Almost Sure Stabilization for Adaptive Controls of Regime-switching LQ Systems with A Hidden Markov Chain

This work is devoted to the almost sure stabilization of adaptive control systems that involve an unknown Markov chain. The control system displays continuous dynamics represented by differential equations and discrete events given by a hidden Markov chain. Different from previous work on stabilization of adaptive controlled systems with a hidden Markov chain, where average criteria were considered, this work focuses on the almost sure stabilization or sample path stabilization of the underlying processes. Under simple conditions, it is shown that as long as the feedback controls have linear growth in the continuous component, the resulting process is regular. Moreover, by appropriate choice of the Lyapunov functions, it is shown that the adaptive system is stabilizable almost surely. As a by-product, it is also established that the controlled process is positive recurrent

Complexation of Secondary Amides to Chromium(III): the X-Ray Structure of a Molecule with Two Modes of Monodentate Organic Amide Co-ordination

The X-ray crystal structure of the dimer [Cr{H(chba-Et)}(py)_2]_(2)·2py [H_(4)(chba-Et)= 1,2-bis(3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzamido) ethane, py = pyridine] establishes, for the first time, the existence of N-co-ordination of an organic amide to Cr^III, the N-atom and carbonyl O-atom of two separate amide groups being co-ordinated to each Cr^III centre [Cr–N 2.030(6) and Cr–O 1.976(5)Å]; the potentially tetra-anionic chelating ligand leads to a variety of co-ordination modes

Empagliflozin is associated with improvements in liver enzymes potentially consistent with reductions in liver fat: results from randomised trials including the EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial

Aims/hypothesis: In addition to beneficial effects on glycaemia and cardiovascular death, empagliflozin improves adiposity indices. We investigated the effect of empagliflozin on aminotransferases (correlates of liver fat) in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Changes from baseline alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were assessed in the EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial (n = 7020), pooled data from four 24-week placebo-controlled trials (n = 2477) and a trial of empagliflozin vs glimepiride over 104 weeks (n = 1545). Analyses were performed using data from all participants and by tertiles of baseline aminotransferases. Results: In the EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial, mean ± SE changes from baseline ALT at week 28 were −2.96 ± 0.18 and −0.73 ± 0.25 U/l with empagliflozin and placebo, respectively (adjusted mean difference: −2.22 [95% CI −2.83, −1.62]; p < 0.0001). Reductions in ALT were greatest in the highest ALT tertile (placebo-adjusted mean difference at week 28: −4.36 U/l [95% CI −5.51, −3.21]; p < 0.0001). The adjusted mean difference in change in ALT was −3.15 U/l (95% CI −4.11, −2.18) with empagliflozin vs placebo at week 24 in pooled 24-week data, and −4.88 U/l (95% CI −6.68, −3.09) with empagliflozin vs glimepiride at week 28. ALT reductions were largely independent of changes in weight or HbA1c. AST changes showed similar patterns to ALT, but the reductions were considerably lower. Conclusions/interpretation: These highly consistent results suggest that empagliflozin reduces aminotransferases in individuals with type 2 diabetes, in a pattern (reductions in ALT>AST) that is potentially consistent with a reduction in liver fat, especially when ALT levels are high

Stefan Zweig was the only important German writer who chose Brazil for his exile in the 1940s. Before he committed suicide in Brazil, he wrote the frequently cited and more frequently criticized book in which Brazil is called the land of the future. But in Brazil he also finished another book, 'Die Welt von Gestern', a book of memories, an account of the world from which Zweig came, a work of historic, cultural and political relevance, which was immediately published in Spanish (Argentine) and Portuguese (Brazilian) translations. When compared with the German original, these translations contain significant cuts and modifications, which can be understood as interventions of some kind of censorship, and which are prejudicial to the political brisance of the book.Stefan Zweig foi o único autor relevante de língua alemã que, na decada de quarenta do século passado, escolheu o Brasil para o seu exílio. Neste país ele veio a cometer suicídio.

THE DURABILITY OF ADHESION OF POLYSULFIDE SEALANTS TO GLASS

    Get PDF
A number of polysulfide based sealants similar to those used commercially in insulated glass manufacture were prepared and used in this programme of work. The formulations were designed to cover the spectrum of formulations sold commercially, especially with respect to polymer content, and to this end a number of commercial sealants were tested in order to ensure comparability. The sealants were tested in glass/ sealant/ glass joints and examined for changes in joint strength and adhesion properties. Films of the sealant were subjected to the same ageing conditions and their physical properties checked. The rate of change of adhesion properties was compared with the diffusion of water vapour into the cured films as measured by mass uptake experiments. The mode of failure was noted. The changes were also examined chemically by surface analysis and the results examined for a relationship between formulation changes , such as polymer content , with diffusion rate which in turn could be related to onset of adhesion bond loss. The results show that the primary cause of adhesion failure is plasticiser migration to the interface causing weakening of the interface and eventual adhesion failure. The diffusion of water into the sealant mass in the joints plasticises the sealant causing a lowering of the modulus of the sealant and creating the thermodynamic conditions to cause plasticiser migration.Directors of Morton International Lt

The effects of trichinosis upon certain excretory products, the adrenals, blood, activity and fur of mesocricetus auratus.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThe aims of this research were to measure the "stress" produced in the golden hamster (Hesocricetus auratus) by an experimental infection with Trichinella spiralis, to chart the gradual development of accord between host and parasite, and thirdly, to note any correlations between the urinary and adrenal changes caused by the "stress". The tests used for measuring the stress were: the urinary uric acid/creatinine ratio, the adrenal weight, adrenal ascorbic acid, adrenal non-specific dehydrogenase activity, adrenal sudanophilic lipids, alkaline phosphatase , and birefringence. The urine volume, pH, creatine excretion, and the diazo reaction were also studied
