Functional health literacy of parents/caregivers and health outcomes of children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus: A scoping review
Objective: To map studies evaluating the functional health literacy (FHL) of parents/caregivers and the health outcomes of children and adolescents with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Introduction: Parents/caregivers play a crucial role in managing DM in children and adolescents. The FHL of parents/caregivers significantly influences the health outcomes of these children and adolescents. Despite the importance of the topic, there is a scarcity of research on this subject in Brazil. Inclusion criteria: Studies will be included whose participants are parents/caregivers of children and adolescents with DM, with the concept being FHL and the context being health outcomes in children and adolescents with DM (glycemic control and quality of life). Methods: This is a scoping review that will adhere to the JBI methodology for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. A comprehensive search will be conducted across the electronic databases Medline (PubMed), Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, Cinahl (EBSCO), PsycINFO, Lilacs, and Scielo. Gray literature sources will also be consulted, along with reference lists of selected studies. Original studies on the relationship between FHL of parents/caregivers and the health outcomes of children and adolescents with DM will be included. Two independent researchers will conduct selection of studies, screening titles, abstracts, and full texts against eligibility criteria, with discrepancies resolved by a third researcher. Data will be presented descriptively
