Comments on AdS2 solutions of D=11 Supergravity
We study the supersymmetric solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity with a
factor of made of M2-branes. Such solutions can provide gravity duals
of superconformal quantum mechanics, or through double Wick rotation, the
generic bubbling geometry of M-theory which are 1/16-BPS. We show that, when
the internal manifold is compact, it should take the form of a warped
U(1)-fibration over an 8-dimensional Kahler space.Comment: 11 pages, no figure, JHEP3.cl
Geometries with Killing Spinors and Supersymmetric AdS Solutions
The seven and nine dimensional geometries associated with certain classes of
supersymmetric and solutions of type IIB and D=11 supergravity,
respectively, have many similarities with Sasaki-Einstein geometry. We further
elucidate their properties and also generalise them to higher odd dimensions by
introducing a new class of complex geometries in dimensions, specified
by a Riemannian metric, a scalar field and a closed three-form, which admit a
particular kind of Killing spinor. In particular, for , we show that
when the geometry in dimensions is a cone we obtain a class of
geometries in dimensions, specified by a Riemannian metric, a scalar
field and a closed two-form, which includes the seven and nine-dimensional
geometries mentioned above when , respectively. We also consider various
ansatz for the geometries and construct infinite classes of explicit examples
for all .Comment: 28 page
On the smoothness of the multi-BMPV black hole spacetime
We demonstrate that, in a multi-BMPV black hole spacetime, the event horizon
is not smooth. We explicitly show that for a simpler configuration comprising a
line of static extremal black holes and a single BMPV black hole, the metric at
the horizon of the BMPV black hole is once, but not twice, continuously
differentiable. We argue that this result is also valid when all the black
holes are rotating. The Maxwell field strength is shown to be continuous, but
not differentiable at the horizon. We also briefly demonstrate that previous
work done to show lack of smoothness of static multi-centre solutions in five
dimensions is not significantly modified by the inclusion of a higher
derivative term in the action for five dimensional supergravity.Comment: 17 pages; reference adde
Flowing with Eight Supersymmetries in M-Theory and F-theory
We consider holographic RG flow solutions with eight supersymmetries and
study the geometry transverse to the brane. For both M2-branes and for
D3-branes in F-theory this leads to an eight-manifold with only a four-form
flux. In both settings there is a natural four-dimensional hyper-Kahler slice
that appears on the Coulomb branch. In the IIB theory this hyper-Kahler
manifold encodes the Seiberg-Witten coupling over the Coulomb branch of a U(1)
probe theory. We focus primarily upon a new flow solution in M-theory. This
solution is first obtained using gauged supergravity and then lifted to eleven
dimensions. In this new solution, the brane probes have an Eguchi-Hanson moduli
space with the M2-branes spread over the non-trivial 2-sphere. It is also shown
that the new solution is valid for a class of orbifold theories. We discuss how
the hyper-Kahler structure on the slice extends to some form of G-structure in
the eight-manifold, and describe how this can be computed.Comment: 29 pages, 1 figure, harvma
Toward NS5 Branes on the Resolved Cone over Y^{p,q}
Motivated by recent developments in the understanding of the connection
between five branes on resolved geometries and the corresponding
generalizations of complex deformations in the context of the warped resolved
deformed conifold, we consider the construction of five branes solutions on the
resolved cone over Y^{p,q} spaces. We establish the existence of supersymmetric
five branes solutions wrapped on two-cycles of the resolved cone over Y^{p,q}
in the probe limit. We then use calibration techniques to begin the
construction of fully back-reacted five branes; we present an Ansatz and the
corresponding equations of motion. Our results establish a detailed framework
to study back-reacted five branes wrapped on the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} and
as a first step we find explicit solutions and construct an asymptotic
expansion with the expected properties.Comment: 23+17pp, no figures; v2: references added, various clarification
Supersymmetric AdS_3, AdS_2 and Bubble Solutions
We present new supersymmetric AdS_3 solutions of type IIB supergravity and
AdS_2 solutions of D=11 supergravity. The former are dual to conformal field
theories in two dimensions with N=(0,2) supersymmetry while the latter are dual
to conformal quantum mechanics with two supercharges. Our construction also
includes AdS_2 solutions of D=11 supergravity that have non-compact internal
spaces which are dual to three-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories
coupled to point-like defects. We also present some new bubble-type solutions,
corresponding to BPS states in conformal theories, that preserve four
supersymmetries.Comment: v2: 33 pages, published version in JHE
Beyond LLM in M-theory
The Lin, Lunin, Maldacena (LLM) ansatz in D = 11 supports two independent
Killing directions when a general Killing spinor ansatz is considered. Here we
show that these directions always commute, identify when the Killing spinors
are charged, and show that both their inner product and resulting geometry are
governed by two fundamental constants. In particular, setting one constant to
zero leads to AdS7 x S4, setting the other to zero gives AdS4 x S7, while flat
spacetime is recovered when both these constants are zero. Furthermore, when
the constants are equal, the spacetime is either LLM, or it corresponds to the
Kowalski-Glikman solution where the constants are simply the mass parameter.Comment: 1+30 pages, footnote adde
From Marginal Deformations to Confinement
We consider type IIB supergravity backgrounds which describe marginal
deformations of the Coulomb branch of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with SO(4) x
SO(2) global symmetry. Wilson loop calculations indicate that certain
deformations enhance the Coulombic attraction between quarks and anti-quarks at
the UV conformal fixed-point. In the IR region, these deformations can induce a
transition to linear confinement.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, minor corrections, comments and references adde
Semiclassical strings in marginally deformed toric AdS/CFT
We study string solutions in the beta-deformed Sasaki-Einstein gauge/gravity
dualities. We find that the BPS point-like strings move in the submanifolds
where the two U(1) circles shrink to zero size. In the corresponding T^3
fibration description, the strings live on the edges of the polyhedron, where
the T^3 fibration degenerates to T^1. Moreover, we find that for each deformed
Sasaki-Einstein manifold the BPS string solutions exist only for particular
values of the deformation parameter. Our results imply that in the dual field
theory the corresponding BPS operators exist only for these particular values
of the deformation parameter we find. We also examine the non-BPS strings,
derive their dispersion relations and compare them with the undeformed ones.
Finally, we comment on the range of the validity of our solutions and their
dependence on the deformation parameter.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure
