    Ready, Set, Network! Research Speed Networking for Clinicians, Scientists and Engineers

    Objectives: A 2013 Institute of Medicine report urged researchers to “engage in additional substantive and productive collaborations” to address important clinical/translational science questions. To encourage team science among our researchers, Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences and Center for Clinical and Translational Research hosted a speed networking event, specifically targeting engineers, clinicians, and basic scientists; an analysis of the event is below. Methods: Invitations were distributed to clinicians, engineers, and basic scientists. To maximize interactions without increasing time spent at the event, researchers were divided into three groups. The event was planned such that each group would meet everyone from the other two groups; researchers were placed into appropriate groups according to their interests. Seated at tables of three, attendees introduced themselves and discussed their research interests for three minutes; then they rotated according to their group’s instructions. Lunch was provided afterwards to give attendees an opportunity to follow up with potential collaborators. Results: Twenty-one faculty researchers attended the speed networking event, which took about 30 minutes, excluding lunch. Using a 5-point Likert scale, all participants selected “strongly agree” or “agree” to respond to questions about whether the event was a valuable use of their time. Also, 53% of attendees “strongly” agreed with the statement “I met a potential collaborator” at the event. Discussion: Subjective evaluations show that researchers see speed networking as an effective way to meet potential collaborators. Objective data including sustained research partnerships and collaborative grant and publication submissions will be tracked

    Selection procedures which favor whites mean that racial minorities are significantly underrepresented on juries

    A disproportionately high number of criminal defendants are black and Latino, and yet trial juries tend to be mostly white. In new research into how juries are made up in a southeastern state, Jacinta M. Gau finds that more than 60 percent of juries were majority-white. She writes that this lack of minority representation on juries is likely down to their under representation on master lists, and other barriers such as work and childcare conflicts. According to her research, blacks, Hispanics and Asians were also more likely to be struck from the jury pool for causes such as economic or family hardship. The results also indicate that although blacks are disproportionately struck peremptorily by the prosecution, whites are disproportionately struck by the defense, and the countervailing effects neutralize each other overall

    Purification and partial characterization of an extracellular melanoprotein from the fungus Venturia inaequalis

    The fungus Venturia inaequalis clone No. 36 isolated from Malus domestica cv. Gloster excretes a melanoprotein of 36 kDa in relatively high amounts during growth in liquid culture. The protein was isolated from the culture medium and purified to homogeneity. It was shown to contain melanin. After raising an antiserum against the isolated protein, the protein could be shown to be located in the apoplast fluid of the V. inaequalis infected Malus domestica cv. Elstar. Partial sequencing of the protein revealed no significant sequence homologies to so far sequenced proteins. The melanoprotein binds ferrous and ferric iron. Moreover, it could be shown that the binding of ferric iron (but not of ferrous iron) leads to a change in the absorbance of the protein suggesting a modification of the protein by ferric, but not by ferrous, iron. In addition to iron, the protein also binds copper, but does not bind manganese or nickel. A possible function of this protein in the recruiting and transport of iron and copper and/or in the protection of the fungus by metal-ion mediated oxidative stress is discussed. © 2005 Verlag der Zeitschrift fĂŒr Naturforschung

Gau explore the effects of military service on veterans’ involvement with the criminal justice system, finding that among prison inmates, military service is linked to fewer lifetime arrests, with those that served longer having fewer arrests

But do black officers have an advantage over white officers in building relationships with black citizens? In new research which examines police–community relations in East St. Louis, Jacinta M. Gau and Rod K. Brunson find that the black community expressed concern over under-policing, slow response times, and police misconduct both on and off duty, even though the city’s police department also reflected the population’s black majority

    Up-regulation of pathogenesis-related proteins in the apoplast of Malus domestica after application of a non-pathogenic bacterium

    The intercellular washing fluid (IWF) of Malus domestica cv. Holsteiner Cox before and after application of the non-pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens Bk3 to the leaves was investigated in a comparative manner. SDS-PAGE in combination with ESI Q-ToF mass spectrometry, and homology search in relevant data bases revealed the highly up-regulated expression of several pathogenesis-related plant proteins in the apoplast of the leaves treated with P. fluorescens. These proteins were ÎČ-1,3-glucanase, chitinase, thaumatin-like protein, ribonuclease-like protein, and a hevein-like protein. Moreover, a 9 kDa non-specific lipid transfer protein was significantly reduced after the application of P. fluorescens. The possible relevance of a pre-treatment of apple cultivars with the non-pathogenic bacterium P. fluorescens Bk3, as an alternative method to the treatment with fungicides, for increasing the resistance of susceptible apple cultivars against an infection with the fungus Venturia inaequalis is discussed

    Limits on the anomalous magnetic moment and the electric dipole moment of the τ\tau lepton are calculated through the reaction e+e−→τ+Ï„âˆ’Îłe^{+}e^{-}\to \tau^+ \tau^- \gamma at the Z1Z_1-pole and in the framework of a left-right symmetric model. The results are based on the recent data reported by the L3 Collaboration at CERN LEP. Due to the stringent limit of the model mixing angle ϕ\phi, the effect of this angle on the dipole moments is quite small.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Templeting of Thin Films Induced by Dewetting on Patterned Surfaces

    The instability, dynamics and morphological transitions of patterns in thin liquid films on periodic striped surfaces (consisting of alternating less and more wettable stripes) are investigated based on 3-D nonlinear simulations that account for the inter-site hydrodynamic and surface-energetic interactions. The film breakup is suppressed on some potentially destabilizing nonwettable sites when their spacing is below a characteristic lengthscale of the instability, the upper bound for which is close to the spinodal lengthscale. The thin film pattern replicates the substrate surface energy pattern closely only when, (a) the periodicity of substrate pattern matches closely with the characteristic lengthscale, and (b) the stripe-width is within a range bounded by a lower critical length, below which no heterogeneous rupture occurs, and an upper transition length above which complex morphological features bearing little resemblance to the substrate pattern are formed.Comment: 5 pages TeX (REVTeX 4), other comments: submitted to Phys.
