications of this multi-site community intervention for social work education and practice in aging are discussed

Sovereignty in English Political Thought 1576-1628

This thesis aims for the most part to give an updated analysis of the reception of Bodin's theory of sovereignty into English political thought before the personal rule of Charles I. The relevance of such a study for modern constitutionalism is in the delineation, both of Bodin's original concept, and of the versions of this concept adopted in England long before the time of Blackstone. While it is to be hoped that this elucidation will aid in the understanding of sovereignty today, care must he taken to recognise the limits of such studies. The elements of parliamentary sovereignty which present writers discuss include many which came into being centuries after Bodin's time, so that what we can expect to see in this early period is only a barebones theory of sovereignty. But it is also a minimalist statement of the architecture of the modern State in that it expresses a legal view of political supremacy
