    Correlating correlation functions of primordial perturbations

    We explore the correlations between correlation functions of the primordial curvature perturbation produced during inflation. We find that for general single field inflation, other than the source terms which depend on the model details, higher order correlation functions are characterized by the power spectrum, its spectral index and running.     Systematics of multi-field effects at the end of warped brane inflation

    We investigate in the context of brane inflation the possibility of additional light scalar fields generating significant power spectrum and non-Gaussianities at the end of inflation affecting the CMB scale observations. We consider the specific mechanism outlined by Lyth and describe the necessary criteria for it to be potentially important in a warped throat. We also discuss different mechanisms for uplifting the vacuum energy which can lead to different dominant contributions of the inflaton potential near the end of inflation. We then apply such criteria to one of the most detailed brane inflation models to date, and show that inflation can persist towards the tip of the throat, however for the specific stable inflationary trajectory, the light residual isometry direction becomes degenerate. We also estimate the effects for other inflationary trajectories with non-degenerate residual isometries

    IntroductionAcid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) is expressed in synoviocytes, activated by decreases in pH, and reduces inflammation in animal models of inflammatory arthritis. The purpose of the current study was to characterize potential mechanisms underlying the control of inflammation by ASIC3 in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS).MethodsExperiments were performed in cultured FLS from wild-type (WT) and ASIC3-/- mice, ASIC1-/- mice, and people with rheumatoid arthritis. We assessed the effects of acidic pH with and without interleukin-1β on FLS and the role of ASICs in modulating intracellular calcium [Ca(2+)](i), mitogen activated kinase (MAP kinase) expression, and cell death. [Ca(2+)](i) was assessed by fluorescent calcium imaging, MAP kinases were measured by Western Blots; ASIC, cytokine and protease mRNA expression were measured by quantitative PCR and cell death was measured with a LIVE/DEAD assay.ResultsAcidic pH increased [Ca(2+)](i) and decreased p-ERK expression in WT FLS; these effects were significantly smaller in ASIC3-/- FLS and were prevented by blockade of [Ca(2+)]i. Blockade of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) prevented the pH-induced decreases in p-ERK. In WT FLS, IL-1β increases ASIC3 mRNA, and when combined with acidic pH enhances [Ca(2+)](i), p-ERK, IL-6 and metalloprotienase mRNA, and cell death. Inhibitors of [Ca(2+)](i) and ERK prevented cell death induced by pH 6.0 in combination with IL-1β in WT FLS.ConclusionsDecreased pH activates ASIC3 resulting in increased [Ca(2+)](i), and decreased p-ERK. Under inflammatory conditions, acidic pH results in enhanced [Ca(2+)](i) and phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase that leads to cell death. Thus, activation of ASIC3 on FLS by acidic pH from an inflamed joint could limit synovial proliferation resulting in reduced accumulation of inflammatory mediators and subsequent joint damage

    Coupled fiber taper extraction of 1.53 um photoluminescence from erbium doped silicon nitride photonic crystal cavities

    Optical fiber tapers are used to collect photoluminescence emission at ~1.5 um from photonic crystal cavities fabricated in erbium doped silicon nitride on silicon. Photoluminescence collection via fiber taper is enhanced 2.5 times relative to free space, with a total taper collection efficiency of 53%. By varying the fiber taper offset from the cavity, a broad tuning range of coupling strength is obtained. This material system combined with fiber taper collection is promising for building on-chip optical amplifiers.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    The value of IGF-1 and IGFBP-1 in patients with heart failure with reduced, mid-range, and preserved ejection fraction

    Background: Previous studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the implications of deranged insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)/insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP-1) axis in patients with heart failure (HF). This study evaluates the roles of IGF1/IGFBP-1 axis in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF), or preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Methods: Consecutive patients with HFrEF, HFmrEF, and HFpEF who underwent comprehensive cardiac assessment were included. The primary endpoint was the composite endpoint of all-cause death and HF rehospitalization at one year. Results: A total of 151 patients with HF (HFrEF: n = 51; HFmrEF: n = 30; HFpEF: n = 70) and 50 control subjects were included. The concentrations of IGFBP-1 (p < 0.001) and IGFBP-1/IGF-1 ratio (p < 0.001) were significantly lower in patients with HF compared to controls and can readily distinguish patients with and without HF (IGFBP-1: areas under the curve (AUC): 0.725, p < 0.001; IGFBP-1/IGF-1 ratio: AUC:0.755, p < 0.001; respectively). The concentrations of IGF-1, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-1/IGF-1 ratio were similar among HFpEF, HFmrEF, and HFrEF patients. IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-1/IGF-1 ratio positively correlated with N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels (r = 0.255, p = 0.002; r = 0.224, p = 0.007, respectively). IGF-1, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-1/IGF-1 ratio did not predict the primary endpoint at 1 year for the whole patients with HF and HF subtypes on both univariable and multivariable Cox regression. Conclusion: The concentrations of plasma IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-1/IGF-1 ratio can distinguish patients with and without HF. In HF, IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-1/IGF-1 ratio positively correlated with NT-proBNP levels

    Nanobeam photonic crystal cavity quantum dot laser

    The lasing behavior of one dimensional GaAs nanobeam cavities with embedded InAs quantum dots is studied at room temperature. Lasing is observed throughout the quantum dot PL spectrum, and the wavelength dependence of the threshold is calculated. We study the cavity lasers under both 780 nm and 980 nm pump, finding thresholds as low as 0.3 uW and 19 uW for the two pump wavelengths, respectively. Finally, the nanobeam cavity laser wavelengths are tuned by up to 7 nm by employing a fiber taper in near proximity to the cavities. The fiber taper is used both to efficiently pump the cavity and collect the cavity emission.Comment: 8 pages; 6 figure

    SwinCross: Cross-modal Swin Transformer for Head-and-Neck Tumor Segmentation in PET/CT Images

    Radiotherapy (RT) combined with cetuximab is the standard treatment for patients with inoperable head and neck cancers. Segmentation of head and neck (H&N) tumors is a prerequisite for radiotherapy planning but a time-consuming process. In recent years, deep convolutional neural networks have become the de facto standard for automated image segmentation. However, due to the expensive computational cost associated with enlarging the field of view in DCNNs, their ability to model long-range dependency is still limited, and this can result in sub-optimal segmentation performance for objects with background context spanning over long distances. On the other hand, Transformer models have demonstrated excellent capabilities in capturing such long-range information in several semantic segmentation tasks performed on medical images. Inspired by the recent success of Vision Transformers and advances in multi-modal image analysis, we propose a novel segmentation model, debuted, Cross-Modal Swin Transformer (SwinCross), with cross-modal attention (CMA) module to incorporate cross-modal feature extraction at multiple resolutions.To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed experiments on the HECKTOR 2021 challenge dataset and compared it with the nnU-Net (the backbone of the top-5 methods in HECKTOR 2021) and other state-of-the-art transformer-based methods such as UNETR, and Swin UNETR. The proposed method is experimentally shown to outperform these comparing methods thanks to the ability of the CMA module to capture better inter-modality complimentary feature representations between PET and CT, for the task of head-and-neck tumor segmentation.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures.
