An Econometric Analysis of MMS Area-Wide Leasing Versus Tract-Nomination Sales: Does Area-Wide Leasing Result in Lower Government Revenue?

    Get PDF
In 1983, US Minerals Management Service (MMS) switched from the Lease Nomination sale format to Area-Wide Leasing (AWL). Since a complete econometric analysis of the effects of AWL on government revenue has not been conducted in almost twenty years, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of AWL on government revenue. Results indicated that AWL reduced government revenue by 1,170to1,170 to 1,308 on a per acre basis, which is consistent with the findings in prior literature.Area-Wide Leasing (AWL), Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), High Bonus Bids, Environmental Economics and Policy, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

USING THE RANDOM PARAMETERS LOGIT MODEL TO COMBINE REVEALED AND STATED PREFERENCE DATA

Recent literature has combined Revealed (RP) and Stated Preference (SP) data in the Multinomial Logit Model (MNL) to estimate the value of environmental goods. However, emerging research has identified that a limitation of the MNL is the assumption of Independently and Identically Distributed (IID) errors, resulting in inaccurate model predictions and inconsistent utility parameters. Our analysis applies an alternative method to combine RP and SP data that takes into account the heterogeneity in both the observable and unobservable components of utility. This allows us to test whether such heterogeneity has an important effect on predicting behavioral choices.Revealed and Stated Preference Data, Scale Factor, Environmental Economics and Policy,

Recent studies have suggested that green technologies may be a cost effective way to manage urban runoff. Literature has also suggests that there needs to be a greater empirical basis to estimate the benefits associated with social values associated with urban trees; we therefore estimate ecosystem benefits of green technologies using emerging data enrichment valuation methods.Environmental Economics and Policy,

Automotive Threat Assessment Design for Combined Braking and Steering Maneuvers

The active safety systems available on the passenger cars market today, automatically deploy automated safety interventions in situations where the driver is in need of assistance. In this paper, we consider the process of determining whether such interventions are needed. In particular, we design a threat assessment method which evaluates the risk that the vehicle will either leave the road or its maneuverability will be significantly reduced within a finite time horizon. The proposed threat assessment method accounts for combined braking and steering maneuvers, which results in a nonlinear dynamical vehicle behavior. We formulate the threat assessment problem as a nonconvex constraint satisfaction problem and implement an algorithm that solves it through interval-based consistency techniques. Experimental validation of the proposed approach indicates that constraint violation can be predicted, while avoiding the detection of false threats

Combining Revealed and Stated Preference Data to Estimate the Nonmarket Value of Ecological Services: An Assessment of the State of the Science

    Get PDF
This paper reviews the marketing, transportation, and environmental economics literature on the joint estimation of revealed and stated preference data. The revealed preference and stated preference approaches are first described with a focus on the strengths and weaknesses of each. Recognizing these strengths and weaknesses, the potential gains from combining data are described. A classification system for combined data that emphasizes the type of data combination and the econometric models used is proposed. A methodological review of the literature is pursued based on this classification system. Examples from the environmental economics literature are highlighted. A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of jointly estimated model is then presented. Suggestions for future research, in particular opportunities for application of these models to environmental quality valuation, are presented.Nonmarket Valuation, Revealed Preference, Stated Preference

Tais resultados sugerem um papel estratégico desse tipo de atividade na busca da Promoção à Saúde e na consolidação do SUSAbstract: The Brazilian Sanitary Reform, strongly influenced by the ideals of Health Promotion, has as a basic conception the health as central agent in the transformation of the life conditions and in the reduction of the social iniquities. This conception implicates in the perception of the health as dependent of the worthy access to a minimum conditions of work, wage, home, feeding, sanitation, transport, leisure and education. To overcome the difficulties of theoretical and practical order in looking for these objectives, has been seeking strategies that give support of implementing SUS within of the integral principles, social participation, universality and justness, efficiency and effectiveness of the actions, and in the valorization of the workers' section. Starting from this context we accomplished a research of qualitative type that looked to analyze the process of development of Education in Health activities accomplished by multiprofessional teams in a health school center, located in Campinas-SP, with views to obtain an approach of the possibilities and limits observed in this type of approach for Health Promotion. For us to reach this purpose we did the description and analysis of these practices, through dialectical-hermeneutic method, conjugating techniques of documental research and the technicians' depositions and users of this service involved in this process. At last we concluded that the experiences in the study presented a good result in the maintenance of the life conditions and the users' health, for the educational-assistencial practice and in the attendance of the purposes of the service in subject. These results suggest a strategic paper of this activity type in the search of Health Promotion and in the consolidation of SUSMestradoSaude ColetivaMestre em Saude Coletiv

The Effect of Water Temperature on Tiger Shark Location

    Get PDF
The tiger shark is a keystone species in its ecosystem. As an apex predator, the tiger shark keeps the entire ecosystem in balance such as maintaining seagrass and coral reef habitats. The rise of ocean surface temperatures have become an issue over the past decades due to the increase in energy from the sun trapped by greenhouse grasses. This change in ocean surface temperature can have detrimental impacts on the ocean environment and the life cycles of many species including the tiger shark. Therefore, this project evaluates the change in location of tiger sharks in relation to water temperature

This paper deals with a study on Brazilian south coast continental shelf demersal fish fauna distribution and Sciaenidae ecology, comprising the latitudes between Torres (29º21'S -49º44'W) and Chuí (33º41'S - 53º27'W). The data on oceanographic as well as on ichthyological variables were obtained from six cruises planned to cover all seasons during the period from April 1968 to March 1969. The variation of the physical conditions of the bottom water layer is studied covering temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and type of bottom. The demersal fish families distribution is presented according to its frequencies of occurrence and its particular abundance. As Sciaenidae family shows to be the most important predominant group each species is studied in detail with reference to its distribution and relative abundance, as well as its spatial and temporal variations according to the abiotic environment. Relationship between Sciaenidae species is also discussed concerning feeding habits and the Cole coefficient of inter-specific association is estimated for pairs of species

Robust fault detection using consistency techniques for uncertainty handling

Often practical performance of analytical redundancy for fault detection and diagnosis is decreased by uncertainties prevailing not only in the system model, but also in the measurements. In this paper, the problem of fault detection is stated as a constraint satisfaction problem over continuous domains with a big number of variables and constraints. This problem can be solved using modal interval analysis and consistency techniques. Consistency techniques are then shown to be particularly efficient to check the consistency of the analytical redundancy relations (ARRs), dealing with uncertain measurements and parameters. Through the work presented in this paper, it can be observed that consistency techniques can be used to increase the performance of a robust fault detection tool, which is based on interval arithmetic. The proposed method is illustrated using a nonlinear dynamic model of a hydraulic syste

Objective: To develop and validate a very brief version of the 24-item Real Relationship Inventory–Client (RRI-C) form.Method: Two independent samples of individual psychotherapy patients (Nsample1=700, Nsample2=434) completed the RRI-C along with other measures. Psychometric scale shortening involved exploratory factor analysis, item response theory analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and multigroup CFA. Reliability and convergent and discriminant validity of the scale and subscales were also assessed. Results: The 8-item RRI-C (RRI-C-SF) preserves the two-factor structure: Genuineness (k=4, α=.86) and Realism (k=4, α=.87), which were correlated at r=.74. CFA provided the following fit indices for the bifactor model: X2/df=2.16, CFI=.99, TLI=.96, RMSEA=.07, and SRMR=.03. Multigroup CFA showed that the RRI-C-SF was invariant across in-person and remote session formats. The RRI-C-SF demonstrated high reliability (α=.91); high correlation with the full-length scale (r=.96); and excellent convergent and discriminant validity with measures of other elements of the therapeutic relationship, personality characteristics, current mental health state, and demographic-clinical variables. Clinical change benchmarks were calculated to serve as valuable tools for both research and clinical practice. Conclusion: The RRI-C-SF is a reliable measure that can be used for both research and clinical purposes. It enables a nuanced assessment of the genuineness and the realism dimensions of the real relationship
