Stabilisation of Red Phosphorus to Prevent Moisture Absorptionand Suppression of Phosphine Release

    Get PDF
Red phosphorus (RP) is an essential ingredient to generate smoke for multi-spectralobscuration and is receiving wide attention throughout the world for military applications. However, oxidation of phosphorus occurs in moist air resulting in the formation of variousphosphorus acids and subsequently the evolution of the toxic gas, phosphine (PH3), even inthe sealed systems. Entrapped moisture leads to deterioration of the stores. The commercial-RPat ambient temperature and 95 per cent  RH conditions indicates 15 per cent  moisture absorptionand 13 per cent acidity development with the generation of more than 100 ppm of phosphinegas. Efforts were made to overcome this problem by suppressing acid formation. The technologyadopted was: (i) use of stabiliser, and (ii) doping stabiliser-coated particles with polymericsubstance. The aim to use metal oxide as stabiliser was to neutralise the phosphorus acids, which are catalysing the phosphine generation. MgO due to its basic nature seems to be fasterthan amphoteric Al2O3, in removing the acid from site of reaction, thus suppressing the phosphinerelease effectively. Though MgCO3 as stabiliser suppresses moisture absorption and aciditydevelopment, phosphine release is not controlled effectively. Study of RP coated with thesematerials independently and monitoring them at different RH conditions indicated superiorityof MgO in suppressing acidity and phosphine formation

Reentrant peak effect and melting of a flux line lattice in 2H-NbSe2

    Get PDF
A reentrant peak effect is observed through low field ac susceptibility measurements on the weakly pinned flux line lattice in single crystals of 2H-Nb Se2. The resulting phase diagram of the peak effect is strikingly similar to the theoretically predicted reentrant phase boundary which separates flux lattice and flux liquid phases. The broadening and ultimate disappearance of the peak effect at very low fields is consistent with the predicted crossover to a disordered glassy state in this field regime

Nanocrystals of metals, semiconductors and oxides: novel synthesis and applications

    Get PDF
Films of nanocrystals such as Au, Ag and Pd, semiconducting sulphides such as CdS, ZnS and CoS, and oxides such as Fe2O3 and CuO have been prepared by employing reactions at liquid-liquid (organic-aqueous) interfaces. In this method, a suitable organic derivative of the metal taken in the organic layer reacts at the interface with the appropriate reagent present in the organic layer. Two typical applications of nanocrystals pertaining to magnetic devices and dip-pen lithography are briefly presented

Combination Versus Monotherapy for Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter Species Serious Infections: A Prospective IPTW Adjusted Cohort Study

Introduction: International guidelines recommend definitive combination antibiotic therapy for the management of serious infections involving carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter (CRAB) species. The commonly available combination options include high-dose sulbactam, polymyxins, tetracyclines, and cefiderocol. Scanty prospective data exist to support this approach. Methods: Patients with CRAB bacteraemia, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), or both were categorized based on whether they received combination therapy or monotherapy. The 30-day mortality was compared between the two groups. Inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW) was done using propensity score (PS) for a balanced comparison between groups. Results: Between January 2021 and May 2023, of the 161 patients with CRAB bacteraemia (n = 55, 34.2%), VAP (n = 46, 28.6%), or both (n = 60, 37.3%) who received appropriate intravenous antibiotic therapy, 70% (112/161) received monotherapy, and the rest received combination therapy. The overall 30-day mortality was 62% (99/161) and not different (p = 0.76) between the combination therapy (31/49, 63.3%) and monotherapy (68/112, 60.7%) groups. The propensity score matching using IPTW did not show a statistical difference (p = 0.47) in 30-day mortality for receiving combination therapy with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) P of 1.29 (0.64, 2.58). Conclusion: Combination therapy for CRAB infections needs further study in a randomised controlled trial, as this observational study showed no difference in 30-day mortality between monotherapy and combination therapy

Socio-Demographic Patterning of Physical Activity across Migrant Groups in India: Results from the Indian Migration Study

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between rural to urban migration and physical activity (PA) in India. METHODS: 6,447 (42% women) participants comprising 2077 rural, 2,094 migrants and 2,276 urban were recruited. Total activity (MET hr/day), activity intensity (min/day), PA Level (PAL) television viewing and sleeping (min/day) were estimated and associations with migrant status examined, adjusting for the sib-pair design, age, site, occupation, education, and socio-economic position (SEP). RESULTS: Total activity was highest in rural men whereas migrant and urban men had broadly similar activity levels (p<0.001). Women showed similar patterns, but slightly lower levels of total activity. Sedentary behaviour and television viewing were lower in rural residents and similar in migrant and urban groups. Sleep duration was highest in the rural group and lowest in urban non-migrants. Migrant men had considerably lower odds of being in the highest quartile of total activity than rural men, a finding that persisted after adjustment for age, SEP and education (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.37, 0.74). For women, odds ratios attenuated and associations were removed after adjusting for age, SEP and education. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that migrants have already acquired PA levels that closely resemble long-term urban residents. Effective public health interventions to increase PA are needed

Performance of novel VUV-sensitive Silicon Photo-Multipliers for nEXO

Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ\nu \beta \beta), due to their response uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses, and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for 0νββ\nu \beta \beta of \ce{^{136}Xe} with projected half-life sensitivity of 1.35×10281.35\times 10^{28}~yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is \leq1\% energy resolution at the decay QQ-value (2458.07±0.312458.07\pm 0.31~keV). Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3 SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon temperature (163~K). The results from this study are used to provide updated estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay QQ-value for the nEXO design

Identification of causes of death and contemporary risk factors for all-cause mortality may guide interventions. Methods and Results-In the Rivaroxaban Once Daily Oral Direct Factor Xa Inhibition Compared with Vitamin K Antagonism for Prevention of Stroke and Embolism Trial in Atrial Fibrillation (ROCKET AF) study, patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation were randomized to rivaroxaban or dose-adjusted warfarin. Cox proportional hazards regression with backward elimination identified factors at randomization that were independently associated with all-cause mortality in the 14 171 participants in the intention-to-treat population. The median age was 73 years, and the mean CHADS(2) score was 3.5. Over 1.9 years of median follow-up, 1214 (8.6%) patients died. Kaplan-Meier mortality rates were 4.2% at 1 year and 8.9% at 2 years. The majority of classified deaths (1081) were cardiovascular (72%), whereas only 6% were nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. No significant difference in all-cause mortality was observed between the rivaroxaban and warfarin arms (P=0.15).
