Magnetoresistance of metallic perovskite oxide LaNiO3−δ_{3-\delta}

Full text link
We report a study of the magnetoresistance (MR) of the metallic perovskite oxide LaNiO3−δ_{3-\delta} as a function of the oxygen stoichiometry δ\delta (δ≤\delta \leq 0.14), magnetic field (H ≤6T\leq 6T) and temperature (1.5K ≤\leq T ≤\leq 25K). We find a strong dependence of the nature of MR on the oxygen stoichiometry. The MR at low temperatures change from positive to negative as the sample becomes more oxygen deficient (i.e, δ\delta increases). Some of the samples which are more resistive, show a resistivity minima at TminT_{min} ≈\approx 20K. We find that in these samples the MR is positive at T > TminT_{min} and negative for T < TminT_{min}. We conclude that in the absence of strong magnetic interaction, the negative MR in these oxides can arise from weak localisation effects.Comment: 10 pages in REVTeX format, 4 eps fig

Writing a Life Between Gender Lines Conversations with A. Revathi about her autobiography The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life Story

A. Revathi was born physiologically male but felt and behaved like a girl - this is how she tells her story, as will be clear from the interview below. Nearly her whole childhood, spent in a village in Salem district of Tamil Nadu, was plagued by this deep and nagging unease of being trapped in the wrong body and by 'a growing sense of irrepressible femaleness'. But when she behaved like one of her girl-playmates, it only meant repeated humiliation and violence by her family and community. This affected her academic performance, and she had to drop out of school after failing the tenth grade. In a quest to be true to herself, Revathi, still in her teens, ran away from home and travelled to Delhi to join a house of hijras. Hijras are male-to-female transsexuals who undergo a surgical removal of the genitals (often performed surreptitiously and in unsanitary conditions) and comprise a distinct community across India with elaborate customs and regulations of their own. Hijras are given ritualistic importance by mainstream Indian society (for instance, their blessings are considered to bring good fortune) but at the same time they are easy targets for sexual crimes, discriminated against in public spaces, and have few options for livelihood apart from performing at social events, begging or prostitution. Revathi, now in her mid-forties, discusses all this with remarkable candour and courage in her autobiography The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life Story, translated into English from Tamil by V. Geetha and published by Penguin India Books in 2010. This autobiography is among the very first of its kind in India, uninhibited with regard to divisive gender lines, sexual hypocrisy of 'traditional' societies, and the dismal lack of public discourse on the rights of sexual minorities

Mitigating Hotspot Problem Using Chaotic Salp Swarm Algorithm for Energy Efficient IoT Assisted Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT) continued to be pro-active study due to their far reaching applications and also a crucial technology for ubiquitous living. In WSN, energy awareness becomes a significant design problem. Clustering can be defined as a renowned energy-efficient method and renders a lot of benefits like energy competence, less delay, scalability, and lifetime; but it resulted in hot spot problems. To sort out this problem a method called unequal clustering is designed. In unequal clustering, the cluster size differs with the Base Station (BS) distance. In this study, a new Chaotic Salp Swarm Algorithm Based Unequal Clustering Approach (CSSA-UCA) methodology to resolve hot spot issues in IoT-assisted WSN is proposed. The major objective of the CSSA-UCA methodology lies in the effectual identification of CHs and unequal cluster sizes. To accomplish this, the CSSA-UCA technique initially derives the CSSA by the incorporation of chaotic notions into the conventional SSA. At the same time, a fitness function incorporating multiple input parameters was considered for unequal cluster construction. A wide range of experimental result analyses is performed to exhibit the supremacy of the CSSA-UCA technique. The experimental results stated that the CSSA-UCA technique proficiently balances energy accretion and improves the network lifetime

In the title compound, C17H16N2·H2O, the imidazole ring is essentially planar [maximum deviation = 0.0037 (7) Å]. The imidazole ring makes dihedral angles of 80.74 (7) and 41.62 (7)° with the phenyl rings attached to the N and C atoms, respectively. The dihedral angle between the two phenyl rings is 75.83 (8)°. Intermolecular O—H⋯N and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds are found in the crystal structure
