Variability of Active Galactic Nuclei from the Optical to X-ray Regions
Some progress in understanding AGN variability is reviewed. Reprocessing of
X-ray radiation to produce significant amounts of longer-wavelength continua
seems to be ruled out. In some objects where there has been correlated X-ray
and optical variability, the amplitude of the optical variability has exceeded
the amplitude of X-ray variability. We suggest that accelerated particles
striking material could be linking X-ray and optical variability (as in
activity in the solar chromosphere). Beaming effects could be significant in
all types of AGN. The diversity in optical/X-ray relationships at different
times in the same object, and between different objects, might be explained by
changes in geometry and directions of motion relative to our line of sight.
Linear shot-noise models of the variability are ruled out; instead there must
be large-scale organization of variability. Variability occurs on
light-crossing timescales rather than viscous timescales and this probably
rules out the standard Shakura-Sunyaev accretion disk. Radio-loud and
radio-quiet AGNs have similar continuum shapes and similar variability
properties. This suggests similar continuum origins and variability mechanisms.
Despite their extreme X-ray variability, narrow-line Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) do not

Hole polaron formation and migration in olivine phosphate materials
By combining first principles calculations and experimental XPS measurements,
we investigate the electronic structure of potential Li-ion battery cathode
materials LiMPO4 (M=Mn,Fe,Co,Ni) to uncover the underlying mechanisms that
determine small hole polaron formation and migration. We show that small hole
polaron formation depends on features in the electronic structure near the
valence-band maximum and that, calculationally, these features depend on the
methodology chosen for dealing with the correlated nature of the
transition-metal d-derived states in these systems. Comparison with experiment
reveals that a hybrid functional approach is superior to GGA+U in correctly
reproducing the XPS spectra. Using this approach we find that LiNiPO4 cannot
support small hole polarons, but that the other three compounds can. The
migration barrier is determined mainly by the strong or weak bonding nature of
the states at the top of the valence band, resulting in a substantially higher
barrier for LiMnPO4 than for LiCoPO4 or LiFePO4
Collective dynamics of liquid aluminum probed by Inelastic X-ray Scattering
An inelastic X-ray scattering experiment has been performed in liquid
aluminum with the purpose of studying the collective excitations at wavevectors
below the first sharp diffraction peak. The high instrumental resolution (up to
1.5 meV) allows an accurate investigation of the dynamical processes in this
liquid metal on the basis of a generalized hydrodynamics framework. The
outcoming results confirm the presence of a viscosity relaxation scenario ruled
by a two timescale mechanism, as recently found in liquid lithium.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Pressure induced structural and dynamical changes in liquid Si. An ab-initio study
The static and dynamic properties of liquid Si at high-pressure have been
studied using the orbital free ab-initio molecular dynamics method. Four
thermodynamic states at pressures 4, 8, 14 and 23 GPa are considered. The
calculated static structure shows qualitative agreement with the available
experimental data. We analize the remarkable structural changes occurring

The Case for Optically-Thick High Velocity Broad Line Region Gas in Active Galactic Nuclei
A combined analysis of the profiles of the main broad quasar emission lines
in both Hubble Space Telescope and optical spectra shows that while the
profiles of the strong UV lines are quite similar, there is frequently a strong
increase in the Ly-alpha/H-alpha ratio in the high-velocity gas. We show that
the suggestion that the high velocity gas is optically-thin presents many
problems. We show that the relative strengths of the high velocity wings arise
naturally in an optically-thick BLR component. An optically-thick model
successfully explains the equivalent widths of the lines, the Ly-alpha/H-alpha
ratios and flatter Balmer decrements in the line wings, the strengths of CIII]
and the lambda 1400 blend, and the strong variability of high-velocity,

The Nuclear Reddening Curve for Active Galactic Nuclei and the Shape of the Infra-Red to X-Ray Spectral Energy Distribution
We present extinction curves derived from the broad emission lines and
continua of large samples of both radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs. The curves
are significantly flatter in the UV than are curves for the local ISM. The
reddening curves for the radio-quiet LBQS quasars are slightly steeper than
those of the radio-loud quasars in the UV, probably because of additional
reddening by dust further out in the host galaxies of the former. The UV
extinction curves for the radio-loud AGNs are very flat. This is explicable
with slight modifications to standard MRN dust models: there is a relative lack
of small grains in the nuclear dust. Our continuum and broad-emission line
reddening curves agree in both shape and amplitude, confirming that the
continuum shape is indeed profoundly affected by reddening for all but the
bluest AGNs. With correction by our generic extinction curve, all of the
radio-loud AGNs have continuous optical-UV spectra consistent with a single
shape. We show that radio-quiet AGNs have very similar intrinsic UV to optical
shape over orders of magnitude in luminosity. We also argue that radio-loud and
radio-quiet AGNs probably share the same underlying continuum shape and that
most of the systematic differences between their observed continuum shapes are
due to higher nuclear reddening in radio-selected AGNs, and additional
reddening from dust further out in the host galaxies in radio-quiet AGNs. Our
conclusions have important implications for the modelling of quasar continua

Costs and Benefits of Stem Cell Research and Treatment: Media Presentation and Audience Understanding in Hungary
This study examined the press coverage and audience understanding of the costs and benefits of stem cell research/treatment in Hungary. A content analysis of five newspapers and a focus group study was conducted. The way participants talked about the costs and benefits in many aspects echoed the dominant framing of the issue in the press (medical benefits = main benefit, high expense of treatment = dominant negative aspect). Even though participants applied analogical reasoning to formulate some risks that were missing from the reporting on stem cells, many gaps of the media coverage were echoed in gaps in lay discussions
Sleep-Dependent Memory Consolidation and Incremental Sentence Comprehension : Computational Dependencies during Language Learning as Revealed by Neuronal Oscillations
We hypothesize a beneficial influence of sleep on the consolidation of the combinatorial mechanisms underlying incremental sentence comprehension. These predictions are grounded in recent work examining the effect of sleep on the consolidation of linguistic information, which demonstrate that sleep-dependent neurophysiological activity consolidates the meaning of novel words and simple grammatical rules. However, the sleep-dependent consolidation of sentence-level combinatorics has not been studied to date. Here, we propose that dissociable aspects of sleep neurophysiology consolidate two different types of combinatory mechanisms in human language: sequence-based (order-sensitive) and dependency-based (order-insensitive) combinatorics. The distinction between the two types of combinatorics is motivated both by cross-linguistic considerations and the neurobiological underpinnings of human language. Unifying this perspective with principles of sleep-dependent memory consolidation, we posit that a function of sleep is to optimize the consolidation of sequence-based knowledge (thewhen) and the establishment of semantic schemas of unordered items (thewhat) that underpin cross-linguistic variations in sentence comprehension. This hypothesis builds on the proposal that sleep is involved in the construction of predictive codes, a unified principle of brain function that supports incremental sentence comprehension. Finally, we discuss neurophysiological measures (EEG/MEG) that could be used to test these claims, such as the quantification of neuronal oscillations, which reflect basic mechanisms of information processing in the brain
Supermassive Binaries and Extragalactic Jets
Some quasars show Doppler shifted broad emission line peaks. I give new
statistics of the occurrence of these peaks and show that, while the most
spectacular cases are in quasars with strong radio jets inclined to the line of
sight, they are also almost as common in radio-quiet quasars. Theories of the
origin of the peaks are reviewed and it is argued that the displaced peaks are
most likely produced by the supermassive binary model. The separations of the
peaks in the 3C 390.3-type objects are consistent with orientation-dependent
"unified models" of quasar activity. If the supermassive binary model is
correct, all members of "the jet set" (astrophysical objects showing jets)
